Jeremiah 6
1 Assemble, O ye children of Benjamin, to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and in Tekoa, blow the cornet, and on Beth-hakkerem set up a fire signal; for evil is seen [coming] out of the north, and great havoc.
Armez-vous de force, fils de Benjamin, pour fuir du milieu de Jérusalem; sonnez de la trompette à Thécué, et levez l'étendard de Béthacharam, parce que, du côté de l'aquilon, des maux nous menacent, et qu'une grande affliction arrive sur nous;
2 The comely and the delicate, the daughter of Zion do I destroy.
Et ton orgueil sera abaissé, fille de Sion.
3 Unto her shall come shepherds with their flocks; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed off every one his own place.
Coutre elle marcheront les pasteurs avec leurs troupeaux, et ils dresseront leurs tentes autour d'elle, et chacun y viendra paître sa part de bétail.
4 Prepare ye war against her! “Arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe unto us! for the day waneth, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.
Préparez-vous à la combattre; levez-vous, et donnons-lui l'assaut en plein midi. Malheur à nous! parce que le jour décline, et que les ombres du jour s'évanouissent.
5 Arise, and let us go up by night, and let us destroy her palaces.”
Levez-vous, et donnons-lui l'assaut dans les ténèbres, et arrachons-lui ses fondations.
6 For thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Cut ye down trees, and cast up a mound against Jerusalem: this is the city whose time of punishment is come; she is full of oppression in her midst.
Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Abats ses arbres, répands tes forces autour de Jérusalem. O ville menteuse, il y a en elle toute sorte d'oppression.
7 As a well sendeth forth its waters, so doth she cause her wickedness to spring forth: violence and robbery are heard in her; in my presence there are continually disease and wounds.
Comme une citerne refroidit l'eau, ainsi sa méchanceté glace de froid; sans cesse on entend parler devant elle d'impiétés et d'afflictions.
8 Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, that my soul tear itself not away from thee; that I render thee not desolate, a land which is not inhabited.
Jérusalem, tu seras instruite par le fouet et la douleur; mon âme ne se séparera point de toi que je n'aie fait de toi une terre impraticable, qui ne sera plus habitée.
9 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, They shall thoroughly glean like a vine the remnant of Israel: carry back thy hand as a grape-gatherer frequently to the baskets.
Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Grappillez, grappillez comme une vigne les restes d'Israël; allez et revenez, comme le vendangeur pour remplir son panier.
10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot be attentive: behold, the word of the Lord is become unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.
A qui vais-je parler et attester, et qui m'écoutera? Voilà que leurs oreilles sont incirconcises, et ils ne pourront entendre. Voilà que la parole du Seigneur leur inspire du mépris, et ils n'en veulent point.
11 And I am full of the fury of the Lord; I am weary with sustaining it: [I must] pour it out over the child in the street, and over the assembly of young men together; for even the husband with the wife shall be seized, the aged with him that is full of days.
Et j'ai assouvi ma colère, et je l'ai contenue en moi, et je ne les ai pas entièrement détruits. Mais je la répandrai au dehors sur les enfants à la mamelle, sur la synagogue des jeunes gens; en même temps l'on prendra les hommes et les femmes, et le vieillard plein de jours.
12 And their houses shall be transferred unto others, fields and wives together; for I will stretch out my hand over the inhabitants of the land, saith the Lord.
Et leurs maisons, leurs champs, leurs femmes aussi appartiendront à d'autres, parce que j'étendrai la main sur les habitants de cette terre, dit le Seigneur.
13 For from their least even unto their greatest, every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one practiseth falsehood.
Car, du petit au grand, ils ont commis des iniquités; depuis le prêtre jusqu'au faux prophète, ils ont fait des œuvres de mensonge.
14 And they heal the breach of the daughter of my people very lightly, saying, Peace, peace: when there is no peace.
Ils pansaient les plaies de mon peuple, mais avec dédain, en lui disant: La paix, la paix! Et où est-elle la paix?
15 They should have been ashamed, because they had committed an abomination; but they neither felt the least shame, nor did they know how to blush: therefore shall they fall among those that fall; at the time that I punish their sin shall they stumble, saith the Lord.
Aussi ont-ils été confondus parce qu'ils ont failli. Et encore ils n'ont pas été confondus comme ceux qui le sont réellement; car leur confusion même ne les a pas confondus. Et à cause de cela ils tomberont, et ce sera leur ruine; et au temps de ma visite ils périront, dit le Seigneur.
