Jeremiah 29

1 And these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders of the exiles, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon;

Or ce sont ici les paroles des Lettres que Jérémie le Prophète envoya de Jérusalem au reste des Anciens de ceux qui avaient été transportés, et aux Sacrificateurs, et aux Prophètes, et à tout le peuple que Nébucadnetsar avait transporté de Jérusalem à Babylone;

2 (After king Jechonyah and the queen-mother, and the court-officers, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the locksmiths, were departed from Jerusalem; )

Après que le Roi Jéchonias fut sorti de Jérusalem, avec la Régente, et les Eunuques, et les principaux de Juda et de Jérusalem, et les charpentiers, et les serruriers.

3 By the hand of El'assah the son of Shaphan, and Gemaryah the son of Chilkiyah, [whom Zedekiah the king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, ] saying,

Par Elhasa fils de Saphan, et Guémarja fils de Hilkija, lesquels Sédécias Roi de Juda envoyait à Babylone vers Nébucadnetsar Roi de Babylone; [et ces Lettres] étaient de telle teneur:

4 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all the exiles, whom I have caused to be carried into exile from Jerusalem unto Babylon,

Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël, à tous ceux qui ont été transportés, [et] que j'ai fait transporter de Jérusalem à Babylone.

5 Build ye houses, and dwell therein; and plant gardens, and eat their fruit;

Bâtissez des maisons, et [y] demeurez; plantez des jardins, et en mangez les fruits.

6 Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may multiply there, and not be diminished.

Prenez des femmes, et engendrez des fils et des filles; prenez aussi des femmes pour vos fils, et donnez vos filles à des hommes, et qu'elles enfantent des fils et des filles, et multipliez là, et ne soyez point diminués.

7 And seek the welfare of the city whither I have banished you, and pray in its behalf unto the Lord; for in its welfare shall ye fare well.

Et cherchez la paix de la ville dans laquelle je vous ai fait transporter, et priez l'Eternel pour elle; parce qu'en sa paix vous aurez la paix.

8 For thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Let not your prophets, that are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you, and do not hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamt;

Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: que vos prophètes qui sont parmi vous, et vos devins, ne vous séduisent point, et ne croyez point à vos songes que vous songez.

9 For with falsehood do they prophesy unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord.

Parce qu'ils vous prophétisent faussement en mon Nom; je ne les ai point envoyés, dit l'Eternel.

10 For thus hath said the Lord, Because only after the accomplishment of seventy years for Babylon, will I visit you, and fulfill respecting you my good word, in causing you to return to this place.

Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel: lorsque les soixante-dix ans seront accomplis à Babylone, je vous visiterai, et je mettrai en exécution ma bonne parole sur vous, pour vous faire retourner en ce lieu-ci.

11 For I alone know the thoughts that I entertain respecting you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a [happy] future and hope.

Car je sais que les pensées que j'ai sur vous, dit l'Eternel, sont des pensées de paix, et non pas d'adversité, pour vous donner une fin telle que vous attendez.

12 And you will call upon me, and ye will go and will pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Alors vous m'invoquerez pour vous en retourner; et vous me prierez, et je vous exaucerai.

13 And ye will seek me, and shall find me, for ye will search for me with all your heart.

Vous me chercherez, et vous me trouverez, après que vous m'aurez recherché de tout votre cœur.

14 And I will be found of you, saith the Lord; and I will bring back your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will cause you to return unto the place whence I have banished you.

Car je me ferai trouver à vous, dit l'Eternel, je ramènerai vos captifs, et je vous rassemblerai d'entre toutes les nations, et de tous les lieux où je vous aurai dispersés, dit l'Eternel, et je vous ferai retourner au lieu dont je vous aurai transportés.

15 Because ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon.

Parce que vous aurez dit: l'Eternel nous a suscité des Prophètes qui ont [prophétisé que nous viendrions] à Babylone.

16 But thus hath said the Lord concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into exile;

C'est pourquoi ainsi a dit l'Eternel, touchant le Roi qui est assis sur le trône de David, et touchant tout le peuple qui habite dans cette ville, [c'est-à-dire], touchant vos frères qui ne sont point allés avec vous en captivité;

17 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will send out against them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence; and I will render them like the detestable figs, that cannot be eaten, from being so bad.

Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées: voici, je m'en vais envoyer sur eux l'épée, la famine, et la mortalité, et je les ferai devenir comme des figues qui sont étrangement mauvaises, [et] qu'on ne peut manger, tant elles sont mauvaises.

18 And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will make them a horror unto all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse, and an astonishment, and a derision, and a disgrace, among all the nations whither I have driven them;

Et je les poursuivrai avec l'épée, par la famine, et par la mortalité; et je les abandonnerai à être agités par tous les Royaumes de la terre, et pour être en exécration, en étonnement, en raillerie, et en opprobre à toutes les nations parmi lesquelles je les aurai dispersés.

