Jeremiah 7
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
La parole fut [adressée] à Jérémie par l'Eternel, en disant:
2 Place thyself in the gate of the house of the Lord, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in by these gates to bow down before the Lord.
Tiens-toi debout à la porte de la maison de l'Eternel, et y crie cette parole, et dis: vous tous hommes de Juda qui entrez par ces portes, pour vous prosterner devant l'Eternel, écoutez la parole de l'Eternel;
3 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will permit you to dwell in this place.
Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: corrigez votre vie et vos actions, et je vous ferai habiter en ce lieu-ci.
4 [But] do not rely on the words of falsehood, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, [as] they [say].
Ne vous fiez point sur des paroles trompeuses, en disant: c'est ici le Temple de l'Eternel, le Temple de l'Eternel, le Temple de l'Eternel.
5 For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your deeds; if ye thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor;
Mais corrigez sérieusement votre conduite et vos actions, et appliquez-vous à faire droit à ceux qui plaident l'un contre l'autre.
6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, and walk not after other gods to your own hurt:
Et ne faites point de tort à l'étranger, ni à l'orphelin, ni à la veuve; et ne répandez point en ce lieu-ci le sang innocent, et ne marchez point après les dieux étrangers, à votre ruine.
7 Then will I permit you to dwell in this place, in the land that I have given to your fathers, from eternity to eternity.
Et je vous ferai habiter depuis un siècle jusqu’à l'autre siècle en ce lieu-ci, au pays que j'ai donné à vos pères.
8 Behold, ye rely on the words of falsehood, that cannot profit.
Voici, vous vous fiez sur des paroles trompeuses, sans aucun profit.
9 How? will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Ba'al, and walk after other gods of which ye have no knowledge;
Ne dérobez-vous pas? ne tuez-vous pas? ne commettez-vous pas adultère? ne jurez-vous pas faussement? ne faites-vous pas des encensements à Bahal? n'allez-vous pas après les dieux étrangers, que vous ne connaissez point?
10 And [then] come and stand before my presence in this house, which is called by my name, and say, “We are delivered;” in order to do all these abominations?
Toutefois vous venez, et vous vous présentez devant moi dans cette maison, sur laquelle mon Nom est réclamé, et vous dites: nous avons été délivrés pour faire toutes ces abominations.
11 Is then this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? [But] I also, behold, I have seen it, saith the Lord.
Cette maison, sur laquelle mon Nom est réclamé devant vos yeux, n'est-elle pas devenue une caverne de brigands? et voici, moi-même je l'ai vu, dit l'Eternel.
12 For go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I caused my name to dwell at the first, and see what I did unto it because of the wickedness of my people Israel.
Mais allez maintenant à mon lieu, qui était à Silo, là où j'avais placé mon Nom dès le commencement, et regardez ce que je lui ai fait, à cause de la malice de mon peuple d'Israël.
13 And now, whereas ye have done all these acts, saith the Lord, and I spoke unto you, causing [the prophets] to rise up early and speaking, while ye would not hear; and I called you, but ye would not answer:
Maintenant donc, parce que vous faites toutes ces choses, dit l'Eternel, et que je vous ai parlé, me levant dès le matin, et parlant, et que vous n'avez point écouté; je vous ai appelés, et vous n'avez point répondu:
14 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, whereon ye rely, and unto the place which I have given to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
Je ferai à cette maison, sur laquelle mon Nom est réclamé, et sur laquelle vous vous fiez, et à ce lieu que je vous ai donné à vous et à vos pères, comme j'ai fait à Silo.
15 And I will cast you out of my presence, as I have cast out all your brethren, all the seed of Ephraim.
Et je vous chasserai de devant ma face, comme j'ai chassé tous vos frères, avec toute la postérité d'Ephraïm.
16 But thou—pray not thou in behalf of this people, nor lift up in their behalf entreaty or prayer, nor make intercession to me; for I will not hear thee.
Toi donc ne prie point pour ce peuple, et ne jette point de cri, et ne fais point de requête pour eux, et n'intercède point envers moi; car je ne t'exaucerai point.
17 Dost thou not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
Ne vois-tu pas ce qu'ils font dans les villes de Juda, et dans les rues de Jérusalem?
18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven, and they pour out drink-offerings unto other gods, in order to provoke me to anger.
Les fils amassent le bois, et les pères allument le feu, et les femmes pétrissent la pâte pour faire des gâteaux à la Reine des cieux; et pour faire des aspersions aux dieux étrangers, afin de m'irriter.
19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith the Lord, [and] not themselves, to the shame of their own faces?
Ce qu'ils m'irritent est-il contre moi? dit l'Eternel. N'est-ce pas contre eux-mêmes, à la confusion de leurs faces?
20 Therefore thus hath said the Lord Eternal, Behold my anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, over man, and over beast, and over the trees of the field, and over the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and it shall not be quenched.
