Jeremiah 2
1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
La parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes:
2 Go and call out before the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus hath said the Lord, I remember unto thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thy espousals, thy going after me in the wilderness, through a land that is not sown.
Va et crie aux oreilles de Jérusalem en ces termes: Ainsi parle Yahweh: Je me suis souvenu de la piété de ta jeunesse, de l’amour de tes fiançailles, alors que tu me suivais au désert, au pays qu’on n’ensemence pas.
3 A holy thing is Israel unto the Lord, the first of his fruits: all that devour him shall incur guilt; evil shall come over them, saith the Lord.
Israël était la chose consacré à Yahweh, les prémices de son revenu; quiconque en mangeait se rendait coupable; le malheur fondait sur lui, — oracle de Yahweh.
4 Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all ye families of the house of Israel.
Ecoutez la parole de Yahweh, maison de Jacob, et vous toutes, familles de la maison d’Israël:
5 Thus hath said the Lord, What fault did your fathers find in me, that they went away far from me, and walked after vanity, and became vain?
Ainsi parle Yahweh: Quelle iniquité vos pères ont-ils trouvé en moi, pour s’éloigner de moi, pour suivre la vanité et devenir eux-mêmes vanité?
6 That they said not, Where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of wildness, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land through which no one had passed, and where no man had dwelt?
Ils n’ont pas dit: « Où est Yahweh, qui nous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, qui nous a guidés dans le désert, dans le pays aride et crevassé, dans le pays de sécheresse et d’ombre de mort, dans le pays où nul homme ne passe, et où personne n’habite? »
7 And I brought you into the land of fruitful fields, to eat its fruit and its goodly products; but ye came and ye made unclean my land, and my heritage ye rendered an abomination.
Et je vous ai fait venir dans un pays semblable à un verger, pour en manger les fruits et les biens, et, une fois entrés, vous avez souillé mon pays, et fait de mon héritage une abomination.
8 The priests said not, Where is the Lord? and they that handle the law knew me not; and the shepherds transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied in the name of Ba'al, and after things that cannot profit did they walk.
Les prêtres n’ont pas dit: « Où est Yahweh? » Les dépositaires de la loi ne m’ont pas connu; les pasteurs m’ont été infidèles, et les prophètes ont prophétisé par Baal; et ils ont suivi ceux qui ne sont d’aucun secours.
9 Therefore will I contend yet farther with you, saith the Lord, and with your children's children will I contend.
Aussi je veux encore plaider contre vous, — oracle de Yahweh, et je plaiderai contre les enfants de vos enfants.
10 For pass over to the isles of the Chittites, and see; and unto Kedar send, and consider well and see if any thing like this hath happened.
Passez donc aux îles de Céthim et regardez; envoyez à Cédar et observez bien; et voyez s’il y a là rien de semblable.
11 Hath a nation exchanged its gods, which are yet no gods? and [still] my people hath exchanged its glory for that which can not profit.
Une nation change-t-elle de dieux? — Et encore ce ne sont pas des dieux!... Et mon peuple a changé sa gloire contre ce qui ne sert à rien!
12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and let your hair stand at an end, be ye greatly terrified, saith the Lord.
Cieux, étonnez-vous-en, frémissez d’horreur et soyez stupéfaits, oracle de Yahweh!
13 For two evils have my people committed: me have they forsaken, the source of living waters, to hew out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that cannot hold water.
Car mon peuple a fait double mal: ils m’ont abandonné, moi, la source des eaux vives, pour se creuser des citernes, des citernes crevassées, qui ne retiennent pas l’eau.
14 Is Israel a servant? or one born [to servitude] in the house? why hath he been given up to plunder?
Israël est-il un esclave, est-il né d’un esclave dans la maison? Pourquoi donc est-il traité comme un butin?
15 [That] over him young lions roared, let their voice resound, and changed his land into a waste, that his cities are burnt, left without an inhabitant?
Contre lui les lionceaux rugissent, poussent leurs cris, et ils mettent son pays en dévastation. Ses villes sont incendiées, sans d’habitants.
16 Even the children of Noph and Thachpanches have crushed the crown of thy head.
Même les fils de Noph et de Taphnès te tondent le crâne!
17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, through thy forsaking the Lord thy God, while he was leading thee on the [right] way?
Cela ne t’arrive-t-il pas parce que tu as abandonné Yahweh, ton Dieu, au temps où il te dirigeait dans la voie?
18 And now what hast thou to do on the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Shichor? and what hast thou to do on the way of Asshur, to drink the waters of the river?
Et maintenant qu’as-tu à faire sur la route de l’Égypte, pour aller boire l’eau du Nil, et qu’as-tu à faire sur la route de l’Assyrie, pour aller boire l’eau du fleuve?
19 Thy own wickedness shall chastise thee, and thy backslidings shall correct thee; and thou shalt know and see that evil and bitter was thy forsaking the Lord thy God, while the dread of me was not upon thee, saith the Lord Eternal of hosts.
Ton impiété te châtie et tes rébellions te punissent! Sache donc et vois combien il est mauvais et amer d’avoir abandonné Yahweh, ton Dieu, et de n’avoir de moi aucune crainte, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh des armées.
