Jeremiah 38
1 And Shephatyah the son of Matthan, and Gedalyahu the son of Pashchur, and Juchal the son of Shelemyahu, and Pashchur the son of Malkiyah, heard the words that Jeremiah was speaking unto all the people, saying,
১মত্তনের ছেলে শফটিয়, পশহূরের ছেলে গদলিয়, শেলিমিয়ের ছেলে যিহূখল ও মল্কিয়ের ছেলে পশহূর শুনল যে, সমস্ত লোকদের কাছে যিরমিয় ঘোষণা করছিলেন। তিনি বলছিলেন,
2 Thus hath said the Lord, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; and he shall have his life as a booty, and shall live.
২“সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলেন, ‘যে কেউ এই শহরে থাকবে, সে তরোয়ালে, দূর্ভিক্ষে ও মহামারীতে মারা যাবে; কিন্তু যে কেউ কলদীয়দের কাছে যাবে, সে বাঁচবে। সে লুটিত বস্তুর মত তার প্রাণ বাঁচাবে’।
3 Thus hath said the Lord, This city shall surely be given up into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall capture it.
৩সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলেন, ‘এই শহর নিশ্চয়ই বাবিলের রাজার সৈন্যদলের হাতে সমর্পিত হবে; তারা এটি দখল করবে’।”
4 Thereupon said the princes unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death; for the cause that he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that are yet left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words unto them; for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but their hurt.
৪তখন শাসনকর্তারা রাজাকে বললেন, “এই লোকটিকে মেরে ফেলা হোক। কারণ এই ভাবে কথা বলে এই শহরে অবশিষ্ট সৈন্যদের ও লোকেরা হাত দুর্বল করছে। সে এই লোকদের নিরাপত্তার কথা প্রচার না করে, অমঙ্গলের কথা প্রচার করে।”
5 Then said king Zedekiah, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not able to do any thing against you.
৫তাই রাজা সিদিকিয় বললেন, “সে তো তোমাদের হাতেই রয়েছে; কারণ রাজা তোমাদের বাধা দেবেন না।”
6 Then did they take Jeremiah, and cast him into the pit of Malkiyahu the son of the king, that was in the court of the prison: and they let Jeremiah down with cords; but in the pit there was no water, but mire; so that Jeremiah sunk into the mire.
৬তখন তারা যিরমিয়কে ধরে রাজার ছেলে মল্কিয়ের কুয়োতে ফেলে দিল। এই কুয়োটি ছিল পাহারাদারদের উঠানের মধ্যে। তারা যিরমিয়কে দড়ি দিয়ে সেই কুয়োতে নামিয়ে দিল। সেখানে জল ছিল না, শুধু কাদা ছিল; আর যিরমিয় সেই কাদার মধ্যে ডুবে যেতে লাগলেন।
7 Now when 'Ebed-melech the Cushi, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had placed Jeremiah into the pit; while the king was sitting in the gate of Benjamin:
৭এখন রাজবাড়ীর একজন কূশীয় নপুংসক এবদ-মেলক শুনতে পেল যে, যিরমিয়কে কুয়োতে ফেলে দেওয়া হয়েছে। তখন রাজা বিন্যামীন ফটকে বসে ছিলেন।
8 'Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spoke to the king, saying,
৮এবদ-মেলক রাজবাড়ী থেকে বের হয়ে রাজাকে গিয়ে বলল,
9 My lord, O king, these men have done wrong in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the pit; and he would have had to die [as it is] in the place where he was for hunger; for there is no more bread in the city.
৯“হে আমার প্রভু মহারাজ, এই লোকেরা ভাববাদী যিরমিয়ের প্রতি যা করেছে, তা সমস্তই অন্যায়। তারা তাঁকে কুয়োতে ফেলে দিয়েছে; তিনি কুয়োয় ক্ষিদেতে মারা যাবেন, কারণ শহরে আর খাবার নেই।”
10 The king then commanded 'Ebed-melech the Cushi, saying, Take with thee from here thirty men, and bring up Jeremiah the prophet out of the pit, before he die.
