< Isaiah 22 >
1 The doom of the valley of vision. What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the roofs?
The burden of the Valley of Vision. What is [troubling] you now, that you have gone up, All of you—to the roofs?
2 O noiseful, tumultuous city, joyous town? thy slain ones are not slain with the sword, and not those that die in battle.
Full of stirs—a noisy city—an exulting city, Your pierced are not pierced of the sword, Nor dead in battle.
3 All thy rulers are fled together, they are made prisoners by the bowmen: all that are found in thee are made prisoners together, who have run away from afar.
All your rulers fled from the bow together, All found of you have been bound, They have been kept bound together, They have fled far off.
4 Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly; be not urgent to comfort me, because of the wasting of the daughter of my people.
Therefore I said, “Look [away] from me, I am bitter in my weeping, do not hurry to comfort me, For the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
5 For a day of confusion, and of treading down, and of perplexity hath the Lord Eternal of hosts in the valley of vision; walls are broken, and crying is heard against the mountain.
For a day of noise, and of treading down, And of perplexity, [is] to the Lord, YHWH of Hosts, In the Valley of Vision, digging down a wall, And crying to the mountain.
6 And 'Elam beareth the quiver, [cometh] with men in chariots and horsemen, and Kir uncovereth the shield.
And Elam has carried a quiver, In a chariot of men—horsemen, And Kir has exposed a shield.
7 And it is so, that thy choicest valleys are full of chariots, and the horsemen set themselves in array against the gate.
And it comes to pass, The choice of your valleys have been full of chariots, And the horsemen diligently place themselves at the gate.
8 And he laid open the covering of Judah; and thou didst look on that day toward the armor of the house of the forest.
And one removes the covering of Judah, And in that day you look To the armor of the house of the forest,
9 And the breaches of the city of David have ye seen, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
And you have seen the breaches of the City of David, For they have become many, And you gather the waters of the lower pool,
10 And the houses of Jerusalem have ye numbered, and ye have pulled down the houses to fortify the wall.
And you numbered the houses of Jerusalem, And you break down the houses to fortify the wall.
11 And a tank have ye made between the two walls for the water of the old pool; but ye have not looked at the Maker thereof, him that fashioned it in distant times have ye not regarded.
And you made a ditch between the two walls, For the waters of the old pool, And you have not looked to its Maker, And you have not seen its Framer of old.
12 And the Lord Eternal of hosts called on that day for weeping, and for mourning, and for baldness, and for girding with sackcloth.
And the Lord calls, YHWH of Hosts, In that day, to weeping and to lamentation, And to baldness and to girding on of sackcloth,
13 And behold [there are] gladness and joy, slaying of oxen, and killing of sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we must die.”
And behold, joy and gladness, slaying of oxen, And slaughtering of sheep, Eating of flesh, and drinking of wine, Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.
14 And it was revealed in my ears by the Lord of hosts: Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven unto you until ye die, said the Lord the Eternal of hosts.
And it has been revealed in my ears, [By] YHWH of Hosts: This iniquity is not pardoned to you, Until you die, said the Lord, YHWH of Hosts.
15 Thus hath said the Lord, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, who is [superintendent] over the house;
Thus said the Lord, YHWH of Hosts: “Go forth, go to this steward, To Shebna, who [is] over the house:
16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewn out for thyself here a sepulchre, [the man] that hath hewn out on high his sepulchre, that holloweth out in the rock a habitation for himself?
What are you [doing] here? And who has [allowed] you here? That you have hewn out a tomb for yourself here? Hewing his tomb on high, Carving a dwelling for himself in a rock.
17 Behold, the Lord will thrust thee about with a mighty throw, O man! and will lay fast hold of thee;
Behold, YHWH is casting you up and down, A casting up and down, O mighty one,
18 He will roll thee up as a bundle, and [toss thee] like a ball into a country of ample space: there shalt thou die, and there shall [remain] the chariots of thy glory, thou disgrace of the house of thy lord.
And your coverer covering, wrapping around, Wraps you around, O babbler, On a land of broad sides—there you die, And there the chariots of your glory [are] the shame of the house of your lord.
19 And I will cast thee out from thy station, and from thy post shall he pull thee down.
And I have thrust you from your station, And he throws you down from your office.
20 And it shall come to pass on that day, that I will call my servant, for Elyakim the son of Chilkiyahu.
And it has come to pass in that day, That I have called to My servant, To Eliakim son of Hilkiah.
21 And I will clothe him with thy robe, and thy girdle will I fasten around him, and thy government will I place into his hand: and he shall be as a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
And I have clothed him with your coat, And I strengthen him with your girdle, And I give your garment into his hand, And he has been for a father to the inhabitant of Jerusalem, And to the house of Judah.
22 And I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder; so that he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
And I have placed the key Of the house of David on his shoulder, And he has opened, and none is shutting, And has shut, and none is opening.
23 And I will fasten him as a tent-nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a chair of honor to his father's house.
And I have fixed him [as] a nail in a steadfast place, And he has been for a throne of glory To the house of his father.
24 And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, the shoots and offshoots, all the small vessels, from the vessels of basins, even to all the vessels of flagons.
And they have hanged on him All the glory of the house of his father, The offspring and the issue, All vessels of small quality, From vessels of basins to all vessels of flagons.
25 On that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall be removed the nail that is fastened in the sure place, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that is upon it shall be cut off; for the Lord hath spoken it.
In that day—a declaration of YHWH of Hosts, The nail that is fixed is moved In a steadfast place, Indeed, it has been cut down, and has fallen, And the burden that [is] on it has been cut off, For YHWH has spoken!”
