Job 21
1 Then answered Job, and said,
Mais Job répondit, et dit:
2 Hear, O hear my speech, and let this be wherewith you give consolations.
Ecoutez attentivement mon discours, et cela me tiendra lieu de consolations de votre part.
3 Bear with me that I may indeed speak: and after my speaking, then canst thou mock.
Supportez-moi, et je parlerai, et après que j'aurai parlé, moquez-vous.
4 As for me, —is against man my complaint? and if this be so, why should my spirit not be impatient?
Pour moi, mon discours s'adresse-t-il à un homme? si cela était, comment mon esprit ne défaudrait-il pas?
5 Turn yourselves unto me, and be astounded, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
Regardez-moi, et soyez étonnés, et mettez la main sur la bouche.
6 Yea, when I think of it, I am terrified, and shuddering seizeth hold of my flesh.
Quand je pense à [mon état], j'en suis tout étonné, et un tremblement saisit ma chair.
7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, grow strong in power?
Pourquoi les méchants vivent-ils, [et] vieillissent, et même pourquoi sont-ils les plus puissants?
8 Their seed is firmly established in their presence with them. their offspring are before their eyes.
Leur race se maintient en leur présence avec eux, et leurs rejetons s'élèvent devant leurs yeux.
9 Their houses are at peace without any dread, and no rod of God [cometh] over them.
Leurs maisons jouissent de la paix loin de la frayeur; la verge de Dieu n'est point sur eux.
10 The bull of each one gendereth, and disappointeth not: the cow of each one calveth, and casteth not her young.
Leur vache conçoit, et n'y manque point; leur jeune vache se décharge de son veau, et n'avorte point.
11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children skip about [with joy].
Ils font sortir devant eux leurs petits, comme un troupeau de brebis, et leurs enfants sautent.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.
Ils sautent au son du tambour et du violon, et se réjouissent au son des orgues.
13 They wear out their days in happiness, and in a moment they go down to the nether world. (Sheol h7585)
Ils passent leurs jours dans les plaisirs, et en un moment ils descendent au sépulcre. (Sheol h7585)
14 And yet they say unto God, “Depart from us; and the knowledge of thy ways we desire not.
Cependant ils ont dit au [Dieu] Fort: Retire-toi de nous; car nous ne nous soucions point de la science de tes voies.
15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit shall we have, if we entreat him urgently?”
Qui est le Tout-puissant que nous le servions? et quel bien nous reviendra-t-il de l'avoir invoqué?
16 Lo, not in their hand doth their happiness rest! The counsel of the wicked be [still] far from me.
Voilà, leur bien n'est pas en leur puissance. Que le conseil des méchants soit loin de moi!
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked quenched? and how often cometh over them their calamity? and doth [God] distribute their lot in his anger?
Aussi combien de fois arrive-t-il que la lampe des méchants est éteinte, et que l'orage vient sur eux! [Dieu] leur distribuera leurs portions en sa colère.
18 Are they as straw before the wind, and as chaff which the stealeth away?
Ils seront comme la paille exposée au vent, et comme la balle qui est enlevée par le tourbillon.
19 Should God lay up for his children his wrong-doing? it were better that he reward him, that he might know it himself.
Dieu réservera aux enfants du méchant la punition de ses violences, il la leur rendra, et il le saura.
20 His own eyes ought to see his downfall, and from the wrath of the Almighty ought he to drink.
Ses yeux verront sa ruine, et il boira [le calice de] la colère du Tout-puissant.
21 For what care hath he for his household after him, when the number of his months is all apportioned to him?
Et quel plaisir aura-t-il en sa maison, laquelle il laisse après soi, puisque le nombre de ses mois aura été retranché?
22 Is this fitting God, who teacheth knowledge? him who judgeth those that are highest?
Enseignerait-on la science au [Dieu] Fort, à lui qui juge ceux qui sont élevés?
23 That this one dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet;
L'un meurt dans toute sa vigueur, tranquille et en repos;
24 His vessels being full of healthy fluid, and the marrow of his bones being well moistened:
Ses vaisseaux sont remplis de lait, et ses os sont abreuvés de moëlle.
25 While this other dieth with an embittered soul, and hath never partaken of any happiness;
Et l'autre meurt dans l'amertume de son âme, et n'ayant jamais fait bonne chère.
26 [And yet] together they must lie down in the dust, and the worms will cover them?
Et néanmoins ils sont couchés également dans la poudre, et les vers les couvrent.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the opinions which ye wrongfully devise against me.
Voilà, je connais vos pensées, et les jugements que vous formez contre moi.
28 For ye say, Where is the house of the noble-minded? and where is the tent of the dwelling-places of the wicked?
Car vous dites: Où est la maison de cet homme si puissant, et où est la tente dans laquelle les méchants demeuraient?
29 Have ye not asked the wayfarers? surely their token ye cannot disregard,
Ne vous êtes-vous jamais informés des voyageurs, et n'avez-vous pas appris par les rapports qu'ils vous ont faits,
30 That the bad man is reserved for the day of calamity, [that the wicked] are carried forward to the day of wrath.
Que le méchant est réservé pour le jour de la ruine, pour le jour que les fureurs sont envoyées?
31 [But] who will tell him to his face of his way? and who will repay him what he hath done?
[Mais] qui le reprendra en face de sa conduite? et qui lui rendra le mal qu'il a fait?
32 Yea he will indeed be carried to the grave, and men will quickly think of his monument:
Il sera néanmoins porté au sépulcre, et il demeurera dans le tombeau.
33 Sweet are to him the clods of the valley; and after him succeedeth every man, as those that were before him are without number.
Les mottes des vallées lui sont agréables; et tout le monde s'en va à la file après lui, et des gens sans nombre marchent au-devant de lui.
34 How then will ye comfort me with vanity? and of your answers there remaineth only deception.
Comment donc me donnez-vous des consolations vaines, puisqu'il y a toujours de la prévarication dans vos réponses?
