Isaiah 37
1 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.
Et il arriva qu'aussitôt que le Roi Ezéchias eut entendu ces choses, il déchira ses vêtements, et se couvrit d'un sac; et entra dans la maison de l'Eternel.
2 And he sent Elyakim, who was superintendent over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the son of Amoz, the prophet.
Puis il envoya Eliakim Maître d'hôtel, et Sebna le Secrétaire, et les anciens d'entre les Sacrificateurs, couverts de sacs, vers Esaïe le Prophète fils d'Amots.
3 And they said unto him, Thus hath said Hezekiah, A day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of derision is this day; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
Et ils lui dirent; ainsi a dit Ezéchias; ce jour-ci est le jour d'angoisse, et de répréhension, et de blasphème; car les enfants sont venus jusqu'à l'ouverture de la matrice, mais il n'y a point de force pour enfanter.
4 Perhaps the Lord thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to blaspheme the living God, and who hath reproached with the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up a prayer for the remnant that is still found here.
Peut-être que l'Eternel ton Dieu aura entendu les paroles de Rabsaké, lequel le Roi des Assyriens son maître a envoyé pour blasphémer le Dieu vivant, et lui faire outrage, selon les paroles que l'Eternel ton Dieu a ouïes; fais donc requête pour le reste qui se trouve encore.
5 And the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
Les serviteurs donc du Roi Ezéchias vinrent vers Esaïe.
6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus hath said the Lord, Be not afraid because of the words which thou hast heard, with which the boys of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
Et Esaïe leur dit; vous direz ainsi à votre maître; ainsi a dit l'Eternel; ne crains point pour les paroles que tu as entendues, par lesquelles les serviteurs du Roi des Assyriens m'ont blasphémé.
7 Behold, I will put an [other] spirit in him, and when he will hear a rumor, he shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
Voici, je m'en vais mettre en lui un tel esprit, qu'ayant entendu un certain bruit, il retournera en son pays, et je le ferai tomber par l'épée dans son pays.
8 And Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
Or quand Rabsaké s'en fut retourné, il alla trouver le Roi des Assyriens, qui battait Libna; car [Rabsaké] avait appris qu'il était parti de Lachis.
9 And he heard it said of Thirhakah the king of Ethiopia, He is come out to fight with thee. And when he had heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
[Le Roi] donc [des Assyriens] ouït dire touchant Tirhaka Roi d'Ethiopie; il est sorti pour te combattre; ce qu'ayant entendu, il envoya des messagers vers Ezéchias, en leur disant;
10 Thus shall ye say to Hezekiah the king of Judah, as followeth, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given up into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Vous parlerez ainsi à Ezéchias Roi de Juda, disant; que ton Dieu auquel tu te confies, ne t'abuse point, en disant; Jérusalem ne sera point livrée en la main du Roi des Assyriens.
11 Behold, thou thyself hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands by destroying them utterly: and thou alone shouldst be delivered?
Voilà, tu as entendu ce que les Rois des Assyriens ont fait à tous les pays, en les détruisant entièrement; et tu échapperais?
12 Have the gods of the nations which my fathers destroyed delivered them, as Gozan, and Charan, and Rezeph, and the children of 'Eden, who were in Thelassar?
Les dieux des nations que mes ancêtres ont détruites, [savoir] de Gozan, de Charan, de Retseph, et des enfants d'Héden, qui sont en Phélasar, les ont-ils délivrées?
13 Where is the king of Chamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvayim, of Hena', and 'Ivvah?
Où est le Roi de Hamath, et le Roi d'Arpad, et le Roi de la ville de Sépharvajim, Hénah et Hivah?
14 And Hezekiah took the letter out of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the Lord, and spread it out before the Lord.
Et quand Ezéchias eut reçu les Lettres de la main des messagers, et les eut lues, il monta en la maison de l'Eternel, et Ezéchias les déploya devant l'Eternel.
15 And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying,
Puis Ezéchias fit sa prière à l'Eternel, [en disant];
16 O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, who dwellest between the cherubim, thou art the [true] God, thou alone, for all the kingdoms of the earth; [for] it is thou who hast made the heavens and earth.
O Eternel des armées! Dieu d'Israël! qui es assis entre les Chérubins; toi seul es le Dieu de tous les royaumes de la terre; tu as fait les cieux et la terre.
17 Bend down, O Lord, thy ear, and hear; open, O Lord, thy eye, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he hath sent to blaspheme the living God.
O Eternel! incline ton oreille, et écoute; ô Eternel! ouvre tes yeux, et regarde, et écoute toutes les paroles de Sanchérib, lesquelles il m'a envoyé dire pour blasphémer le Dieu vivant.
18 Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have devastated all the nations, and their land;
Il est bien vrai, ô Eternel! que les Rois des Assyriens ont détruit tous les pays, et leurs contrées;
19 And they have placed their gods into the fire; for they are no gods, but the work of man's hands, wood and stone; and these have they destroyed.
Et qu'ils ont jeté au feu leurs dieux; car ce n'étaient point des dieux; mais un ouvrage de main d'homme, du bois et de la pierre; c'est pourquoi ils les ont détruits.
20 And now, O Lord our God, save us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord, thou alone.
Maintenant donc, ô Eternel notre Dieu! délivre-nous de la main de [Sanchérib], afin que tous les Royaumes de la terre sachent que toi seul es l'Eternel.
