Jeremiah 13
1 Thus said the Lord unto me, Go and buy thee a linen girdle, and put it around thy loins, and lay it not in water.
Ainsi me parla l'Éternel: Va, et t'achète une ceinture de lin, et applique-la à tes reins, mais ne la mets pas dans l'eau.
2 So I bought the girdle, according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my loins.
Et j'achetai la ceinture conformément à la parole de l'Éternel, et je l'appliquai à mes reins.
3 And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying,
Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée pour la seconde fois, en ces mots:
4 Take the girdle that thou hast bought, which is around thy loins; and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.
Prends la ceinture que tu as achetée, et qui est autour de tes reins, et lève-toi, va vers l'Euphrate, et là, cache-la dans une fente de rocher.
5 So I went, and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord has commanded me.
Et j'allai, et je la cachai près de l'Euphrate, comme me l'ordonnait l'Éternel.
6 And it came to pass at the end of many days, that the Lord said unto me, Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the girdle, which I commanded thee to hide there.
Et au bout de plusieurs jours, l'Éternel me dit: Lève-toi, va vers l'Euphrate, et prends-y la ceinture que je t'ai ordonné d'y cacher.
7 And I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and took the girdle from the place where I had hidden it: and, behold, the girdle was spoiled, it was useful for nothing.
Et j'allai vers l'Euphrate, et je creusai, et je pris la ceinture de l'endroit où je l'avais cachée; et voici, la ceinture était gâtée, et elle n'était plus bonne à rien.
8 Then came the word of the Lord unto me, saying,
Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots:
9 Thus hath said the Lord, After this manner will I destroy the pride of Judah, and the pride of Jerusalem, which is great.
Ainsi parle l'Éternel: C'est ainsi que je détruirai la magnificence de Juda, et la magnificence de Jérusalem, la grande.
10 And this bad people, who refuse to hearken to my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and have followed other gods, to serve them, and to bow down to them, shall even be as this girdle which is useful for nothing.
Ce peuple méchant, qui refuse d'écouter mes paroles, qui suit l'obstination de son cœur, et qui court après d'autres dieux, pour les servir et les adorer, il sera comme cette ceinture qui n'est plus bonne à rien.
11 For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so had I caused to cleave unto me all the house of Israel and all the house of Judah, saith the Lord, —to become unto me a people, and [to be] for a name, and for praise, and for honor; but they would not hear.
Car de même que la ceinture est attachée aux reins d'un homme, ainsi je m'étais attaché toute la maison d'Israël et toute la maison de Juda, dit l'Éternel, pour qu'elles fussent mon peuple, et ma renommée, et ma gloire, et mon honneur; mais ils n'ont pas obéi.
12 Therefore shalt thou say unto them this word, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and when they will say unto thee, Do we not know full well that every bottle shall be filled with wine?
Et tu leur diras cette parole: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Toutes les cruches seront remplies de vin. Mais ils te diront: Ne savons-nous pas que toutes les cruches se remplissent de vin?
13 Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit after David upon his throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.
Dis-leur alors: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je remplirai tous les habitants de ce pays, et les rois assis sur le trône de David, et les sacrificateurs, et les prophètes, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem, d'enivrement.
14 And I will dash them one against the other, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, so as not to destroy them.
Et je les briserai les uns contre les autres, pères et fils ensemble, dit l'Éternel; je n'ai ni miséricorde, ni compassion, ni pitié qui m'empêche de les mettre en pièces.
15 Hear ye, and bend your ear: be not proud; for the Lord hath spoken.
Écoutez et prêtez l'oreille! dépouillez tout orgueil! car l'Éternel parle.
16 Give unto the Lord your God glory, before he cause darkness, and before your feet strike upon the mountains of twilight, and [where], while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and change it into gross darkness.
Rendez gloire à l'Éternel, votre Dieu, avant qu'il envoie les ténèbres, et avant que vos pieds heurtent contre les montagnes de la nuit, et qu'il change la lumière que vous attendez en une ombre de mort, et en une morne obscurité.
17 But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places because of [your] pride; and my eye shall weep sorely, and run down with tears, because the flock of the Lord is driven away captive.
Et si vous n'écoutez pas, alors dans le secret je déplorerai votre orgueil, mes yeux pleureront et répandront des larmes, parce que le troupeau de l'Éternel s'en ira captif.
18 Say unto the king and to the queen-mother, Sit down very lowly; for sunk down are your head-attires, the crown of your ornament.
Dis au roi et à la reine: Humiliez-vous! asseyez-vous! car de votre tête tombe votre couronne de majesté.
19 The cities of the south are shut up, and there is no one to open them: Judah is carried away into exile altogether, it is carried into exile completely.
Les villes du Midi sont fermées, et personne ne les ouvre; tout Juda est déporté, déporté en totalité.
20 Lift up your eyes, and see those that are coming from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy splendid flock?
Lève tes yeux, et vois ceux qui viennent du Nord! Où est le troupeau qui te fut donné, le troupeau qui était ta gloire?
21 What wilt thou say when he will punish thee? since thou hast accustomed them to be over thee captains, and chiefs? shall not pangs seize upon thee, as on a woman in travail?
Que diras-tu, s'il établit sur toi comme chefs ceux que tu habituas toi-même à te maîtriser? Les douleurs ne te saisiront-elles pas, comme la femme qui enfante?
22 And if thou wilt say in thy heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thy iniquity are thy skirts laid open, thy heels are made bare violently.
Et si tu dis en ton cœur: « Pourquoi m'arrivent ces choses? » C'est pour le nombre de tes iniquités que tes pans ont été retroussés, et tes talons déshonorés.
23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? [then] may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
Un More changerait-il sa peau, et un léopard ses taches? Vous aussi, pourriez-vous faire le bien, étant habitués à faire le mal?
24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away before the wind of the wilderness.
Mais je les disséminerai comme la balle emportée au vent du désert.
25 This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the Lord; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.
Tel sera ton lot, ta portion mesurée de par moi, dit l'Éternel, parce que tu m'as oublié, et que tu as placé ta confiance dans le mensonge;
26 Therefore do I also strip up thy skirts over thy face, that thy shame may be seen.
moi aussi je veux relever tes pans jusque sur ton visage, et l'on verra ta honte.
27 Thy adulteries and thy loud shoutings, the lewdness of thy incest, thy abominations on the hills in the fields have I seen. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! thou wilt not be made clean after ever so long a time.
Tes adultères et tes hennissements, tes criminelles prostitutions sur les collines dans les campagnes… j'ai vu tes infamies. Malheur à toi, Jérusalem, tu ne seras pas pure pendant combien de temps encore!
