Jeremiah 17
1 The sin of Judah is written down with a pen of iron, with the point of a diamond: it is engraved upon the table of their heart, and on the horns of your altars.
2 Like their remembrance of their children, so are [to them] their altars and their groves by [every] green tree upon the high hills.
3 O my mountain in the field, thy substance, all thy treasures will I give up for spoil, thy high-places [reared] with sin, throughout all thy borders.
4 And thou shalt be cast out, yea through thy own guilt, from thy heritage which I have given thee; and I will cause thee to serve thy enemies in a land which thou knowest not; for a fire have ye kindled in my anger, for ever shall it burn.
5 Thus hath said the Lord, Cursed is the man that trusteth in man, and placeth on flesh his dependence, while from the Lord his heart departeth.
Maudit l'homme qui a mis en l'homme son espérance, et appuie sur lui la chair de son bras, quand son cœur s'est éloigné de Dieu.
6 And he shall be like a lonely tree in the desert, which feeleth not when the good cometh; but abideth in the parched places in the wilderness, in a salty land which cannot be inhabited.
Il sera comme la bruyère dans le désert; il ne verra pas le bien lui venir; il demeurera dans un désert de sel, dans une terre saumâtre et inhabitable.
7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and the Lord will be his trust.
Béni l'homme qui a mis sa confiance dans le Seigneur, le Seigneur sera son espoir.
8 And he shall be like a tree that is planted by the waters, and by a stream spreadeth out its roots, which feeleth not when heat cometh, but its leaf remaineth green; and in a year of drought it is undisturbed by care, and ceaseth not from yielding fruit.
Il sera comme un arbre croissant au bord des eaux; il enfoncera ses racines dans un terrain humide; il ne craindra rien quand viendra l'ardente chaleur; ses branches touffues l'ombrageront; il ne craindra rien en une année de sécheresse, et il ne cessera de porter des fruits.
9 Deceitful is the heart above all things, and sick: who can know it?
Le cœur est profond plus que toute chose, et le cœur, c'est l'homme. Qui le connaîtra?
10 I the Lord search the heart, probe the reins: yea, to give unto every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.
Moi, le Seigneur, qui sonde les cœurs, et qui éprouve les reins pour rétribuer chacun selon ses voies et selon les fruits de ses travaux.
11 As a cuckoo that sitteth on eggs which he hath not laid, so is he that get the riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days shall he leave them, and at his end shall be called wicked.
La perdrix a crié, elle rassemble les perdreaux qu'elle n'a point produits; tel est l'homme acquérant sa richesse injustement: au milieu de ses jours ses biens l'abandonneront, et à sa dernière heure il sera insensé.
12 A throne of glory, exalted from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary!
Pour nous, un trône de gloire élevé est notre sanctuaire.
13 Hope of Israel, O Lord, all that forsake thee shall be made ashamed, and the backsliders among me shall be written down on the earth; because they have forsaken the fountain of living waters, the Lord.
Vous êtes l'attente d'Israël, Seigneur; que tous ceux qui vous ont abandonné soient confondus; que les rebelles soient inscrits sur la terre, parce qu'ils ont abandonné la fontaine de vie, qui est le Seigneur.
14 Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed: save me, and I shall be saved; for my praise art thou.
Guérissez-moi, Seigneur, et je serai guéri; sauvez-moi, et je serai sauvé, parce que vous êtes l'objet de ma gloire.
15 Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the Lord? let it come now.
Voilà qu'ils me disent: Où est la parole du Seigneur? Qu'elle vienne!
16 As for me, I have not hastened to be a shepherd to follow thee; and the woeful day have I not longed for; thou knowest it: what came out of my lips was known before thee.
Pour moi, je ne me suis point lassé de vous suivre, et je n'ai point désiré le jour de l'homme; vous le savez, ce qui sort de mes lèvres est devant vous.
17 Be not a terror unto me: thou art my protection on the day of evil.
Ne soyez point pour moi un étranger; épargnez-moi quand viendra le jour mauvais.
18 Let those be made ashamed that persecute me, but let not me be made ashamed: let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and strike them with a double breach.
Qu'ils soient confondus ceux qui me persécutent, et que je ne sois pas confondu; qu'ils soient alarmés, et que je n'aie point d'alarmes; faites venir sur eux les jours mauvais; affligez-moi d'une double affliction.
19 Thus said the Lord unto me, Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah usually enter, and by which they usually go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Va, et tiens-toi sur les portes des enfants de ton peuple, celles par où entrent les rois de Juda, et par où ils sortent, sur toutes les portes de Jérusalem,
20 And say unto them, Hear ye the word of the Lord, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates.
Et dis-leur: Écoutez la parole du Seigneur, rois de Juda, peuple de la Judée, peuple de Jérusalem, vous tous qui entrez par ces portes;
21 Thus hath said the Lord, Take heed for your souls, and bear no burden on the sabbath-day, nor bring it in through the gates of Jerusalem;
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Veillez sur vos âmes, ne portez point de fardeaux les jours de sabbat, et ne sortez point des portes de Jérusalem.
22 Nor shall you carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath-day, and no manner of work shall ye do, but hallow ye the sabbath-day, as I have commanded your fathers;
N'emportez point de fardeaux hors de vos maisons les jours de sabbat, et ne faites aucune œuvre; sanctifiez le jour du sabbat, comme je l'ai commandé à vos pères:
23 But they hearkened not, and inclined not their ear; and they made their neck stiff, so as not to hearken, and not to receive instruction.
Et ils n'ont point écouté, et ils ont détourné l'oreille, et ils ont endurci leur tête plus que leurs pères, pour ne point m'obéir et ne point recevoir d'avertissement.
24 And it shall come to pass, if ye will diligently hearken unto me, saith the Lord, so as to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath-day, and to hallow the sabbath-day, so as to do no work thereon:
Or ceci arrivera: Si vous êtes dociles, dit le Seigneur, à mon commandement; si vous ne transportez pas de fardeaux par les portes de la ville les jours de sabbat, et si vous sanctifiez les jours de sabbat, en ne faisant aucune œuvre,
25 Then shall there enter through the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall be inhabited for ever.
Les rois et les princes assis sur le trône de David, ceux qui montent sur des chars traînés par leurs chevaux, eux et leurs princes, les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem, entreront par les portes de cette ville, et elle sera habitée dans tous les siècles.
26 And there shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the environs of Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the lowlands, and from the mountain, and from the south, those that bring burnt-offerings, and sacrifices, and meat-offerings, and frankincense, and those that bring thanksgiving-offerings, unto the house of the Lord.
Et l'on y viendra des villes de Juda qui entourent Jérusalem, et de la terre de Benjamin, et de la plaine et des montagnes, et des régions du midi, pour apporter des holocaustes et des victimes, des parfums, de la manne et de l'encens, et pour offrir des louanges au Seigneur en son temple,
27 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath-day, and not to bear a burden, and to enter in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath-day: then will I kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.
Et ceci arrivera, si vous êtes indociles à mon commandement de sanctifier les jours de sabbat, de ne point porter de fardeaux et de n'en point faire entrer par les portes de Jérusalem les jours de sabbat: j'allumerai à ces portes un feu qui dévorera les rues de Jérusalem, et ne sera pas éteint.