16 Thus hath said the Lord, Place yourselves on the ways, and see, and ask after the ancient paths, where is the way which is good, that ye may walk thereon, and find rest for your soul. But they said, We will not walk [thereon].
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Tenez-vous dans les voies, et regardez, et informez-vous des éternels sentiers du Seigneur. Voyez quelle est la bonne voie et marchez-y, et vous trouverez la purification de vos âmes. Et ils ont dit: Nous n'irons pas.
17 Then did I set watchmen over you, [saying, ] Listen to the sound of the cornet. But they said, We will not listen.
J'ai établi sur vous des sentinelles, disant: Écoutez la voix de la trompette. Et ils ont dit: Nous n'écouterons pas.
18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O assembly, what [guilt] is among them.
A cause de cela, ils ont entendu les nations, et ceux qui paissaient leurs troupeaux.
19 Hear, O earth! behold, I will bring evil upon this people, the fruit of their thoughts; because unto my words have they not been attentive, and as regardeth my law, —that have they despised.
Terre, écoute: Voilà que je vais amener sur ce peuple des malheurs, fruit de leur rébellion; car ils n'ont point eu souci de mes paroles, et ils ont répudié ma loi.
20 To what purpose serveth me the frankincense which cometh from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far-off country? your burnt-offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices are not agreeable unto me.
A quoi bon m'offrir de l'encens de Saba et du cinnamome d'une contrée lointaine, vos holocaustes ne me sont point agréables, et vos victimes ne me causent point de joie.
21 Therefore thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I will place before this people stumbling-blocks, and thereon shall stumble the fathers and the sons together, the neighbor and his friend, and they shall perish.
Et c'est pourquoi le Seigneur a dit: Voilà que je vais envoyer une maladie sur ce peuple; les pères et les fils tomberont malades ensemble, les proches périront avec leurs voisins.
22 Thus hath said the Lord, Behold, a people is coming from the north country, and a great nation shall wake up from the farthest ends of the earth.
Et le Seigneur a dit: Voilà qu'un peuple vient de l'aquilon, et les nations se lèveront des extrémités de la terre.
23 Bow and spear shall they firmly grasp; cruel are they, and will have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and upon horses do they ride; set in array as one man for the war, against thee, O daughter of Zion.
Ils tiendront l'arc et le javelot. Ce peuple est audacieux, il sera sans pitié; sa voix est comme les flots de la mer; il combattra à cheval et sur des chars et tombera sur toi comme la flamme, ô fille de Sion.
24 We have heard the fame of him—our hands grow feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, pain, as of a woman in giving birth.
Nous avons entendu ce qu'on en dit, et nos mains en sont défaillantes; l'angoisse nous a saisis avec des douleurs comme celles de l'enfantement.
25 Go not forth into the field, on the road must ye not walk; for [there is] the sword of the enemy, terror on every side.
Ne sortez pas dans les champs, n'allez pas sur les chemins; car le glaive des ennemis est là tout alentour.
26 O daughter of my people, gird thyself with sackcloth, and roll thyself in the ashes: a mourning as for an only son prepare unto thee, a most bitter lamentation; for suddenly will the destroyer come over us.
Fille de mon peuple, ceins-toi d'un cilice; couvre-toi de cendre; frappe amèrement ta poitrine, comme lorsqu'on pleure un bien-aimé; car soudain le malheur tombera sur vous.
27 I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people, that thou mayest know and probe their way.
Je t'ai établi pour mettre à l'épreuve ces peuples tant de fois éprouvés, et tu me connaîtras à ma manière d'éprouver moi-même leurs voies.
28 They all are grievous revolters, going about as talebearers, copper and iron: they all are corrupt.
Ils sont tous indociles, ils ne marchent point droit; c'est de l'airain et du fer, ils sont tous corrompus.
29 The bellows are burnt, by the fire the lead is consumed: in vain the melter refineth; for the wicked are not separated away.
Le soufflet manque à la forge, le plomb y manque, le batteur d'argent frappe à vide; seule leur malice n'est point épuisée.
30 Refuse silver men call them; because the Lord hath rejected them.
Appelez-les de l'argent réprouvé; car ils sont réprouvés par le Seigneur.
