< Hosea 8 >

1 Set the cornet to thy mouth. [Let the enemy come] like the eagle against the house of the Lord: because they have transgressed my covenant, and against my law have they trespassed.
“ʻAi ʻae meʻalea ki ho ngutu. Te ne haʻu ʻo hangē ko e ʻikale ki he fale ʻo Sihova, koeʻuhi kuo nau maumauʻi ʻeku fuakava, pea fai talangataʻa ki heʻeku fono.
2 To me will they then cry, My God, we, Israel, know thee.
‌ʻE tangi ʻa ʻIsileli kiate au, ʻo pehē, ‘ʻE hoku ʻOtua, ʻoku mau ʻilo koe.’
3 [But] Israel did reject the good; so let the enemy pursue him.
Kuo liʻaki ʻe ʻIsileli ʻae meʻa ʻoku lelei: ʻe tuli ia ʻe he fili.
4 They set up kings, but not my advice: they chose princes and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made themselves idols so that they will be cut off.
Kuo nau fakanofo ʻae ngaahi tuʻi, kae ʻikai ʻiate au: kuo nau tuʻutuʻuni ʻae ngaahi ʻeiki, pea naʻe ʻikai te u ʻilo: kuo nau ngaohi ʻaki ʻa ʻenau siliva mo ʻenau koula ʻae tamapua, koeʻuhi ka nau ʻauha.
5 Thy calf, O Samaria, hath caused thy rejection; my anger is kindled against them: how long will it be that they cannot cleanse themselves?
Ko hoʻo ʻuhiki pulu, ʻE Samēlia, kuo ne liʻaki koe; kuo tupu ʻeku ʻita kiate kinautolu: ʻe fēfē hono fuoloa, ka nau hoko ʻo taʻehalaia?
6 For whom Israel did also that [idol] spring; an artisan made it, and no God is it: so then shall it become broken in splinters— that calf of Samaria.
He naʻe meia ʻIsileli foki ia: ko e tufunga naʻa ne ngaohi ia; ko ia ʻoku ʻikai ko e ʻOtua ia: ka ko e pulu siʻi ʻa Samēlia, ʻe maumauʻi ia ke fakaikiiki.
7 For the wind do they sow, and the whirlwind shall they reap: [their seed] bringeth no standing corn; the plant yieldeth no meal; but should it yield it, strangers would swallow it up.
He kuo nau tūtuuʻi ʻae matangi, pea te nau utu ʻae ʻahiohio: ʻoku ʻikai hano muka: ʻe ʻikai maʻu ha mahoaʻa mei hono fua: ka ai ha fua, ʻe kai ia ʻo ʻosi ʻe he kau muli.
8 Swallowed up is Israel: now are they among the nations as a vessel without any value.
Kuo fōngia hifo ʻa ʻIsileli: te nau hoko ni ʻi he lotolotonga ʻoe Senitaile, ʻo hangē ko e ipu ʻoku ʻikai ʻi ai ha fiemālie.
9 For they are needs gone up to Assyria, they who like a wild ass should dwell alone: Ephraim spendeth lovers' gifts.
He kuo nau ʻalu hake ki ʻAsilia, ha ʻasi kai vao tokotaha pe: kuo unga ʻe ʻIfalemi ʻae kau mamana.
10 But even though they should spend gifts among the nations, now will I gather them: and they shall be humbled a little through the burden of the king of princes.
‌ʻIo, neongo kuo nau unga ʻi he ngaahi puleʻanga, te u tānaki ni ʻakinautolu, pea te nau mamahi siʻi, koeʻuhi ko e kavenga ʻae tuʻi ʻoe ngaahi ʻeiki.
11 Because Ephraim hath multiplied altars to sin, the altars have been unto him the means of sinning.
Koeʻuhi kuo ngaohi ʻe ʻIfalemi ʻae ngaahi feilaulauʻanga lahi ke angahala, ʻe ai ʻae ngaahi feilaulauʻanga ke angahala ai.
12 I ever wrote down for him the great things of my law; but as a strange thing are they accounted.
Kuo u tohi kiate ia ʻae ngaahi meʻa lahi ʻa ʻeku fono, ka naʻe lau ia hangē ha meʻa kehe.
13 My sacrificial offerings they slay as common flesh that they may eat it; the Lord accepteth them not in favor: now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins; they shall indeed return to Egypt.
‌ʻOku nau feilaulau ʻaki ʻae kakano, ko e ngaahi feilaulau ʻo ʻeku ngaahi hifo, pea kai; ka ʻoku ʻikai ke maʻu ia ʻe Sihova, he te ne manatu ni ʻenau hia, pea totongi ki heʻenau ngaahi angahala: te nau liliu atu ki ʻIsipite.
14 For Israel forgot his Maker, and built palaces; and Judah multiplied fortified cities; but I will send a fire among his cities, and it shall devour their fine edifices.
He kuo fakangaloʻi ʻe ʻIsileli ʻa hono Tupuʻanga, pea ʻoku ne langa ʻae ngaahi fale fakaʻeiki; pea kuo fakalahi ʻe Siuta ʻae ngaahi kolo kuo ʻāʻi: ka te u fekau ʻae afi ki hono ngaahi kolo, pea te ne kai ʻae ngaahi fale fakaʻeiʻeiki ʻi ai.”
