Jeremiah 42
1 Then came near all the captains of the armies, and Jochanan the son of Kareach, and Yezanyah the son of Hosha'yah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest,
Et s’approchèrent tous les princes des hommes de guerre, Johanan, fils de Carée, et Jézonias, fils d’Osaïas, et tout le reste du peuple, depuis le petit jusqu’au grand;
2 And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our humble supplication be accepted before thee, and pray in our behalf unto the Lord thy God, in behalf of all this remnant; [for we are left but a few of many, as thy own eyes do see us: ]
Et ils dirent à Jérémie, le prophète: Que notre prière tombe en ta présence; et prie pour nous le Seigneur ton Dieu pour tous ces restes, parce que nous avons été laissés un petit nombre d’un bien plus grand, comme les yeux nous voient;
3 That the Lord thy God may tell us the way whereon we should walk, and the thing that we should do.
Et que le Seigneur ton Dieu nous annonce la voie par laquelle nous devons marcher, et la parole que nous devons accomplir.
4 Then said Jeremiah the prophet unto them, I have heard you: behold, I will pray unto the Lord your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing the Lord will answer you, I will tell unto you; I will withhold not a word from you.
Or Jérémie, le prophète, leur dit: J’ai entendu; voici que moi je prie le Seigneur votre Dieu, selon vos paroles; toute parole quelconque qu’il me répondra, je vous la ferai connaître, et je ne vous cacherai rien.
5 But they said to Jeremiah, May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us, if we do not act entirely according to all the word with which the Lord thy God may send thee to us:
Et ceux-ci dirent à Jérémie: Que le Seigneur soit entre nous témoin de la vérité et de notre bonne foi, si nous n’agissons pas conformément à toute parole avec laquelle le Seigneur ton Dieu t’aura envoyé vers nous.
6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will hearken to the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee; in order that it may be well with us, when we hearken to the voice of the Lord our God.
Soit bonne, soit défavorable, nous obéirons à la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu, vers qui nous t’envoyons, afin que bien nous soit, lorsque nous aurons écouté la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu.
7 And it came to pass at the end of ten days, that the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah.
Or, lorsque dix jours eurent été accomplis, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie.
8 Then called he Jochanan the son of Kareach, and all the captains of the armies who were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,
Et il appela Johanan, fils de Carée, tous les princes des Sommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu’au grand.
9 And he said unto them, Thus hath said the Lord, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your humble supplication before him:
Et il leur dit: Voici ce que di t le Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël, vers qui vous m’avez envoyé afin de répandre vos prières en sa présence:
10 If ye will indeed remain in this land, then will I build you up, and I will not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I have bethought me of the evil that I have done unto you.
Si vous demeurez en repos dans cette terre, je vous édifierai, et je ne détruirai pas; je planterai, et je n’arracherai pas; car je suis apaisé par le mal que je vous ai fait.
11 Be ye not afraid because of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid: have no fear of him, saith the Lord; for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you out of his hand.
Ne craignez pas la face du roi de Babylone, que tremblants d’effroi vous redoutez; ne le craignez pas, dit le Seigneur, parce que moi je suis avec vous, afin de vous sauver, et de vous tirer de sa main.
12 And I will give unto you mercy, that he may have mercy upon you, and let you return to your own land.
Et je vous donnerai mes miséricordes et j’aurai pitié de vous, et je vous ferai habiter dans votre terre.
13 But if ye say, We will not remain in this land, so as not to hearken to the voice of the Lord your God,
Mais si vous dites: Nous n’habiterons pas dans cette terre, et nous n’écouterons pas la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu,
14 Saying, No; but into the land of Egypt will we go, that we may not see war, nor hear the sound of the cornet, and that we may not have hunger for bread; and there will we dwell;
Disant: En aucune manière; mais nous irons dans la terre d’Egypte, où nous ne verrons pas la guerre, où nous n’entendrons pas le bruit de la trompette, où nous ne souffrirons pas la faim, et nous y habiterons:
15 And now therefore hear the word of the Lord, ye remnant of Judah, Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, If ye will indeed set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go thither to sojourn there:
À cause de cela, écoutez maintenant la parole du Seigneur, restes de Juda. Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Si vous tournez votre face afin d’entrer en Egypte, et que vous y entriez pour y habiter,
16 Then shall the sword, of which ye are afraid, there overtake you in the land of Egypt; and the famine, whereof ye are in dread, shall there cleave close unto you in Egypt; and there shall ye die.
Le glaive, que vous redoutez, vous atteindra là, dans la terre d’Egypte; et la famine, au sujet de laquelle vous êtes inquiets, s’attachera à vous en Egypte, et vous y mourrez.
17 So shall be all the men that have set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there, —they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; and they shall have none that remaineth or escapeth from the evil that I am bringing over them.
Et tous les hommes qui ont tourné leurs faces afin d’entrer en Egypte et d’y habiter seront détruits par le glaive, et par la famine, et par la peste; et nul d’entre eux ne demeurera, et n’échappera à la face du mal que moi j’amènerai sur eux.
18 For thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, As my anger and my fury were poured forth over the inhabitants of Jerusalem: so shall my fury be poured forth over you, when ye enter into Egypt; and ye shall become an oath, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a disgrace; and ye shall never see this place again.
Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Comme ma colère et ma fureur se sont allumées contre les habitants de Jérusalem, ainsi s’allumera contre vous mon indignation, lorsque vous serez entrés en Egypte; et vous serez en exécration, en stupeur, en malédiction et en opprobre; et jamais plus vous ne verrez ce lieu.
19 The Lord hath spoken concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah, “Ye shall not go into Egypt:” ye must know for certain that I have warned you this day.
Voici la parole du Seigneur sur vous, restes de Juda: N’entrez pas en Egypte; sachant, vous saurez que je vous ai protesté aujourd’hui,
20 For ye have dissembled in regard to what your intentions are; for ye sent me unto the Lord your God, saying, Pray in our behalf unto the Lord our God: and in accordance with all that the Lord our God may say, so tell unto us, and we will do it.
Que vous avez trompé vos âmes; car c’est vous qui m’avez envoyé vers le Seigneur notre Dieu, disant: Prie pour nous le Seigneur notre Dieu; et tout ce que t’aura dit le Seigneur notre Dieu, annonce-nous-le, et nous le ferons.
21 And I have told it to you this day; but ye have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord your God, and this in all with which he hath sent me unto you.
Et je vous l’ai annoncé aujourd’hui, et vous n’avez pas écouté la voix du Seigneur votre Dieu, dans toutes les choses pour lesquelles il m’a envoyé vers vous.
22 But now know for certain that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go to sojourn there.
Maintenant donc, sachant, vous saurez que c’est par le glaive, et par la famine, et par la peste que vous mourrez dans le lieu dans lequel vous avez voulu entrer afin d’y habiter.
