Jeremiah 19
1 Thus said the Lord, Go and buy a bottle from a maker of earthenware, and [take] some of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests;
Ainsi a parlé Yahweh: Va, achète-toi une cruche de potier; prends avec toi des anciens du peuple et des anciens d’entre les prêtres.
2 And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Charsith, and proclaim there the words that I will speak unto thee.
Et sors vers la vallée de Ben-Hinnom, qui est à l’entrée de la porte de la Poterie, et là tu publieras les paroles que je te dirai.
3 And say, Hear ye the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring evil over this place, so that the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
Tu diras: Ecoutez la parole de Yahweh, rois de Juda et habitants de Jérusalem. Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Voici que je vais amener sur ce lieu un malheur, tel que les oreilles tinteront à qui en entendra parler;
4 For the reason that they have forsaken me, and have defiled this place, and have burnt incense in it unto other gods, which they had not known, either they or their fathers, or the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné, qu’ils ont aliéné ce lieu, qu’ils y ont offert de l’encens à des dieux étrangers que ne connaissaient ni eux, ni leurs pères ni les rois de Juda, et qu’ils ont rempli ce lieu du sang des innocents.
5 And they have built the high-places of Ba'al, to burn their sons with fire as burnt-offerings unto Ba'al, which I had not commanded, nor spoken, and which had not come into my mind:
Ils ont bâti les hauts lieux de Baal, pour consumer leurs enfants par le feu en holocauste à Baal, choses que je n’avais ni commandées, ni dites, et qui n’étaient pas montées à mon cœur.
6 Therefore, behold, days are coming, saith the Lord, that this place shall no more be called The Thopheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but, The valley of slaughter.
C’est pourquoi voici que des jours viennent, — oracle de Yahweh, où ce lieu ne sera plus appelé Topheth ni vallée de Ben-Hinnom, mais vallée du massacre.
7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those that seek their life: and I will give their carcasses as food unto the fowls of the heaven, and unto the beasts of the earth.
Je rendrai vain dans ce lieu le conseil de Juda et de Jérusalem; je les ferai tomber par l’épée devant leurs ennemis et par la main de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie; et je donnerai leurs cadavres en pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre.
8 And I will render this city desolate, and an [object of] derision: every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.
Et je ferai de cette ville un objet de stupeur et de risée; quiconque passera près d’elle sera stupéfait et rira de toutes ses meurtrissures.
9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his associate, in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and those that seek their life, shall distress them.
Je leur ferai manger la chair de leurs fils et la chair de leurs filles; ils mangeront la chair les uns des autres, dans l’angoisse et la détresse où les réduiront leurs ennemis, et ceux qui en veulent à leur vie.
10 Then shalt thou break the bottle before the eyes of the men that are going with thee.
Tu briseras ensuite la cruche sous les yeux des hommes venus avec toi,
11 And thou shalt say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, In this manner will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be restored again; and in Thopheth shall they bury, for want of room to bury.
et tu leur diras: Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées: Je briserai ce peuple et cette ville, comme on brise le vase du potier, qui ne peut plus être réparé, et l’on enterrera à Topheth, faute de place pour enterrer.
12 Thus will I do unto this place, saith the Lord, and to its inhabitants, and to make this city as Thopheth:
Voilà ce que je ferai à ce lieu, — oracle de Yahweh, — et à ses habitants, en rendant cette ville semblable à Topheth.
13 And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are unclean, shall become as the place of the Thopheth, with all the houses upon the roofs of which they have burnt incense to all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink-offerings to other gods.
Les maisons de Jérusalem et les maisons des rois de Juda seront telles que ce lieu de Topheth, souillées: toutes les maisons sur les toits desquelles on a offert de l’encens à toute l’armée des cieux et versé des libations à des dieux étrangers.
14 Then came Jeremiah from the Thopheth, whither the Lord had sent him to prophesy; and he placed himself in the court of the house of the Lord; and said to all the people,
Jérémie revint de Topheth où Yahweh l’avait envoyé prophétiser, et, se tenant dans le parvis de la maison de Yahweh, il dit à tout le peuple:
15 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all its towns all the evil that I have spoken against it; because they have hardened their neck, so as not to hear my words.
« Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, le Dieu d’Israël: Voici que je vais faire venir sur cette ville et sur toutes les villes de son ressort tous les malheurs que j’ai annoncés contre elle, parce qu’ils ont raidi leur cou pour ne pas obéir à mes paroles. »
