Jeremiah 18
1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
| خداوند به من فرمود: «برخیز و به کارگاه کوزه‌گری برو، و من در آنجا با تو سخن خواهم گفت.» |
2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there will I let thee hear my words.
3 Then went I down to the potter's house, and, behold, he was doing work on the wheels.
| برخاستم و به کارگاه کوزه‌گری رفتم. دیدم که کوزه‌گر بر سر چرخش سرگرم کار است؛ |
4 And the vessel that he was making became spoiled as [happeneth] with the clay in the hand of the potter; and he made again thereof another vessel, as it seemed good in the eyes of the potter to make it.
| ولی کوزه‌ای که مشغول ساختنش بود، به شکل دلخواهش در نیامد؛ پس آن را دوباره خمیر کرد و بر چرخ گذاشت تا کوزه‌ای دیگر مطابق میلش بسازد. |
5 Then came the word of the Lord to me, saying,
| آنگاه خداوند فرمود: |
6 Shall I not be able to do unto you as this potter, O house of Israel? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.
| «ای بنی‌اسرائیل، آیا من نمی‌توانم با شما همان‌گونه رفتار کنم که این کوزه‌گر با گلش کرد؟ شما هم در دستهای من، همچون گل در دست کوزه‌گر هستید. |
7 At one instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
| هرگاه اعلام نمایم که قصد دارم قومی یا مملکتی را منهدم و ویران سازم، |
8 But should that nation, against whom I have spoken, return from their wrong-doing: then will I bethink me of the evil that I had thought to do unto them.
| اگر آن قوم از شرارت دست کشند و توبه کنند، از قصد خود منصرف می‌شوم و نابودشان نخواهم کرد. |
9 And at one instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
| و اگر اعلام کنم که می‌خواهم قومی یا مملکتی را قدرتمند و بزرگ سازم، |
10 But should it do what is evil in my eyes, so as not to hearken to my voice: then will I bethink me of the good, wherewith I had thought to benefit the same.
| اما آن قوم راه و روش خود را تغییر داده، به دنبال شرارت بروند و احکام مرا اطاعت نکنند، آنگاه من نیز نیکویی و برکتی را که در نظر داشتم، به آن قوم نخواهم داد. |
11 And now do say to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, as followeth, Thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I form against you evil, and devise against you a device: do but return now every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.
| «حال برو و به تمام ساکنان یهودا و اورشلیم هشدار بده و بگو که من علیه ایشان بلایی تدارک می‌بینم؛ پس بهتر است از راههای زشتشان بازگردند و کردار خود را اصلاح کنند. |
12 And they said, It is useless: for after our own thoughts will we walk, and we will every one do after the stubbornness of his evil heart.
| «اما ایشان جواب خواهند داد:”بیهوده خود را زحمت مده! ما هر طور که دلمان می‌خواهد زندگی خواهیم کرد و امیال سرکش خود را دنبال خواهیم نمود!“» |
13 Therefore thus hath said the Lord, Only ask among the nations, Who hath heard the like things? a very horrible act hath the virgin of Israel committed.
| خداوند می‌فرماید: «حتی در میان بت‌پرستان تاکنون چنین چیزی رخ نداده است! قوم من عمل زشتی مرتکب شده که تصورش را هم نمی‌توان کرد! |
14 Doth the snow of Lebanon ever quit the rock of the field? or do the far-coming, cold, flowing waters ever fail?
| قله‌های بلند کوههای لبنان هرگز بدون برف نمی‌مانند؛ جویبارهای خنک نیز که از دور دستها جاری‌اند، هرگز خشک نمی‌شوند. |
15 That my people have forgotten me, that they have burnt incense to false gods, and are made to stumble on their ways, the ancient beaten tracks, to walk in paths, on a road which is not leveled?
| به پایداری اینها می‌توان اعتماد کرد، اما به قوم من اعتمادی نیست! زیرا آنها مرا ترک نموده و به بتها روی آورده‌اند؛ از راههای هموار قدیم بازگشته‌اند و در بی‌راهه‌های گناه قدم می‌زنند. |
16 To make their land desolate, a perpetual derision: every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head.
| از این رو سرزمینشان چنان ویران خواهد شد که هر کس از آن عبور کند، حیرت نماید و از تعجب سر خود را تکان دهد. |
17 Like an east wind will I scatter them before the enemy; with the back, and not the face, will I regard them on the day of their calamity.
| همان‌طور که باد شرقی خاک را پراکنده می‌کند، من هم قوم خود را به هنگام رویارویی با دشمنانشان پراکنده خواهم ساخت؛ و به هنگام مصیبت رویم را برگردانده به ایشان اعتنایی نخواهم نمود!» |
18 And they said, Come, and let us contrive devices against Jeremiah; for the law will not be lost from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not listen to any of his words.
| آنگاه قوم گفتند: «بیایید خود را از شر ارمیا خلاص کنیم! ما خود کاهنانی داریم که شریعت را به ما تعلیم می‌دهند و حکیمانی داریم که ما را راهنمایی می‌نمایند و انبیایی داریم که پیام خدا را به ما اعلام می‌کنند؛ دیگر چه احتیاجی به موعظهٔ ارمیا داریم؟ پس بیایید به سخنانش گوش فرا ندهیم و تهمتی بر او وارد سازیم تا دیگر بر ضد ما سخن نگوید!» |
19 Listen to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of those that contend with me.
| بنابراین ارمیا دعا کرده، گفت: «خداوندا، به سخنانم توجه نما! ببین دربارهٔ من چه می‌گویند. |
20 Shall evil be recompensed instead of good, that they have dug a pit for my life? Remember my standing before thee to speak good concerning them, to cause thy wrath to turn away from them.
| آیا باید خوبی‌های مرا با بدی تلافی کنند؟ برای کشتن من دام گذاشته‌اند حال آنکه من بارها نزد تو از ایشان طرفداری کرده و کوشیده‌ام خشم تو را از ایشان برگردانم. |
21 Therefore give up their children to the famine, and let their life ebb out by means of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and widows; and let their men be slain by death; their young men smitten by the sword in the battle.
| اما حال خداوندا، بگذار فرزندانشان از گرسنگی بمیرند و شمشیر خون آنها را بریزد؛ زنانشان بیوه بشوند و مادرانشان داغدیده! مردها از بیماری بمیرند و جوانان در جنگ کشته شوند! |
22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou bringest a troop over them suddenly; for they have dug a pit to catch me, and laid concealed snares for my feet.
| بگذار وقتی سربازان به ناگه بر آنها هجوم می‌آورند، فریاد و شیون از خانه‌هایشان برخیزد! زیرا بر سر راهم دام گسترده‌اند و برایم چاه کنده‌اند. |
23 Yet thou, Lord, knowest well all their counsel against me to [procure my] death: forgive not their iniquity, and let their sin not be blotted out from before thee; but let them be brought to stumbling before thee; in the time of thy anger deal thus with them.
| خداوندا، تو از تمام توطئه‌های ایشان برای کشتن من آگاهی؛ پس آنها را نبخش و گناهشان را از نظرت دور مدار؛ ایشان را به هنگام خشم و غضب خود، داوری فرما و در حضور خود هلاک نما!» |
