Jeremiah 14
1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought.
Voici en quels termes la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Jérémie au sujet de la sécheresse:
2 Judah mourneth, and her gates languish; they lie grieved on the ground; and the distressed cry of Jerusalem ascendeth upward.
Juda est en deuil, ceux que renferment ses portes sont consternés, tristement assis à terre, et ce sont des cris plaintifs qui s’élèvent de Jérusalem.
3 And their nobles have sent out their subordinates for water: they come to the pits, they find no water; they return with their vessels empty; they are ashamed and confounded, and cover their head.
Leurs chefs envoient les subalternes chercher de l’eau; ceux-ci arrivent aux citernes, et n’y trouvent pas d’eau; ils reviennent sur leurs pas avec leurs vases vides, pleins de confusion, tout honteux et la tête voilée.
4 Because of the ground which is cracked open, since there hath been no rain in the land, are the ploughmen ashamed, they cover their head.
C’Est que le sol est crevassé, nulle pluie n’étant tombée dans le pays; les laboureurs sont cruellement déçus et se couvrent la tête d’un voile.
5 Yea, the hind also bringeth forth her young in the field, and forsaketh [them], because there is no grass.
Oui, jusqu’à la biche dans les champs qui, après avoir mis bas, abandonne son petit; car il n’y a pas de verdure.
6 And the wild asses stand on the mountain-tops, they snuff up the wind like serpents: their eyes fail, because there are no herbs.
Les onagres s’arrêtent sur les hauteurs dénudées, aspirant l’air comme les monstres marins: leurs yeux se consument, car il n’y a pas d’herbe.
7 If our iniquities testify against us, O Lord, do thou act for the sake of thy name; for our backslidings are many; against thee have we sinned.
Si nos fautes nous accusent, ô Eternel, agis pour l’honneur de ton nom, quoique nombreuses soient nos défections et nos prévarications envers toi.
8 O thou hope of Israel, his saviour in time of trouble, why shouldst thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfarer that turneth aside to lodge for a night?
Espoir d’Israël, son sauveur au temps de la détresse, pourquoi serais-tu comme un étranger dans le pays, comme un voyageur qui dresse sa tente pour une nuit?
9 Why shouldst thou be as a man that is surprised, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou art in the midst of us, O Lord, and we are called by thy name: abandon us not.
Pourquoi serais-tu comme un homme déconcerté, comme un guerrier impuissant à secourir? Tu es pourtant au milieu de nous, ô Eternel, ton nom est associé au nôtre, tu ne peux nous abandonner.
10 Thus hath said the Lord unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander about, their feet have they not restrained: therefore the Lord doth not receive them in favor; now will he remember their iniquity, and will punish their sins.
Ainsi parle l’Eternel au sujet de ce peuple: "En vérité, il leur plaisait d’aller de côté et d’autre, sans ménager leurs pas; mais Dieu ne les a pas vus avec plaisir. A présent il se souvient de leurs fautes, il leur demande compte de leurs péchés."
11 Then said the Lord unto me, Pray not in behalf of this people for their good.
L’Eternel me dit encore: "Ne prie pas pour ce peuple, pour son bonheur.
12 When they fast, I will not hear their entreaty: and when they offer burnt-offering and meat-offering, I will not receive them in favor; but by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence, will I make an end of them.
S’Il jeûne, je resterai sourd à ses supplications; s’il m’offre des holocaustes et des oblations, je ne leur ferai pas bon accueil. Bien plus, par le glaive, par la famine et la peste, je vais le faire périr."
13 Then said I, Ah, Lord Eternal! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but a permanent peace will I give you in this place.
Je m’écriai: "Eh quoi! ô Eternel, Dieu, mais des prophètes leur disent: Vous ne verrez pas de glaive, la famine ne sévira point parmi vous; c’est, au contraire, une paix durable que je vous octroie en ces lieux!"
14 Then said the Lord unto me, Falsehood do the prophets prophesy in my name; I have not sent them, neither have I commanded them, neither have I spoken unto them: a vision of falsehood, and divination, and idolatrous folly, and the deceit of their heart do they prophesy unto you.
L’Eternel me répondit: "Ce sont des mensonges que ces prophètes prophétisent en mon nom! Je ne les ai point envoyés, je ne les ai chargés d’aucune mission, ni ne leur ai parlé: ce sont des visions imaginaires, des prédictions vaines, des tromperies forgées par leur coeur qu’ils vous prophétisent."
15 Therefore thus hath said the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, when I have not sent them, while they say, Sword and famine shall not come in this land: By the sword and by the famine shall these prophets come to their end.
C’Est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Eternel: "Pour ce qui est des prophètes qui prophétisent en mon nom, alors que je ne les ai point envoyés, et qui disent que ni glaive ni famine ne séviront en ce pays, eh bien! Par le glaive et la famine ils périront, ces prophètes!
16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall lie cast down in the streets of Jerusalem by means of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, and their sons, and their daughters; for I will pour out their wickedness over them.
Et ce peuple auquel s’adressent leurs prophéties, il jonchera les rues de Jérusalem, victime du glaive et de la famine; personne ne les ensevelira, ceux-là, ni eux, ni leurs femmes, ni leurs fils, ni leurs filles; je ferai retomber sur eux leur impiété.
17 But thou shalt say unto them this word. My eyes shall run down with tears night and day, and they shall not cease; for with a great breach is the virgin-daughter of my people broken, with a very painful blow.
Et toi, tu leur adresseras cette parole: Nuit et jour mes yeux fondent en Larmes, sans discontinuer, car la vierge, fille de mon peuple, est atteinte d’une terrible catastrophe, d’une blessure douloureuse à l’extrême.
18 If I go forth into the field, behold, there are the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, behold, there are those that are sick with famine! for both the prophet and the priest travel round into a land that they know not.
Si je sors dans les champs, voilà ceux qui sont tombés victimes du glaive; si j’entre dans la ville, voici ceux que torture la faim; oui, tant prophètes que prêtres, ils errent sans but dans le pays."
19 Hast thou entirely rejected Judah? or hath thy soul loathing on Zion? why hast thou smitten us, so that there is no healing for us? we hoped for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold, there is terror!
As-tu donc complètement repoussé Juda? Ton âme a-t-elle pris Sion en dégoût? Pourquoi nous infliges-tu des blessures auxquelles il n’est point de remède? On espérait la paix et rien d’heureux ne nous arrive, une ère de réparation et voici l’épouvante!
20 We know, O Lord, our wickedness, the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against thee.
Nous reconnaissons, ô Seigneur, notre culpabilité, la faute de nos ancêtres; assurément, nous avons péché contre toi.
21 Do not cast us off, for the sake of thy name, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
Pour l’honneur de ton nom ne livre pas au mépris, n’avilis point ton trône glorieux; souviens-toi, ne romps pas ton alliance avec nous.
22 Are there any among the vanities of the nations those that bestow rain? or can the heavens give forth showers? Behold, thou art this, O Lord our God, and we will hope in thee; for thou hast done all these things.
En est-il parmi les vaines divinités des nations qui répandent la pluie? Ou bien est-ce le ciel qui dispense les ondées? N’Est-ce point toi, ô Eternel, notre Dieu, toi en qui nous mettons notre espoir? Oui, toi, tu accomplis tous ces prodiges.
