Jeremiah 22
1 Thus said the Lord, Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word;
Così parla l’Eterno: Scendi nella casa del re di Giuda, e pronunzia quivi questa parola, e di’:
2 And thou shalt say, Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:
Ascolta la parola dell’Eterno, o re di Giuda, che siedi sul trono di Davide: tu, i tuoi servitori e il tuo popolo, che entrate per queste porte!
3 Thus hath said the Lord, Execute ye justice and righteousness, and deliver him that is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor; and the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow shall ye not oppress, and do them no violence, and shed no innocent blood in this place.
Così parla l’Eterno: Fate ragione e giustizia, liberate dalla mano dell’oppressore colui al quale è tolto il suo, non fate torto né violenza allo straniero, all’orfano e alla vedova, e non spargete sangue innocente, in questo luogo.
4 For if ye indeed will do this thing, then shall enter in through the gates of this house kings sitting after David upon his throne, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.
Poiché, se metterete realmente ad effetto questa parola, dei re assisi sul trono di Davide entreranno per le porte di questa casa, montati su carri e su cavalli: essi, i loro servitori e il loro popolo.
5 But if ye will not hear these words, then do I swear by myself, saith the Lord, that this house shall become a ruin.
Ma, se non date ascolto a queste parole, io giuro per me stesso, dice l’Eterno, che questa casa sarà ridotta in una rovina.
6 For thus hath said the Lord concerning the house of the king of Judah, A Gil'ad [though] thou art unto me, a summit of the Lebanon: yet I will surely change thee into a wilderness, cities which are not inhabited.
Poiché così parla l’Eterno riguardo alla casa del re di Giuda: Tu eri per me come Galaad, come la vetta del Libano. Ma, certo, io ti ridurrò simile a un deserto, a delle città disabitate.
7 And I will make ready against thee destroyers, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down the choice of thy cedars, and cast them into the fire.
Preparo contro di te dei devastatori armati ciascuno delle sue armi; essi abbatteranno i cedri tuoi più belli, e li getteranno nel fuoco.
8 And [when] many nations [then] pass by this city, they will say every man to his neighbor, Wherefore hath the Lord done the like unto this great city?
Molte nazioni passeranno presso questa città, e ognuno dirà all’altro: “Perché l’Eterno ha egli fatto così a questa grande città?”
9 Then shall they say, Because they had forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and bowed down unto other gods, and served them.
E si risponderà: “Perché hanno abbandonato il patto dell’Eterno, del loro Dio, perché si son prostrati davanti ad altri dèi, e li hanno serviti”.
10 Weep not for the dead, and do not bemoan him: weep sorely for him that goeth away; for he shall never return any more, and see the land of his birth.
Non piangete per il morto, non vi affliggete per lui; ma piangete, piangete per colui che se ne va, perché non tornerà più, e non vedrà più il suo paese natìo.
11 For thus hath said the Lord respecting Shallum the son of Josiah the king of Judah, who reigneth in the place of Josiah his father, who is gone forth out of this place, He shall never return thither any more;
Poiché così parla l’Eterno, riguardo a Shallum, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, che regnava in luogo di Giosia suo padre, e ch’è uscito da questo luogo: Egli non vi ritornerà più;
12 But in the place whither they have led him into exile, there shall he die; but this land shall he not see any more.
ma morrà nel luogo dove l’hanno menato in cattività, e non vedrà più questo paese.
13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice; that maketh his neighbor work without wages, and giveth him not the reward for his labor;
Guai a colui ch’edifica la sua casa senza giustizia, e le sue camere senza equità; che fa lavorare il prossimo per nulla, e non gli paga il suo salario;
14 That saith, I will build me a roomy house, and ample chambers, and cutteth himself out windows, and ceileth it with cedar, and painteth it with colors.
e dice: “Mi edificherò una casa grande e delle camere spaziose”, e vi fa eseguire delle finestre, la riveste di legno di cedro e la dipinge di rosso!
15 Shalt thou reign, because thou strivest to excel with cedar buildings? behold, thy father ate and drank, but he executed justice and righteousness: then was it well with him!
Regni tu forse perché hai la passione del cedro? Tuo padre non mangiava egli e non beveva? Ma faceva ciò ch’è retto e giusto, e tutto gli andava bene.
