Genesis 43
1 And the famine was sore in the land.
Cependant la famine pesait sur le pays.
2 And it came to pass, when they had completely eaten up the provisions which they had brought out of Egypt, that their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.
Et lorsqu'ils eurent entièrement consommé le blé qu'ils avaient apporté d'Égypte, leur père leur dit: Allez nous acheter encore quelques subsistances.
3 And Judah said unto him, thus, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
Et Juda lui répondit en disant: L'homme nous a fait cette protestation: Vous ne serez point admis en ma présence à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.
4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food;
Si tu veux laisser venir notre frère avec nous, nous irons t'acheter des subsistances;
5 But if thou sendest him not, we will not go down; for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
mais si tu ne veux pas le laisser venir, nous n'irons pas, car l'homme nous a dit: Vous ne serez point admis en ma présence, à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.
6 And Israel said, Wherefore have ye dealt so ill with me, as to tell the man that ye have yet another brother?
Et Israël dit: Pourquoi en avez-vous si mal agi envers moi que de découvrir à cet homme, si vous aviez encore un frère?
7 And they said, The man inquired particularly concerning us, and our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we possibly know that he would say, Bring down your brother?
Et ils répondirent: Il nous a questionnés sur nous et notre famille en disant: Votre père vit-il encore? avez-vous encore un frère? Et nous nous sommes expliqués aux termes de ces questions-là. Pouvions-nous nous douter qu'il dirait: Allez chercher votre frère?
8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, as also our little ones.
Et Juda dit à Israël, son père: Laisse l'enfant venir avec nous, et nous nous lèverons et nous partirons, et nous vivrons et nous ne mourrons pas, ni nous, ni toi, ni nos enfants!
9 I will be surety for him; from my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then shall I have sinned against thee all the days.
Je réponds de lui, tu le réclameras de ma main; si je ne te le ramène pas et ne te le représente pas, je me constitue coupable envers toi pour toute ma vie.
10 For, if we had not lingered, surely we had now returned the second time.
Car si nous n'avions pas tardé, nous serions déjà revenus deux fois.
11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this: take of the best products of the land in your vessels, and carry down to the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices and lotus, pistachio-nuts and almonds;
Alors Israël, leur père, leur dit: S'il faut qu'il en soit ainsi, faites ceci: Prenez dans vos valises des produits les plus vantés du pays, et portez-les à cet homme comme une offrande, un peu de baume et un peu de miel [de raisin], d'aromates et de ladanum, de pistaches et d'amandes.
12 And twofold money take in your hand; and the money that was put back in the mouth of your sacks, you must carry back in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight;
Et prenez d'autre argent dans vos mains, et reprenez l'argent qui a été remis à l'entrée de vos sacs: peut-être y a-t-il eu méprise.
13 Also your brother take along, and arise, go again unto the man.
Et prenez votre frère, et mettez-vous en marche et retournez vers cet homme.
14 And may God the Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away to you your other brother, and Benjamin. And I, if I am to be bereaved, let me be bereaved.
Et que Dieu, le Tout-Puissant, vous fasse trouver miséricorde devant l'homme, afin qu'il vous relâche votre autre frère et Benjamin! Pour moi, comme j'ai perdu mes enfants, je les perds encore.
15 And the men took that present; and twofold money they took in their hand, as also Benjamin; and they rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
Et ces hommes prirent ce présent, et ils prirent d'autre argent dans leurs mains, et Benjamin, et ils partirent et descendirent en Égypte, et se présentèrent devant Joseph.
16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the superintendent of his house, Bring these men into the house, and slay, and make ready; for with me shall these men dine at noon.
Et lorsque Joseph vit Benjamin avec eux, il dit à l'intendant de sa maison: Conduis ces hommes à la maison, et égorge des bêtes de boucherie, et apprête-les; car ces hommes mangeront avec moi à midi.
17 And the man did as Joseph had said; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.
Et l'intendant exécuta ce que lui disait Joseph, et conduisit ces hommes à la maison de Joseph.
18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house: and they said, Because of the money that came back in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, together with our asses.
