Jeremiah 18
1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
A palavra do Senhor, que veiu a Jeremias, dizendo:
2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there will I let thee hear my words.
Levanta-te, e desce á casa do oleiro, e lá te farei ouvir as minhas palavras.
3 Then went I down to the potter's house, and, behold, he was doing work on the wheels.
E desci á casa do oleiro, e eis que estava fazendo a sua obra sobre as rodas.
4 And the vessel that he was making became spoiled as [happeneth] with the clay in the hand of the potter; and he made again thereof another vessel, as it seemed good in the eyes of the potter to make it.
E o vaso, que elle fazia de barro, quebrou-se na mão do oleiro: então tornou a fazer d'elle outro vaso, conforme o que pareceu bem aos olhos do oleiro fazer.
5 Then came the word of the Lord to me, saying,
Então veiu a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:
6 Shall I not be able to do unto you as this potter, O house of Israel? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.
Porventura não poderei eu fazer de vós como este oleiro, ó casa d'Israel? diz o Senhor: eis que, como o barro na mão do oleiro, assim sois vós na minha mão, ó casa d'Israel.
7 At one instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
No momento em que fallarei contra uma nação, e contra um reino para arrancar, e para derribar, e para destruir,
8 But should that nation, against whom I have spoken, return from their wrong-doing: then will I bethink me of the evil that I had thought to do unto them.
Se a tal nação, porém, contra a qual fallar se converter da sua maldade, tambem eu me arrependerei do mal que lhe cuidava fazer.
9 And at one instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
No momento em que fallarei de uma gente e de um reino, para edificar e para plantar,
10 But should it do what is evil in my eyes, so as not to hearken to my voice: then will I bethink me of the good, wherewith I had thought to benefit the same.
Se fizer o mal diante dos meus olhos, não dando ouvidos á minha voz, então me arrependerei do bem que tinha dito lhe faria.
11 And now do say to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, as followeth, Thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I form against you evil, and devise against you a device: do but return now every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.
Ora pois, falla agora aos homens de Judah, e aos moradores de Jerusalem, dizendo: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que estou forjando mal contra vós: e penso um pensamento contra vós: convertei-vos pois agora cada um do seu mau caminho, e melhorae os vossos caminhos e as vossas acções.
12 And they said, It is useless: for after our own thoughts will we walk, and we will every one do after the stubbornness of his evil heart.
Porém elles dizem: Não ha esperança, porque após as nossas imaginações andaremos: e faremos cada um o proposito do seu malvado coração.
13 Therefore thus hath said the Lord, Only ask among the nations, Who hath heard the like things? a very horrible act hath the virgin of Israel committed.
Portanto assim diz o Senhor: Perguntae agora entre os gentios quem ouviu tal coisa? coisa mui horrenda fez a virgem de Israel.
14 Doth the snow of Lebanon ever quit the rock of the field? or do the far-coming, cold, flowing waters ever fail?
Porventura deixar-se-ha a neve do Libano por uma rocha do campo? ou deixar-se-hão as aguas estranhas, frias e correntes?
15 That my people have forgotten me, that they have burnt incense to false gods, and are made to stumble on their ways, the ancient beaten tracks, to walk in paths, on a road which is not leveled?
Comtudo o meu povo se tem esquecido de mim, queimando incenso á vaidade; porque os fizeram tropeçar nos seus caminhos, e nas veredas antigas, para que andassem por veredas afastadas, não aplainadas;
16 To make their land desolate, a perpetual derision: every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head.
Para pôr a sua terra em espanto e perpetuos assobios; todo aquelle que passa por ella se espantará, e meneará a sua cabeça.
17 Like an east wind will I scatter them before the enemy; with the back, and not the face, will I regard them on the day of their calamity.
Como com vento oriental os espalharei diante da face do inimigo: mostrar-lhes-hei as costas e não o rosto, no dia da sua perdição.
18 And they said, Come, and let us contrive devices against Jeremiah; for the law will not be lost from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not listen to any of his words.
Então disseram: Vinde, e maquinemos maquinações contra Jeremias; porque não perecerá a lei do sacerdote, nem o conselho do sabio, nem a palavra do propheta: vinde, e firamol-o com a lingua, e não escutemos a nenhuma das suas palavras.
19 Listen to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of those that contend with me.
Olha para mim, Senhor, e ouve a voz dos que contendem comigo.
20 Shall evil be recompensed instead of good, that they have dug a pit for my life? Remember my standing before thee to speak good concerning them, to cause thy wrath to turn away from them.
Porventura pagar-se-ha mal por bem? porque cavaram uma cova para a minha alma: lembra-te de que eu me apresentei na tua presença, para fallar por seu bem, para desviar d'elles a tua indignação.
21 Therefore give up their children to the famine, and let their life ebb out by means of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and widows; and let their men be slain by death; their young men smitten by the sword in the battle.
Portanto entrega seus filhos á fome, e entrega-os ao poder da espada, e sejam suas mulheres roubadas dos filhos, e viuvas; e seus maridos sejam mortos de morte, e os seus mancebos sejam feridos á espada na peleja.
22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou bringest a troop over them suddenly; for they have dug a pit to catch me, and laid concealed snares for my feet.
Ouça-se o clamor de suas casas, quando trouxeres esquadrões sobre elles de repente. Porquanto cavaram uma cova para prender-me e armaram laços aos meus pés.
23 Yet thou, Lord, knowest well all their counsel against me to [procure my] death: forgive not their iniquity, and let their sin not be blotted out from before thee; but let them be brought to stumbling before thee; in the time of thy anger deal thus with them.
Mas tu, ó Senhor, sabes todo o seu conselho contra mim para matar-me; não perdoes a sua maldade, nem apagues o seu peccado de diante da tua face: mas tropecem perante a tua face; assim usa com elles no tempo da tua ira.
