Jeremiah 40
1 The word that came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had dismissed him from Ramah, when he had taken him as he was bound in chains in the midst of all the exiles of Jerusalem and Judah, who were carried away into exile unto Babylon.
Paroles qui furent adressées à Jérémie par le Seigneur après qu’il fut mis en liberté à Rama par Nabuzardan, chef de la milice, quand il le prit lié de chaînes au milieu de ceux qui émigraient de Jérusalem et de Juda et étaient conduits à Babylone.
2 Then took the captain of the guard Jeremiah, and said unto him, The Lord thy God had spoken this evil over this place;
Prenant donc Jérémie, le prince de la milice lui dit: Le Seigneur ton Dieu a prononcé ce mal sur ce lieu,
3 Now the Lord hath brought it [to fulfillment], and hath done according as he had spoken; because ye had sinned against the Lord, and had not hearkened to his voice; and therefore is this thing come upon you.
Et il l’a amené; ainsi le Seigneur a fait comme il a dit, parce que vous avez péché contre le Seigneur, et que vous n’avez pas écouté sa voix; c’est ainsi que cela vous est arrivé.
4 And now, behold, I have freed thee this day from the chains which were upon thy hand. If it seem good in thy eyes to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will direct my eye unto thee; but if it seem ill in thy eyes to come with me to Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and proper in thy eyes to go, thither go.
Maintenant donc, voilà que je t’ai délivré des chaînes que tu avais aux mains; s’il te plaît de venir avec moi à Babylone, viens, et je tiendrai mes yeux sur toi; mais s’il te déplaît de venir avec moi à Babylone, demeure ici; voilà toute cette terre en ta présence; ce que tu choisiras, tu l’auras, et où il te plaira d’aller, vas-y.
5 And as he did not yet turn about, [he said, ] Go then back to Gedalyah the son of Achikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath appointed governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him in the midst of the people; or wheresoever it seemeth proper in thy eyes to go, go. And the captain of the guard gave him an allowance and a present, and then dismissed him.
Et ne viens pas avec moi, tu le peux; mais habite chez Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, fils de Saphan, que le roi de Babylone a préposé sur les villes de Juda; habite donc avec lui au milieu du peuple; ou bien va partout où il te plaira d’aller. Le chef de la milice lui donna aussi des vivres et des présents, et le renvoya.
6 So did Jeremiah come unto Gedalyah the son of Achikam to Mizpah; and he dwelt with him in the midst of the people that had been left in the land.
Or Jérémie vint vers Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, à Masphath, et il habita avec lui au milieu du peuple qui avait été laissé dans le pays.
7 Now when all the captains of the armies who were in the field, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedalyahu the son of Achikam governor over the land, and that he had entrusted unto him men, and women, and children, and these of the poorest of the land, of those that had not been carried away into exile to Babylon:
Et lorsque tous les princes de l’armée des Juifs, qui avaient été dispersés en diverses contrées, eux et leurs compagnons, eurent appris que le roi de Babylone avait préposé Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, sur la terre de Juda, et qu’il lui avait recommandé les hommes, les femmes et les petits enfants, et ceux d’entre les pauvres de la terre qui n’avaient pas été transférés à Babylone,
8 Then came they to Gedalyah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethanyahu, and Jochanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareach, and Serayah the son of Tanchumeth, and the sons of 'Ephai the Netophathite, and Yezanyahu the son of a Ma'achathite, they and their men.
Ils vinrent vers Godolias à Masphath, savoir: Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, et Johanan, et Jonathan, fils de Carée, et Saréas, fils de Thanéhumeth, et les enfants d’Ophi, qui étaient de Nétophati, et Jézonias, fils de Maachati, eux et les leurs.
9 And Gedalyahu the son of Achikam the son of Shaphan swore unto them and unto their men, saying, Have no fear to serve the Chaldeans: remain in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.
Et Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, fils de Saphan, jura à eux et à leurs compagnons, disant: Ne craignez point de servir les Chaldéens; demeurez dans cette terre, et servez le roi de Babylone, et bien vous sera.
10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans, who will come unto us; but ye, gather ye together wine, and summer-fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities of which ye have taken possession.
Voilà que moi, j’habite à Masphath pour répondre à l’ordre des Chaldéens qui sont envoyés vers nous; mais vous, recueillez la vendange, et la moisson, et l’huile; et renfermez-les dans des vases; et demeurez dans vos villes que vous occupez.
11 And so likewise all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of 'Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant unto Judah, and that he had appointed over them Gedalyahu the son of Achikam the son of Shaphan;
Mais aussi tous les Juifs qui étaient en Moab, et parmi les enfants d’Ammon, et dans l’Idumée, et dans toutes les contrées, ayant appris que le roi de Babylone avait laissé des restes du peuple dans Juda, et qu’il avait préposé sur eux Godolias, fils d’Ahicam. fils de Saphan,
12 And then did all the Jews return out of all places whither they had been driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedalyahu, unto Mizpah, and gathered together wine and summer-fruits in very great abundance.
Tous ces Juifs, dis-je, retournèrent de tous les lieux où ils s’étaient enfuis, et vinrent dans la terre de Juda vers Godolias, à Masphath; et ils recueillirent du vin, et une moisson très abondante.
13 And Jochanan the son of Kareach, and all the captains of the armies that were in the field, came to Gedalyahu to Mizpah,
Mais Johanan, fils de Carée, et tous les princes de l’armée, qui étaient dispersés en diverses contrées, vinrent vers Godolias à Masphath,
14 And they said unto him, Dost thou at all know that Ba'alis the king of the children of 'Ammon hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethanyah to deprive thee of life? But Gedalyahu the son of Achikam believed them not.
Et lui dirent: Sachez que Baalis, roi des enfants d’Ammon, a envoyé Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, pour vous ôter la vie. Et Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, ne les crut pas.
15 And Jochanan the son of Kareach said to Gedalyahu secretly in Mizpah, as followeth, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethanyah, and no man shall know of it: wherefore should he deprive thee of life, whereby all the Jews who are gathered unto thee would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah be lost?
Mais Johanan, fils de Carée, dit en particulier à Godolias, à Masphath, disant: J’irai et je frapperai Ismahel, fils de Nathanias, personne ne le sachant, de peur qu’il ne tue votre âme, et que ne soient dispersés tous les Juifs qui sont rassemblés auprès de vous; et les restes de Juda périront.
16 But Gedalyahu the son of Achikam said unto Jochanan the son of Kareach, Thou shalt not do this thing; for thou speakest a falsehood concerning Ishmael.
Et Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, dit à Johanan, fils de Carée: Ne fais pas cela; car tu parles faussement d’Ismahel.