Et ces hommes eurent peur quand ils se virent menés à la maison de Joseph, et ils dirent: C'est au sujet de l'argent qui s'est retrouvé dans nos sacs, qu'on nous y mène pour nous assaillir et tomber sur nous et nous prendre comme esclaves avec nos ânes.
19 And they came near to the man who was appointed over Joseph's house, and they spoke with him at the door of the house.
Alors ils abordèrent l'intendant de la maison de Joseph, et lui parlèrent à la porte de la maison, en ces termes:
20 And they said, Pardon, my lord, we came down at the first time to buy food:
Nous t'en conjurons, monseigneur! Nous sommes d'abord descendus ici pour acheter des substances.
21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in its full weight; and we have brought it back in our hand.
Puis quand nous fûmes arrivés à l'hôtellerie, et que nous eûmes ouvert nos sacs, voilà que l'argent de chacun de nous s'est trouvé en haut de son sac, notre argent avec tout son poids, et nous l'avons rapporté dans nos mains;
22 And other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food; we know not who hath put our money in our sacks.
et nous apportons d'autre argent pour acheter des subsistances. Nous ignorons qui a mis notre argent dans nos sacs.
23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, hath given you a treasure in your sacks; your money hath come to me. And he brought Simeon out unto them.
Et il répondit: Vous resterez sains et saufs! Soyez sans crainte! Votre Dieu et le Dieu de votre père a déposé pour vous un trésor dans vos sacs, votre argent m'est parvenu. Et il leur amena Siméon élargi.
24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house; and he gave them water, and they washed their feet, and he gave provender to their asses.
Et l'intendant les introduisit dans la maison de Joseph, et donna de l'eau pour baigner leurs pieds, et il donna du fourrage pour leurs ânes.
25 And they made ready the present before Joseph came home at noon; for they had heard that they should eat bread there.
Et ils préparèrent le présent en attendant que Joseph vînt à midi; car ils avaient appris qu'ils mangeraient le pain en ce lieu.
26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
Et Joseph étant arrivé au logis, ils lui apportèrent dans la maison le présent qu'ils avaient entre les mains, et ils s'inclinèrent devant lui contre terre.
27 And he asked them after their welfare, and said, Is your old father well, of whom ye spoke? is he yet alive?
Et il leur demanda de leurs nouvelles et dit: Est-il en santé votre père, ce vieillard dont vous m'avez parlé? vit-il encore?
28 And they answered, Thy servant, our father, is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and prostrated themselves.
Et ils répondirent: Ton serviteur, notre père, est en santé, il vil encore. Et ils s'inclinèrent et se prosternèrent.
29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your youngest brother, of whom ye spoke unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.
Alors levant les yeux il aperçut Benjamin, son frère, fils de sa mère, et dit: Est-ce là votre frère cadet dont vous m'avez parlé?
30 And Joseph hastened away, for his affection toward his brother became enkindled, and he sought to weep; and he entered into his chamber and wept there.
Et il dit: Que Dieu te soit propice, mon fils! Et Joseph avait hâte, car son cœur s'embrasait pour son frère et il cherchait où pleurer, et il entra dans l'intérieur, et il pleura.
31 And he washed his face, and came out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on the bread.
Puis s'étant lavé le visage, il sortit, et il se contenait et dit: Servez!
32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves; and for the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians may not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
Et on le servit à part, et eux à part, et les Égyptiens qui mangeaient avec lui, à part; car les Egyptiens n'osent pas manger le pain avec les Hébreux, parce que c'est une abomination pour les Egyptiens.
33 And they sat before him, the first-born according to his prior birth, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marveled one at the other.
Et ils se trouvaient assis devant lui, le premier-né selon son rang de primogéniture, et le cadet à son rang de cadet; et ces hommes s'entre-regardaient stupéfaits.
34 And he sent portions unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion exceeded the portions of all of them fivefold. And they drank, and were merry with him.
Et Joseph leur faisait porter des portions des mets qui lui étaient servis, et la portion de Benjamin était cinq fois plus grande que les portions d'eux tous. Et ils burent, et firent gaie chère avec lui.