19 For the reason that they have not hearkened to my words, saith the Lord, since I sent unto them my servants the prophets, causing them to rise up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the Lord.

Parce qu'ils n'ont point écouté mes paroles, dit l'Eternel, qui leur ai envoyé mes serviteurs Prophètes, en me levant dès le matin, et les envoyant; et vous n'avez point écouté, dit l'Eternel.

20 But ye—hear ye the word of the Lord, all ye exiles whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Vous tous donc qui avez été transportés, [et] que j'ai renvoyés de Jérusalem à Babylone, écoutez la parole de l'Eternel.

21 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Achab the son of Kolayah, and of Zedekiah the son of Ma'asseyah, who prophesy unto you in my name falsehood, Behold, I will give them up into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon: and he shall smite them before your eyes.

Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël, touchant Achab fils de Kolaja, et touchant Sédécias fils de Mahaséja, qui vous prophétisent faussement en mon Nom: voici, je m'en vais les livrer en la main de Nébucadnetsar Roi de Babylone, et il les frappera devant vos yeux.

22 And a curse shall be derived from them for all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, “May the Lord make thee like Zedekiah and like Achab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;”

Et on prendra d'eux un formulaire de malédiction parmi tous ceux qui ont été transportés de Juda, qui [sont] à Babylone, en disant: l'Eternel te mette en tel état qu'il a mis Sédécias et Achab, lesquels le Roi de Babylone a grillés au feu.

23 Because they have done scandalous deeds in Israel, and have committed adultery with the wives of their neighbors, and have spoken in my name falsehood, which I had not commanded them; whereas I am the one that know, and am the witness, saith the Lord.

Parce qu'ils ont commis des impuretés en Israël, et qu'ils ont commis adultère avec les femmes de leurs prochains, et qu'ils ont dit en mon Nom des paroles fausses, que je ne leur avais pas commandées, et je le sais, et j'en suis témoin, dit l'Eternel.

24 And to Shema'yahu the Nechelamite shalt thou say, as followeth,

Parle aussi à Sémahia Néhélamite, en disant:

25 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent in thy name letters unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephanyah the son of Ma'asseyah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: parce que tu as envoyé en ton Nom des Lettres à tout le peuple qui [est] à Jérusalem, et à Sophonie fils de Mahaséja Sacrificateur, et à tous les Sacrificateurs, en disant:

26 The Lord hath appointed thee priest in the place of Jehoyada' the priest, that ye should be superintendents in the house of the Lord, for every man that is mad, and that prophesieth, that thou shouldst put him in the stocks, and in prison:

L'Eternel t'a établi pour Sacrificateur en la place de Jéhojadah le Sacrificateur, afin que vous ayez la charge de la maison de l'Eternel sur tout homme agité par l'esprit, et faisant du Prophète, pour les mettre en prison et aux fers:

27 And now, why hast thou not rebuked Jeremiah of 'Anathoth, who prophesieth to you?

Et maintenant, pourquoi n'as-tu pas réprimé Jérémie de Hanathot, qui vous prophétise?

28 For the reason that he hath sent unto us to Babylon saying, It will last a long time: build ye houses, and dwell therein; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit thereof.

Car à cause de cela il nous a envoyé dire à Babylone: la [captivité] sera longue: bâtissez des maisons, et [y] demeurez; plantez des jardins, et mangez-en les fruits.

29 And Zephanyah the priest read the letter before the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

(Or Sophonie le Sacrificateur avait lu ces Lettres-là, Jérémie le Prophète l'entendant, )

30 Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying,

C'est pourquoi la parole de l'Eternel fut [adressée] à Jérémie, en disant:

31 Send to all the exiles, saying, Thus hath said the Lord concerning Shema'yah the Nechlamite, Whereas Shema'yah hath prophesied unto you, while I have not sent him, and he hath caused you to rely on a falsehood:

Mande à tous ceux qui ont été transportés, et leur dis: ainsi a dit l'Eternel touchant Sémahia Néhélamite: parce que Sémahia vous a prophétisé, quoique je ne l'aie point envoyé, et vous a fait confier au mensonge;

32 Therefore thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I will inflict punishment on Shema'yah the Nechlamite, and on his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell in the midst of this people; and he shall not behold the good that I am doing for my people, saith the Lord; because he hath spoken revolt against the Lord.

A cause de cela l'Eternel a dit ainsi: voici, je m'en vais punir Sémahia Néhélamite et sa postérité, [et] il n'y aura personne de sa race qui habite parmi ce peuple, et il ne verra point le bien que je m'en vais faire à mon peuple, dit l'Eternel; parce qu'il a parlé de révolte contre l'Eternel.