১০তখন রাজা কূশীয় এবদ-মেলককে আদেশ দিলেন, “এখান থেকে ত্রিশজন লোক সঙ্গে নাও এবং ভাববাদী যিরমিয়কে, তাঁর মৃত্যুর আগে তুলে আন।”
11 So 'Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence cast-off clothes and old rags, and let them down into the pit to Jeremiah by cords.
১১তখন এবদ-মেলক সেই লোকদের সঙ্গে নিয়ে রাজবাড়ীর ভাঁড়ার ঘরের নীচের গেল। সে সেখান থেকে কতগুলি পুরানো ও ছেঁড়া কাপড় নিয়ে দড়ি দিয়ে সেই কুয়োর মধ্যে যিরমিয়ের কাছে নামিয়ে দিল।
12 And Ebed-melech the Cushi said unto Jeremiah, Put, I pray, these cast-off clothes and old rags under thy arm-pits beneath the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
১২কূশীয় এবদ-মেলক যিরমিয়কে বলল, “এই পুরানো ও ছেঁড়া কাপড়গুলি আপনি আপনার বগলের নিচে দিন।” যিরমিয় তাই করলেন।
13 So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and brought him up out of the pit: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
১৩তখন তারা দড়ি ধরে টেনে তাঁকে সেই কুয়ো থেকে তুলে আনল। যিরমিয় পাহারাদারদের উঠানে থাকলেন।
14 Then sent king Zedekiah, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that was in the house of the Lord; and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee something: conceal nothing from me.
১৪তারপর রাজা সিদিকিয় লোক পাঠিয়ে ভাববাদী যিরমিয়কে সদাপ্রভুর গৃহের তৃতীয় প্রবেশপথে ডেকে আনলেন। রাজা যিরমিয়কে বললেন, “আমি আপনাকে কিছু জিজ্ঞাসা করতে চাই। আমার কাছ থেকে কিছুই লুকাবেন না।”
15 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, If I should tell it unto thee, behold, thou wilt surely put me to death; and if I should give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.
১৫তখন যিরমিয় সিদিকিয়কে বললেন, “আমি যদি আপনাকে উত্তর দিই, আপনি কি আমাকে হত্যা করবেন না? আর আমি যদি আপনাকে পরামর্শ দিই, তবে আপনি আমার কথা শুনবেন না।”
16 So king Zedekiah swore unto Jeremiah secretly, saying, As the Lord liveth, who hath made for us this soul, I will not put thee to death, nor will I give thee up into the hand of these men that seek thy life.
১৬এতে রাজা সিদিকিয় গোপনে যিরমিয়ের কাছে শপথ করে বললেন, “জীবন্ত সদাপ্রভুর দিব্যি, যিনি আমাদের সৃষ্টি করেছেন, আমি আপনাকে হত্যা করব না বা আপনাকে তাদের হাতে সমর্পণ করব না, যারা আপনার প্রাণের খোঁজ করছে।”
17 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus hath said the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, If thou wilt indeed go forth unto the princes of the king of Babylon, then shall thy soul live, and this city shall not be burnt with fire; and thou shalt live, thou with thy household;
১৭তখন যিরমিয় সিদিকিয়কে বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু, বাহিনীগণের ঈশ্বর, ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর এই কথা বলেন, ‘তুমি যদি বাবিলের রাজার প্রধানদের কাছে যাও, তবে তুমি বাঁচবে এবং এই শহরও পুড়িয়ে দেওয়া হবে না। তুমি ও তোমার পরিবার বাঁচবে।
18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the princes of the king of Babylon, then shall this city be given up into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou thyself shalt not escape out of their hand.
১৮কিন্তু যদি বাবিলের রাজার সেনাপ্রধানদের কাছে না যাও, তবে এই শহর কলদীয়দের হাতে সমর্পিত হবে। তারা এটি পুড়িয়ে দেবে এবং আর তুমি নিজেও তাদের হাত থেকে রেহাই পাবে না’।”
19 Then said king Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, I am in dread of the Jews that have run away to the Chaldeans, lest these deliver me into their hand, and they might ill-use me.
