Job 14
1 Man born of a woman is short of days, and sated with harrowing trouble.
L’homme né d’une femme, vivant peu de temps, est rempli de beaucoup de misères.
2 Like a flower he cometh forth, and is cut down: and he fleeth like a shadow, and remaineth not.
Comme une fleur, il s’élève, et il est brisé, et il fuit comme l’ombre, et jamais il ne demeure dans un même état.
3 And yet on such a one dost thou open thy eyes, and me thou bringest into judgment with thee?
Et vous croyez, ô Dieu, qu’il soit digne de vous, d’ouvrir les yeux sur un tel être, et de l’appeler avec vous en jugement?
4 Who can make a clean thing out of an unclean? not one [thing].
Qui peut rendre pur celui qui a été conçu d’un sang impur? N’est-ce pas vous qui seul êtes pur?
5 Seeing that his days are determined, the number of his months are [fixed] with thee, that thou hast set his bounds which he cannot pass:
Les jours de l’homme sont courts; le nombre de ses mois est en vos mains; vous avez marqué son terme, lequel ne pourra être dépassé.
6 Turn thyself from him that he may recover from his pain, and be able to enjoy like a hired laborer his day.
Retirez-vous un peu de lui, afin qu’il se repose, jusqu’à ce que vienne, comme un mercenaire, son jour désiré.
7 For there is hope for the tree: if it be cut down, it may still sprout again, while its young shoot will not cease.
Un arbre a de l’espoir: si on le coupe, il reverdit, et ses rameaux poussent.
8 If even its root become old in the earth, and its stock die in the dust:
Quand sa racine aurait vieilli dans la terre, quand son tronc serait mort dans la poussière,
9 Yet through the scent of water will it flourish [again], and produce boughs as though It were newly planted.
À l’odeur de l’eau, il germera, et portera des feuilles comme auparavant, lorsqu’il fut planté.
10 But man dieth, and lieth powerless: yea, the son of earth departeth—and where is he?
Mais un homme, lorsqu’il est mort et dépouillé et consumé, où est-il, je vous prie?
11 The waters run off from the sea, and the river faileth and drieth up:
De même que si des eaux se retirent de la mer, elles n’y reviennent plus, et que si un fleuve tari se dessèche, il ne coule pas de nouveau,
12 So doth man lie down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they will not awake, and will not be roused out of their sleep.
Ainsi, un homme, lorsqu’il s’est endormi, ne ressuscitera point jusqu’à ce que le ciel soit détruit; il ne s’éveillera point, et il ne se lèvera pas de son sommeil.
13 Oh who would grant that thou mightest hide me in the nether world, that thou mightest conceal me, until thy wrath be appeased, that thou mightest set for me a fixed time, and remember me then! (Sheol h7585)
Qui me donnera que vous me protégiez dans l’enfer, et que vous me cachiez jusqu’à ce que votre fureur soit passée, et que vous me marquiez un temps où vous vous souviendrez de moi? (Sheol h7585)
14 Or, when a man dieth, will he live again? all the days of my time of service would I then wait, till [the hour of] my release were come.
Penses-tu qu’une fois mort un homme revive? Pendant tous les jours, où maintenant je combats, j’attends que mon changement vienne.
15 Do thou call, and I will truly answer thee: have a desire for the work of thy hands.
Vous m’appellerez, et moi je vous répondrai; vous tendrez votre droite à l’ouvrage de vos mains.
16 Yet now thou numberest my steps: and thou waitest not with [the punishment of] my sin.
Vous avez, à la vérité, compté mes pas; mais pardonnez mes péchés.
17 Sealed up in a bag is my transgression, and thou yet addest to my iniquity.
Vous avez scellé comme dans un sac mes offenses; mais vous avez guéri mon iniquité.
18 But truly a falling mountain will crumble, and [even] a rock is moved out of its place.
Une montagne qui tombe disparaît, et un rocher est transporté de sa place.
19 The water weareth out stones; thou sweepest away their fragments [like] the dust of the earth: and so thou destroyest the hope of man.
Les eaux cavent des pierres, et une terre est à peu près consumée par une inondation: c’est donc ainsi que vous perdrez un homme.
20 Thou assailest him with might without ceasing, till he passeth away: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him off.
Vous l’avez affermi pour un peu de temps, afin qu’il disparût pour toujours; vous changerez sa face, et vous l’enverrez au loin.
21 His children acquire honor, but he knoweth it not: and they are esteemed little, but he perceiveth nothing of them.
Que ses enfants soient dans la gloire, ou qu’ils soient dans l’ignominie, il ne le saura pas.
22 But his body. on him, feeleth pain, and his soul will mourn for him.
Toutefois sa chair, tandis qu’il vivra, souffrira, et son âme pleurera sur lui.