C'est pourquoi ainsi a dit le Seigneur l'Eternel: voici, ma colère et ma fureur vont fondre sur ce lieu-ci, sur les hommes et sur les bêtes, sur les arbres des champs, et sur le fruit de la terre, ma colère s'embrasera, et ne s'éteindra point.
21 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Add your burnt-offerings unto your peace-sacrifices, and eat the flesh thereof.
Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: ajoutez vos holocaustes à vos sacrifices, et mangez-en la chair.
22 For I spoke not with your fathers, and I commanded them not on the day of my bringing them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt-offering or sacrifice;
Car je n'ai point parlé avec vos pères, et je ne leur ai point donné de commandement touchant les holocaustes et les sacrifices, au jour que je les fis sortir du pays d'Egypte.
23 But this thing did I command them, saying, Hearken to my voice, and I will be unto you for a God, and ye shall be unto me for a people; and walk ye altogether on the way which I may command you, in order that it may be well unto you.
Mais voici ce que je leur ai commandé, disant: écoutez ma voix, et je serai votre Dieu, et vous serez mon peuple; et marchez dans toutes les voies que je vous ai ordonnées, afin que vous soyez heureux.
24 Yet they hearkened not, and inclined not their ear; but they walked in the counsels, in the stubbornness of their evil heart; and they went backward, and not forward:
Mais ils n'ont point écouté, et n'ont point incliné leur oreille; mais ils ont suivi [d'autres] conseils, et la dureté de leur cœur mauvais, ils se sont éloignés et ne sont point retournés jusques à moi.
25 Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt until this day; and I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, sending them daily in the morning early;
Depuis le jour que vos pères sont sortis du pays d'Egypte, jusqu’à aujourd'hui, je vous ai envoyé tous mes serviteurs Prophètes, me levant [chaque] jour dès le matin, et les envoyant.
26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, and inclined not their ear; but they hardened their neck; they did worse than their fathers.
Mais ils ne m'ont point écouté, et ils n'ont point incliné leur oreille, mais ils ont raidi leur cou; ils ont fait pis que leurs pères.
27 And if thou speak unto them all these words, and they will not hearken to thee; and if thou call unto them, and they will not answer thee:
Tu leur diras donc toutes ces paroles, mais ils ne t'écouteront point; et tu crieras après eux, mais ils ne te répondront point.
28 Then shalt thou say unto them, This is the nation that hearken not to the voice of the Lord their God, and accept not correction; lost is the truth, and is obliterated from their mouth.
C'est pourquoi tu leur diras: [c'est] ici la nation qui n'a point écouté la voix de l'Eternel son Dieu, et qui n'a point reçu d'instruction; la fidélité est périe, et elle a été retranchée de leur bouche.
29 Cut off thy flowing hair, and cast it away, and take up on mountain-tops a lamentation; for rejected hath the Lord and forsaken the generation of his wrath.
Tonds ta chevelure, [ô Jérusalem!] et [la] jette au loin, et prononce à haute voix ta complainte sur les lieux élevés; car l'Eternel a rejeté et abandonné la génération contre laquelle il est fort courroucé.
30 For the children of Judah have done what is evil in my eyes, saith the Lord: they have set up their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.
Parce que les enfants de Juda ont fait ce qui me déplaît, dit l'Eternel, ils ont mis leurs abominations dans cette maison, sur laquelle mon Nom est invoqué, afin de la souiller.
31 And they have built the high-places of Thophet, which is in the valley of Ben-hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I had not commanded, and which never came into my mind.
Et ils ont bâti les hauts lieux de Topheth, qui [est] dans la vallée du fils de Hinnom, pour brûler leurs fils et leurs filles au feu, ce que je n'ai pas commandé, et à quoi je n'ai jamais pensé.
32 Therefore, behold days are coming, saith the Lord, that it shall not be called any more Thophet, or The valley of Ben-hinnom, but The valley of slaughter: and they shall bury in Thophet, for want of room.
C'est pourquoi voici, les jours viennent, dit l'Eternel, qu'elle ne sera plus appelée Topheth, ni la vallée du fils de Hinnom, mais la vallée de la tuerie, et on ensevelira [les morts] à Topheth, à cause qu'il n'y aura plus [d'autre] lieu.
33 And the carcasses of this people shall become food unto the fowls of the heavens, and unto the beasts of the earth, with none to chase them away.
Et les corps morts de ce peuple seront pour viande aux oiseaux des cieux, et aux bêtes de la terre, sans qu'il y ait personne qui les effarouche.
34 And I will cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of gladness, and the voice of joy, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride; for a desert shall the land become.
Je ferai aussi cesser des villes de Juda, et des rues de Jérusalem, la voix de joie, et la voix d'allégresse, la voix de l'époux, et la voix de l'épouse, car le pays sera mis en désolation.