21 Then sent Isaiah the son of Amoz unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me concerning Sennacherib the king of Assyria:
Alors Esaïe fils d'Amots envoya vers Ezéchias, pour lui dire; ainsi a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël; quant à ce dont tu m'as requis touchant Sanchérib Roi des Assyriens;
22 This is the word that the Lord hath spoken over him: She despiseth thee, she laugheth thee to scorn, the virgin daughter of Zion; behind she shaketh her head, the daughter of Jerusalem.
C'est ici la parole que l'Eternel a prononcée contre lui. La vierge fille de Sion, t'a méprisé, et s'est moquée de toi; la fille de Jérusalem a branlé la tête après toi.
23 Whom hast thou blasphemed, and [whom] hast thou scorned? and against whom hast thou raised thy voice, and lifted up thy eyes on high? against the Holy One of Israel.
Qui as-tu outragé et blasphémé? contre qui as-tu élevé ta voix, et levé tes yeux en haut? c'est contre le Saint d'Israël.
24 Through thy servants hast thou blasphemed the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots am I indeed come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars, the choice of its fir-trees: and I will enter into the height of its summit, the forest of its fruitful soil.
Tu as outragé le Seigneur par le moyen de tes serviteurs, et tu as dit; je suis monté avec la multitude de mes chariots sur le haut des montagnes, aux côtés du Liban, je couperai les plus hauts cèdres, et les plus beaux sapins qui y soient, et j'entrerai jusques en son plus haut bout, et en la forêt de son Carmel.
25 I have dug, and drunk water; and I will dry up with the sole of my feet all the streams of besieged places.
J'ai creusé [des sources], et j'en ai bu les eaux; et j'ai tari de la plante de mes pieds tous les ruisseaux des forteresses.
26 Hadst thou not heard, that in distant ages I had prepared this? in the times of antiquity when I formed it? now have I brought it along, and it came to pass to desolate into ruinous heaps fortified cities.
N'as-tu pas entendu que déjà dès longtemps j'ai fait cette ville, et que d'ancienneté je l'ai ainsi formée? et maintenant l'aurais-je conservée pour être réduite en désolation, et les villes munies, en monceaux de ruines?
27 And thus their inhabitants were of short power, they were discouraged and confounded: they were as the herbs of the field, and as the green grass; as the moss on the housetops, and as corn blasted before the ear appeareth.
Or leurs habitants étant dénués de force ont été épouvantés et confus, et sont devenus [comme] l'herbe des champs; et l'herbe verte, [comme] le foin des toits, qui [est] sec avant qu'il soit monté en tuyau.
28 But thy abiding, and thy going out, and thy coming in do I know, and thy raging against me.
Mais je sais ton repaire, ta sortie, et ton entrée, et comment tu es furieux contre moi.
29 Because of thy raging against me, and thy tumult, that is come up into my ears, will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle between thy lips, and I will cause thee to turn back on the way by which thou camest.
Parce que tu es furieux contre moi, et que ton insolence est montée à mes oreilles, je mettrai ma boucle en tes narines, et mon mors en ta bouche, et je te ferai retourner par le chemin par lequel tu es venu.
30 And this shall be unto thee the sign, Ye shall eat this year what groweth of itself, and in the second year what springeth after the same; and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.
Et ceci te sera pour signe, [ô Ezéchias], c'est qu'on mangera cette année ce qui viendra de soi-même aux champs; et en la seconde année, ce qui croîtra encore sans semer; mais la troisième année, vous sèmerez et vous moissonnerez; vous planterez des vignes, et vous en mangerez le fruit.
31 And the remnant of the house of Judah that is escaped shall yet strike root downward, and bear fruit upward.
Et ce qui est réchappé, et demeuré de reste dans la maison de Juda, étendra sa racine par-dessous, et elle produira son fruit par-dessus.
32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and that which escapeth out of Mount Zion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Car il sortira de Jérusalem quelques restes, et de la montagne de Sion quelques réchappés, la jalousie de l'Eternel des armées fera cela.
33 Therefore thus hath said the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, and he shall not shoot an arrow thereon, nor come before it with shields, nor cast up an embankment against it.
C'est pourquoi ainsi a dit l'Eternel touchant le Roi des Assyriens; il n'entrera point en cette ville, et il n'y jettera aucune flèche, il ne se présentera point contr'elle avec le bouclier, et il ne dressera point de terrasse contr'elle.
34 On the way by which he came, by the same shall he return, and into this city shall he not come, saith the Lord.
Il s'en retournera par le chemin par lequel il est venu, et il n'entrera point en cette ville, dit l'Eternel.
35 And I will shield this city to save it for my own sake, and for the sake of David my servant.
Car je garantirai cette ville, afin de la délivrer pour l'amour de moi, et pour l'amour de David mon serviteur.
36 Then went out an angel of the Lord, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty and five thousand men; and when people arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
Un Ange donc de l'Eternel sortit, et tua cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille [hommes] au camp des Assyriens; et quand on fut levé de bon matin, voilà c'étaient tous des corps morts.
37 And Sennacherib the king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
Et Sanchérib Roi des Assyriens partit de là, il s'en alla, et s'en retourna, et se tint à Ninive.
38 And it came to pass, as he was prostrating himself in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Essar-chaddon his son became king in his stead.
Et il arriva qu'étant prosterné dans la maison de Nisroc son Dieu, Adrammélec et Saréetser ses fils le tuèrent avec l'épée; puis ils se sauvèrent au pays d'Ararat, et Esarhaddon son fils régna en sa place.