20 Because from yore did I break thy yoke, did I burst asunder thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress: nevertheless upon every high hill and under every green tree thou makest thy bed, as harlot.
Car depuis longtemps tu as brisé ton joug, tu as rompu tes liens et tu as dit: « Je ne servirai plus! » Car sur toute colline élevée et sous ton arbre vert tu t’es étendue, comme une courtisane.
21 Yet I had planted thee as a branch of a noble vine, wholly of the proper seed; but how art thou changed unto me into a degenerate plant of an ignoble vine?
Et moi, je t’avais plantée comme une vigne excellente, tout entière d’une souche franche. Comment t’es-tu changée pour moi en sarments bâtards d’une vigne étrangère?
22 For though thou wash thyself with natron, and take for thyself much soap: yet would the stain of thy iniquity remain before me, saith the Lord Eternal.
Oui, quand tu te laverais à la soude, et que tu prodiguerais la potasse, ton iniquité ferait tache devant moi, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh.
23 How canst thou say, I am not become unclean, after the Be'alim have I not gone? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: [like] a swift dromedary bound fast to her ways;
Comment dis-tu: « Je ne me suis pas souillée; je ne suis pas allée après les Baals? » Vois les traces de tes pas dans la Vallée; reconnais ce que tu as fait! Chamelle légère, croisant ses pas en tout sens,
24 [Like] a wild ass used to the wilderness, that at her pleasure snuffeth up the wind; her lust—who can turn this away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month will they find her.
onagre habituée au désert, dans l’ardeur de sa passion, elle aspire l’air: qui l’empêchera de satisfaire son désir? Nul de ceux qui la recherchent n’a à se fatiguer; ils la trouvent en son mois.
25 “Prevent thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from being thirsty;” but thou saidst, It is useless; no, for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.
Prends garde que ton pied ne se trouve à nu, et que ton gosier ne se dessèche! Mais tu dis: « Inutile! Non, car j’aime les étrangers et j’irai après eux! »
26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so have the house of Israel been made ashamed, they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,
Comme un voleur pris sur le fait est couvert de honte, ainsi ont été confondus la maison d’Israël, eux, leurs rois, leurs chefs, leurs prêtres et leurs prophètes,
27 Who say to the wood, Thou art my father; and to the stone, Thou hast brought us forth; for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face; but in the time of their misfortune will they say, Arise, and save us.
qui disent au bois: « Tu es mon père, » et à la pierre: « Tu m’as mis au monde. » Car ils m’ont tourné le dos, et non la face, et au temps de leur malheur ils disent: « Lève-toi et sauve-nous! »
28 But where are then thy gods that thou hast made for thyself? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy misfortune; for equal to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah.
Où sont donc les dieux que tu t’es faits? Qu’ils se lèvent, s’ils peuvent te sauver au temps de ton malheur! Car aussi nombreux que tes villes sont tes dieux, ô Juda.
29 Wherefore will ye contend with me? all of you have transgressed against me, saith the Lord.
Pourquoi plaidez-vous contre moi? Vous m’avez tous été infidèles, — oracle de Yahweh.
30 To no purpose have I smitten your children; correction they accepted not: your sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
C’est en vain que j’ai frappé vos fils; ils n’en ont pas retiré d’instruction; votre épée a dévoré vos prophètes, comme un lion destructeur.
31 O [present] generation, regard ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of deep darkness? wherefore say my people, We wander about; we cannot come any more unto thee?
Quelle race vous êtes! Considérez la parole de Yahweh: Ai-je été pour Israël un désert, un pays d’épaisses ténèbres? Pourquoi mon peuple a-t-il dit: « Nous sommes libres, nous ne reviendrons pas à vous? »
32 Can a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride her decorations? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
Une vierge oublie-t-elle sa parure, une fiancée sa ceinture? Et mon peuple m’a oublié depuis des jours sans nombre!
33 Why ornamentest thou thy way to seek for love? truly even the worst hast thou used thyself as thy ways.
Que tu sais bien disposer tes voies pour chercher l’amour! Pour cela, même avec le crime tu familiarises tes voies!
34 Also on thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the innocent needy ones: not while breaking in [thy house] didst thou find them; but for all these things.
Jusque sur les pans de tes vêtements, on trouve le sang des pauvres innocents; tu ne les avais pas surpris en délit d’effraction, mais tu les as tués pour toutes ces choses.
35 Yet thou sayest, Yea, I am innocent, surely his anger is already turned away from me. Behold, I will hold judgment with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.
Et tu dis: « Oui, je suis innocente; certainement sa colère s’est détournée de moi. » Me voici pour te faire le procès sur ce que tu dis: « Je n’ai pas péché! »
36 Why makest thou thyself so very low to change thy way? also because of Egypt shalt thou be made ashamed, as thou wast put to shame because of Assyria.
Quelle hâte tu mets à changer ta voie! Tu seras rendue confuse par l’Égypte, comme tu l’as été par l’Assyrie.
37 Also from this one shalt thou go forth, with thy hands [clasped] over thy head; for the Lord hath rejected those on whom thou trustest and thou shalt not prosper with them.
De là aussi tu reviendras, les mains sur la tête; car Yahweh a rejeté ceux en qui tu mets ta confiance, et tu ne réussiras pas avec eux.