16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then was it well: is not this the proper knowledge of me? saith the Lord.
Egli giudicava la causa del povero e del bisognoso, e tutto gli andava bene. Questo non è egli conoscermi? dice l’Eterno.
17 But thy eyes and thy heart are directed on nothing but upon thy own gain, and upon innocent blood to shed it, and upon oppression, and upon extortion, to practise them.
Ma tu non hai occhi né cuore che per la tua cupidigia, per spargere sangue innocente, e per fare oppressione e violenza.
18 Therefore thus hath said the Lord concerning Jehoyakim the son of Josiah the king of Judah, They shall not lament for him, with, “Woe, my brother!” and, “Woe, sister!” they shall not lament for him, with “Woe, lord!” and, “Woe, to his glory!”
Perciò, così parla l’Eterno riguardo a Joiakim, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda: Non se ne farà cordoglio, dicendo: “Ahimè, fratel mio, ahimè sorella!” Non se ne farà cordoglio, dicendo: “Ahimè, signore, ahimè sua maestà!”
19 With the burial of an ass shall he be buried, dragged about and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
Sarà sepolto come si seppellisce un asino, trascinato e gettato fuori delle porte di Gerusalemme.
20 Ascend the Lebanon, and cry aloud; and let thy voice resound in Bashan; and cry aloud from 'Aharim; for crushed are all thy lovers.
Sali sul Libano e grida, alza la voce in Basan, e grida dall’Abarim, perché tutti i tuoi amanti sono distrutti.
21 I spoke unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy very youth, that thou didst not hearken to my voice.
Io t’ho parlato al tempo della tua prosperità, ma tu dicevi: “Io non ascolterò”. Questo è stato il tuo modo di fare fin dalla tua fanciullezza; tu non hai mai dato ascolto alla mia voce.
22 The wind shall scatter abroad all thy shepherds, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded because of all thy wickedness.
Tutti i tuoi pastori saranno pastura del vento e i tuoi amanti andranno in cattività; allora sarai svergognata, confusa, per tutta la tua malvagità.
23 O inhabitress of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how full of grace wilt thou be! when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail!
O tu che dimori sul Libano, che t’annidi fra i cedri, come farai pietà quando ti coglieranno i dolori, le doglie pari a quelle d’una donna di parto!
24 As I live, saith the Lord, though Conyahu the son of Jehoyakim the king of Judah were a signet upon my right hand, yet for a surety would I thence pluck thee;
Com’è vero ch’io vivo, dice l’Eterno, quand’anche Conia, figliuolo di Joiakim, re di Giuda, fosse un sigillo nella mia destra, io ti strapperei di lì.
25 And I will give thee into the hand of those that seek thy life, and into the hand of those of whom thou art afraid, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.
Io ti darò in mano di quelli che cercan la tua vita, in mano di quelli de’ quali hai paura, in mano di Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, in mano de’ Caldei.
26 And I will hurl thee out, and thy mother that hath born thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.
E caccerò te e tua madre che t’ha partorito, in un paese straniero dove non siete nati, e quivi morrete.
27 But to the land whitherward they direct their soul to return, thither shall they not return.
Ma quanto al paese al quale brameranno tornare, essi non vi torneranno.
28 Is this man Conyahu a despised broken image? or a vessel without value? wherefore are they hurled out, he and his seed, and are cast forth into a land which they know not?
Questo Conia è egli dunque un vaso spezzato, infranto? E’ egli un oggetto che non fa più alcun piacere? Perché son dunque cacciati, egli e la sua progenie, lanciati in un paese che non conoscono?
29 O land, land, land! hear the word of the Lord.
O paese, o paese o paese, ascolta la parola dell’Eterno!
30 Thus hath said the Lord, Write ye down this man as childless, as a man that shall not prosper in his days; for no man of his seed shall succeed to sit upon the throne of David, and to rule any more in Judah.
Così parla l’Eterno: Inscrivete quest’uomo come privo di figliuoli, come un uomo che non prospererà durante i suoi giorni; perché nessuno della sua progenie giungerà a sedersi sul trono di Davide, ed a regnare ancora su Giuda.
