Jeremiah 41

1 Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethanyah the son of Elishama', of the royal seed, and the chiefs of the king, even ten men with him, came unto Gedalyahu the son of Achikam to Mizpah; and they ate there bread together in Mizpah.

Et il arriva dans le septième mois qu’Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, fils d’Elisama, de la race royale, et les grands du roi, et dix hommes avec lui vinrent vers Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, à Masphath; et ils mangèrent là des pains ensemble à Masphath.

2 Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethanyah, and the ten men that were with him, and smote Gedalyahu the son of Achikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and put to death him, whom the king of Babylon had appointed governor over the land.

Or Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, se leva, et les dix hommes qui étaient avec lui, et ils frappèrent Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, fils de Saphan, par le glaive, et tuèrent celui qu’avait préposé le roi de Babylone sur la terre.

3 And all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedalyahu, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, even the men of war, did Ishmael slay.

Tous les Juifs aussi qui étaient avec Godolias, à Masphath, et les Chaldéens qui se trouvèrent là, et les hommes de guerre, Ismahel les frappa.

4 And it came to pass on the second day after he had put Gedalyahu to death, while no man knew of it,

Mais le second jour après qu’il eut tué Godolias, personne encore ne le sachant,

5 That there came certain men from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men [in all], having their beards shaven, and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with meat-offerings and frankincense in their hand, to bring the same to the house of the Lord.

Quatre-vingts hommes vinrent de Sichem, de Silo et de Samarie, la barbe rasée, et les habits déchirés, et le visage défiguré; ils portaient de l’encens et des présents, afin de les offrir dans la maison du Seigneur.

6 And Ishmael the son of Nethanyah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, going along and weeping: and it came to pass as he met them, that he said unto them, Come to Gedalyahu the son of Achikam.

Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, étant donc sorti de Masphath à leur rencontre, allait marchant en pleurant; or, lorsqu’il les eut rencontrés, il leur dit: Venez vers Godolias, fils d’Ahicam,

7 And it happened, as they entered into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethanyah slaughtered them, [and cast them] into the midst of the cistern, he, and the men that were with him.

Et lorsqu’ils furent arrivés au milieu de la cité, Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, les tua et les jeta vers le milieu de la fosse, et les hommes qui étaient avec lui.

8 But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not; for we have some things hidden in the field, [such as] wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey. So he forbore, and slew them not in the midst of their brethren.

Mais dix hommes se trouvèrent parmi eux qui dirent à Ismahel: Ne nous faites pas mourir, parce que nous avons des trésors cachés dans le champ, du blé, de l’orge, de l’huile et du miel. Et il s’arrêta et ne les tua pas avec leurs frères.

9 And the cistern wherein Ishmael cast all the corpses of the men, whom he had slain in company with Gedalyahu, is the same which king Assa had made on account of Ba'sha the king of Israel: this did Ishmael the son of Nethanyah fill with slain persons.

Or la fosse dans laquelle Ismahel avait jeté tous les cadavres des hommes qu’il tua à cause de Godolias, est celle-là même qu’avait faite le roi Asa à cause de Baasa, roi d’Israël; Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, la remplit de morts.

10 Then did Ishmael carry away captive all the residue of the people that were in Mizpah, the king's daughters, and all the people that were remaining in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had entrusted to Gedalyahu the son of Achikam: and Ishmael the son of Nethanyah carried them away captive, and went off to pass over to the children of Ammon.

Et Ismahel fit prisonniers tous les restes du peuple qui étaient à Masphath, les filles du roi et tout le peuple qui était demeuré à Masphath, que Nabuzardan, prince de la milice, avait recommandés à Godolias, fils d’Ahicam. Et Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, les prit, et s’en alla afin de passer vers les enfants d’Ammon.

11 But when Jochanan the son of Kareach, and all the captains of the armies that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethanyah had done:

Mais Johanan, fils de Carée, et tous les princes des hommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui, apprirent tout le mal qu’avait fait Ismahel, fils de Nathanias.

12 Then did they take all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethanyah, and found him by the great water[-pool] that is near Gib'on.

Et ayant pris tous les hommes de guerre, ils partirent afin de combattre Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, et ils le trouvèrent près des grandes eaux qui sont à Gabaon.

13 And it came to pass, when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Jochanan the son of Kareach, and all the captains of the armies that were with him, that they were rejoiced.

Et lorsque tout le peuple qui était avec Ismahel eut vu Johanan, fils de Carée, et tous les princes des hommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui, ils se réjouirent.

14 And all the people that Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned about and returned, and went unto Jochanan the son of Kareach.

Et tout le peuple qu’Ismahel avait pris à Masphath retourna; et, étant retourné, il vint vers Johanan, fils de Carée.

15 But Ishmael the son of Nethanyah escaped with eight men from the presence of Jochanan, and he went to the children of 'Ammon.

Mais Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, s’enfuit avec huit hommes de devant la face de Johanan, et s’en alla vers les enfants d’Ammon.

16 Then took Jochanan the son of Kareach, and all the captains of the armies that were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethanyah, from Mizpah, after he had slain Gedalyah the son of Achikam, the adult males, the men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gib'on;

Johanan, fils de Carée, et tous les princes des hommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui, prirent donc tous les restes du peuple qu’il avait retirés des mains d’Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, et ramenés de Masphath, après qu’il eut tué Godolias, fils d’Ahicam; tous les hommes vaillants au combat et les femmes, les enfants et les eunuques qu’il avait ramenés de Gabaon.

17 And they went, and remained in Geruth-Kimham, which is by Beth-lechem, to go to enter into Egypt,

Et ils s’en allèrent, et ils s’arrêtèrent en passant à Chamaam, près de Bethléhem, afin de se rendre et d’entrer en Egypte,

18 Because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them; because Ishmael the son of Nethanyah had slain Gedalyahu the son of Achikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed governor over the land.

À cause des Chaldéens; car ils les craignaient, parce qu’Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, avait tué Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, qu’avait préposé le roi de Babylone sur la terre de Juda.
