Jeremiah 2

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

E veiu a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

2 Go and call out before the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus hath said the Lord, I remember unto thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thy espousals, thy going after me in the wilderness, through a land that is not sown.

Vae, e clama aos ouvidos de Jerusalem, dizendo: Assim diz o Senhor: Lembro-me de ti, da beneficencia da tua mocidade, e do amor dos teus desposorios, quando andavas após mim no deserto, n'uma terra que se não semeava.

3 A holy thing is Israel unto the Lord, the first of his fruits: all that devour him shall incur guilt; evil shall come over them, saith the Lord.

Então Israel era sanctidade para o Senhor, e as primicias da sua novidade: todos os que comiam eram tidos por culpados; o mal vinha sobre elles, diz o Senhor.

4 Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all ye families of the house of Israel.

Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, ó casa de Jacob, e todas as familias da casa de Israel:

5 Thus hath said the Lord, What fault did your fathers find in me, that they went away far from me, and walked after vanity, and became vain?

Assim diz o Senhor: Que injustiça acharam vossos paes em mim, para se alongarem de mim, e se foram após a vaidade, e se tornaram levianos?

6 That they said not, Where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of wildness, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land through which no one had passed, and where no man had dwelt?

E não disseram: Onde está o Senhor, que nos fez subir da terra do Egypto? que nos guiou pelo deserto, por uma terra de charnecas, e de covas, por uma terra de sequidão e sombra de morte, por uma terra pela qual ninguem passava, e homem nenhum morava n'ella?

7 And I brought you into the land of fruitful fields, to eat its fruit and its goodly products; but ye came and ye made unclean my land, and my heritage ye rendered an abomination.

E eu vos introduzi n'uma terra fertil, para comerdes o seu fructo e o seu bem; mas quando entrastes n'ella contaminastes a minha terra, e da minha herança fizestes uma abominação.

8 The priests said not, Where is the Lord? and they that handle the law knew me not; and the shepherds transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied in the name of Ba'al, and after things that cannot profit did they walk.

Os sacerdotes não disseram: Onde está o Senhor? E os que tratavam da lei não me conheciam, e os pastores prevaricavam contra mim, e os prophetas prophetizavam por Baal, e andavam após o que de nada aproveita.

9 Therefore will I contend yet farther with you, saith the Lord, and with your children's children will I contend.

Portanto ainda contenderei comvosco, diz o Senhor; e até com os filhos de vossos filhos contenderei.

10 For pass over to the isles of the Chittites, and see; and unto Kedar send, and consider well and see if any thing like this hath happened.

Porque, passae ás ilhas de Chittim, e vêde; e enviae a Kedar, e attentae bem, e vêde se succedeu coisa similhante.

11 Hath a nation exchanged its gods, which are yet no gods? and [still] my people hath exchanged its glory for that which can not profit.

Houve alguma nação que tenha trocado os seus deuses, ainda que não sejam deuses? Todavia o meu povo trocou a sua gloria pelo que de nada aproveita.

12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and let your hair stand at an end, be ye greatly terrified, saith the Lord.

Espantae-vos d'isto, ó céus! e pasmae; e sêde grandemente assolados, diz o Senhor.

13 For two evils have my people committed: me have they forsaken, the source of living waters, to hew out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that cannot hold water.

Porque o meu povo fez duas maldades: a mim me deixaram, o manancial de aguas vivas, e cavaram cisternas, cisternas fendidas, que já não reteem aguas.

14 Is Israel a servant? or one born [to servitude] in the house? why hath he been given up to plunder?

Acaso é Israel um servo, ou nascido em casa? porque pois veiu a ser preza?

15 [That] over him young lions roared, let their voice resound, and changed his land into a waste, that his cities are burnt, left without an inhabitant?

Os filhos de leão bramaram sobre elle, levantaram a sua voz; e pozeram a sua terra em assolação; as suas cidades se queimaram, e ninguem habita n'ellas.

16 Even the children of Noph and Thachpanches have crushed the crown of thy head.

Até os filhos de Noph e de Tachphanes te quebraram o alto da cabeça.

17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, through thy forsaking the Lord thy God, while he was leading thee on the [right] way?

Porventura tu não te fazes isto a ti mesmo? pois deixas ao Senhor teu Deus, no tempo em que elle te guia pelo caminho.

18 And now what hast thou to do on the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Shichor? and what hast thou to do on the way of Asshur, to drink the waters of the river?

Agora, pois, que te importa a ti o caminho do Egypto, para beberes as aguas de Sihor? e que te importa a ti o caminho da Assyria, para beberes as aguas do rio?

19 Thy own wickedness shall chastise thee, and thy backslidings shall correct thee; and thou shalt know and see that evil and bitter was thy forsaking the Lord thy God, while the dread of me was not upon thee, saith the Lord Eternal of hosts.

A tua malicia te castigará, e os teus apartamentos te reprehenderão: sabe, pois, e vê, quão mal e amargo é deixares ao Senhor teu Deus, e não teres o meu temor comtigo, diz o Senhor Jehovah dos Exercitos.

