Job 28
1 For truly there is a source for the silver, and a place for the gold which men refine.
« Il y a certainement une mine d'argent, et un endroit pour l'or qu'ils raffinent.
2 Iron is taken out of the dust, and the stone is melted into copper.
Le fer est extrait de la terre, et le cuivre est fondu à partir du minerai.
3 An end doth he set to darkness, and the very utmost limit doth he search out, the stones of darkness, and of the shadow of death.
L'homme met fin à l'obscurité, et cherche jusqu'à la frontière la plus lointaine, les pierres de l'obscurité et des ténèbres épaisses.
4 He breaketh a channel far from the inhabited place; those of unsteady foot, the poorest of men move [there about].
Il ouvre un puits loin de l'endroit où vivent les gens. Ils sont oubliés par le pied. Ils sont suspendus loin des hommes, ils se balancent d'avant en arrière.
5 The earth, out of which cometh forth bread, is under its surface turned up as it were with fire.
Quant à la terre, c'est d'elle que vient le pain. En dessous, il est comme retourné par le feu.
6 Her stones are the place whence the sapphire cometh; and golden dust is also there;
Saphirs proviennent de ses roches. Il a de la poussière d'or.
7 [On the] path which no bird of prey knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not surveyed;
Ce chemin, aucun oiseau de proie ne le connaît, L'œil du faucon ne l'a pas vu non plus.
8 [Which] ravenous beasts have never trodden, over which the lion hath never passed.
Les bêtes fières ne l'ont pas foulée, et le lion féroce n'est pas passé par là.
9 To the flinty rock he stretcheth forth his hand; he overturneth the mountains from the root.
Il pose sa main sur le rocher de silex, et il renverse les montagnes par les racines.
10 Amid rocks he heweth out canals: and every precious thing doth his eye behold.
Il creuse des canaux parmi les rochers. Son œil voit chaque chose précieuse.
11 The various droppings of water he uniteth into streams, and what is hidden he bringeth forth to light.
Il lie les ruisseaux pour qu'ils ne coulent pas. La chose qui est cachée, il la met en lumière.
12 But wisdom—where shall she he found? and where is the place of understanding?
« Mais où trouvera-t-on la sagesse? Où se trouve le lieu de la compréhension?
13 Man knoweth not her value: and she is not to be found in the land of the living.
L'homme ne connaît pas son prix, et on ne le trouve pas sur la terre des vivants.
14 The deep saith, Not in me is she: and the sea saith, She is not with me.
L'abîme dit: « Ce n'est pas en moi ». La mer dit: « Elle n'est pas avec moi ».
15 No fine gold can be given in lieu of her, and silver cannot be weighed out as her price.
On ne peut pas l'obtenir pour de l'or, l'argent ne sera pas non plus pesé pour son prix.
16 She cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
Il ne peut être évalué avec l'or d'Ophir, avec le précieux onyx, ou le saphir.
17 She cannot be estimated after gold and glass; and not in exchange for her [can] vessels of refined gold [be taken.]
L'or et le verre ne peuvent pas l'égaler, Elle ne sera pas non plus échangée contre des bijoux en or fin.
18 Coral and crystal will not be thought of; and the value of wisdom is above pearls.
Il ne sera fait mention ni du corail ni du cristal. Oui, le prix de la sagesse est supérieur à celui des rubis.
19 She cannot be estimated after the topaz of Ethiopia, nor can she be valued with pure gold.
La topaze d'Éthiopie ne l'égalera pas. Il ne sera pas évalué avec de l'or pur.
20 But wisdom—whence cometh she? and where is the place of understanding?
D'où vient donc la sagesse? Où se trouve le lieu de la compréhension?
21 Yea, she is hidden from the eyes of all living, and from the fowls of the heavens is she concealed.
Elle est cachée aux yeux de tous les vivants, et gardé à l'écart des oiseaux du ciel.
22 Perdition and death say, With our ears have we heard a report of her.
Destruction et Mort disent, « Nous en avons entendu la rumeur de nos oreilles.
23 God [alone] understandeth her way, and he knoweth her place;
« Dieu comprend son chemin, et il connaît sa place.
24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, [whatever is] under the whole heaven doth he see.
Car il regarde jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, et voit sous tout le ciel.
25 When he imparted weight unto the wind; and [when] the waters he established by measure;
Il établit la force du vent. Oui, il mesure les eaux par mesure.
26 When he made a law for the rain, and a way for the lightning of [his] thunders;
Quand il a fait un décret pour la pluie, et un chemin pour l'éclair du tonnerre,
27 Then did he see her, and make her known; he established her, and also searched her out.
alors il l'a vu, et l'a déclaré. Il l'a établi, oui, et l'a recherché.
28 And he said unto man, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to eschew evil is understanding.
Il dit à l'homme, Voici la crainte de l'Éternel, qui est la sagesse. S'éloigner du mal, c'est comprendre. »