১৯রাজা সিদিকিয় তখন যিরমিয়কে বললেন, “যে সব যিহূদী কলদীয়দের পক্ষে গেছে, আমি তাদের ভয় করি, কারণ হয়তো আমি তাদের হাতে সমর্পিত হবো, আর তারা আমার সঙ্গে খারাপ ব্যবহার করবে।”
20 But Jeremiah said, They will not give [thee] up. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the Lord, in that which I speak unto thee; so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
২০যিরমিয় বললেন, “তারা আপনাকে সমর্পণ করবে না। আমি আপনাকে যা বলছি, সদাপ্রভুর সেই বার্তার বাধ্য হন। তাহলে আপনার ভাল হবে এবং আপনি বাঁচবে।
21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the Lord hath shown me:
২১কিন্তু যদি আপনি যেতে অস্বীকার করেন, তবে সদাপ্রভু আমার কাছে যা প্রকাশ করেছেন, তা এই:
22 And behold, all the women that are left in the house of the king of Judah shall be led forth to the princes of the king of Babylon; and these women shall say, “They have enticed, and have overpersuaded thee—thy men that should have sought thy welfare; thy feet are [now] sunk in the mire, and they have withdrawn themselves backward.”
২২‘যিহূদার রাজবাড়ীতে অবশিষ্ট স্ত্রীলোকদের বাবিলের রাজার সেনাপ্রধানদের সমর্পণ করা হবে। দেখ! সেই স্ত্রীলোকেরা আপনাকে বলবে, তোমার বন্ধুরা তোমাকে বিপথে নিয়ে গেছে, তোমাকে হারিয়ে দিয়েছে। তোমার পা কাদায় ডুবে গেছে; তোমার বন্ধুরা পালিয়ে গেছে’।
23 And all thy wives and thy children shall they bring out to the Chaldeans; and thou thyself shalt not escape out of their hand; for by the hand of the king of Babylon shalt thou be caught; and this city wilt thou cause to be burnt with fire.
২৩আপনার সব স্ত্রী ও ছেলে মেয়েদের কলদীয়দের কাছে নিয়ে যাওয়া হবে। আপনি নিজেও তাদের হাত থেকে রেহাই পাবেন না। আপনি বাবিলের রাজার হাতে ধরা পড়বেন, আর এই শহর পুড়িয়ে দেওয়া হবে।”
24 Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, that thou mayest not die.
২৪তখন সিদিকিয় যিরমিয়কে বললেন, “এই সব কথা কেউ যেন না জানে, তাহলে আপনি মারা যাবেন না।
25 And if the princes should hear that I have spoken with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, tell us, we pray thee, what thou hast spoken unto the king, conceal it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king hath spoken unto thee:
২৫যদি শাসনকর্তারা শোনে যে, আমি আপনার সঙ্গে কথা বলেছি যদি তারা এসে আপনাকে বলে, ‘তুমি রাজাকে যা বলেছ, তা আমাদের বল। আমাদের কাছ থেকে লুকাবে না, নাহলে আমরা তোমাকে হত্যা করব। রাজা তোমাকে যা বলেছেন তাও আমাদের বল’
26 Then shalt thou say unto them, I presented my humble supplication before the king, that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan, to die there.
২৬তবে আপনি তাদের বলবেন, ‘আমি রাজাকে মিনতি করছিলাম, আমি মারার জন্য যেন যোনাথনের বাড়িতে ফেরত না পাঠান’।”
27 And all the princes came unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them in accordance with all these words that the king had commanded. And they turned away silent from him; for the matter had not been made public.
২৭পরে শাসনকর্তারা সবাই যিরমিয়ের কাছে গিয়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, তাতে রাজা তাঁকে যে কথা বলতে আদেশ করেছিলেন যিরমিয় তাদের সেই সব উত্তরই দিলেন। তখন তারা তাঁর সাথে কথা বলা বন্ধ করল, কারণ রাজার সঙ্গে তাঁর কথাবার্তা তারা শোনেনি।
28 And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken. And it came to pass when Jerusalem was captured,
২৮যিরূশালেমের দখল হবার দিন পর্যন্ত যিরমিয় পাহারাদারদের সেই উঠানে থাকলেন।