20 Because from yore did I break thy yoke, did I burst asunder thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress: nevertheless upon every high hill and under every green tree thou makest thy bed, as harlot.

Quando eu já ha muito quebrava o teu jugo, e rompia as tuas ataduras, dizias tu: Nunca mais transgredirei; comtudo em todo o outeiro alto e debaixo de toda a arvore verde te andas encurvando e fornicando.

21 Yet I had planted thee as a branch of a noble vine, wholly of the proper seed; but how art thou changed unto me into a degenerate plant of an ignoble vine?

Eu mesmo te plantei por vide excellente, e todo fiel semente: como pois te tornaste para mim uma planta degenerada de vide estranha?

22 For though thou wash thyself with natron, and take for thyself much soap: yet would the stain of thy iniquity remain before me, saith the Lord Eternal.

Pelo que ainda que te laves com salitre, e amontoes sabão, comtudo a tua iniquidade está apontada diante de mim, diz o Senhor Jehovah.

23 How canst thou say, I am not become unclean, after the Be'alim have I not gone? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: [like] a swift dromedary bound fast to her ways;

Como dizes logo: Não estou contaminado nem andei após os baalins? vê o teu caminho no valle, conhece o que fizeste: dromedaria ligeira és, que anda torcendo os seus caminhos.

24 [Like] a wild ass used to the wilderness, that at her pleasure snuffeth up the wind; her lust—who can turn this away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month will they find her.

Jumenta montez, acostumada ao deserto, que, conforme o desejo da sua alma, sorve o vento, quem deteria o seu encontro? todos os que a buscarem, não se cançarão; no mez d'ella a acharão.

25 “Prevent thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from being thirsty;” but thou saidst, It is useless; no, for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

Retem o teu pé de ser descalço, e a tua garganta de ter sêde: porém tu dizes: Não ha esperança: não; porque amo os estranhos, e após elles andarei

26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so have the house of Israel been made ashamed, they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

Como fica confundido o ladrão quando o apanham, assim se confundem os da casa de Israel; elles, os seus reis, os seus principes, e os seus sacerdotes, e os seus prophetas,

27 Who say to the wood, Thou art my father; and to the stone, Thou hast brought us forth; for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face; but in the time of their misfortune will they say, Arise, and save us.

Que dizem ao páu: Tu és meu pae; e á pedra: Tu me geraste; porque me viraram as costas, e não o rosto: porém no tempo do seu trabalho dirão: Levanta-te, e livra-nos.

28 But where are then thy gods that thou hast made for thyself? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy misfortune; for equal to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah.

Onde pois estão os teus deuses, que fizeste para ti? que se levantem, se te podem livrar no tempo do teu trabalho: porque os teus deuses, ó Judah, são tantos em numero como as tuas cidades.

29 Wherefore will ye contend with me? all of you have transgressed against me, saith the Lord.

Porque contendeis comigo? todos vós transgredistes contra mim, diz o Senhor.

30 To no purpose have I smitten your children; correction they accepted not: your sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

Em vão castigareis os vossos filhos; não acceitarão o castigo: a vossa espada devorou os vossos prophetas como um leão destruidor.

31 O [present] generation, regard ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of deep darkness? wherefore say my people, We wander about; we cannot come any more unto thee?

Oh geração! considerae vós a palavra do Senhor: porventura tenho eu sido para Israel um deserto? ou uma terra da mais espessa escuridão? porque pois diz o meu povo: Temos determinado nunca mais vir a ti.

32 Can a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride her decorations? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Porventura esquece-se a virgem dos seus enfeites, ou a esposa dos seus sendaes? todavia o meu povo se esqueceu de mim, innumeraveis dias.

33 Why ornamentest thou thy way to seek for love? truly even the worst hast thou used thyself as thy ways.

Porque enfeitas o teu caminho, para buscares o amor? de sorte que até ás malignas ensinaste os teus caminhos.

34 Also on thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the innocent needy ones: not while breaking in [thy house] didst thou find them; but for all these things.

Até nas orlas dos teus vestidos se achou o sangue das almas dos innocentes e necessitados: o que não achei minando, mas em todas estas coisas.

35 Yet thou sayest, Yea, I am innocent, surely his anger is already turned away from me. Behold, I will hold judgment with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

E ainda dizes: Devéras que estou innocente, pois já a sua ira se desviou de mim: eis que entrarei em juizo comtigo, porquanto dizes: Não pequei.

36 Why makest thou thyself so very low to change thy way? also because of Egypt shalt thou be made ashamed, as thou wast put to shame because of Assyria.

Porque te desvias tanto, mudando o teu caminho? tambem do Egypto serás envergonhada, como foste envergonhada da Assyria.

37 Also from this one shalt thou go forth, with thy hands [clasped] over thy head; for the Lord hath rejected those on whom thou trustest and thou shalt not prosper with them.

Tambem d'aquelle sairás com as mãos sobre a tua cabeça; porque o Senhor rejeitou as tuas confianças, e não prosperarás com ellas
