< Genesis 11 >
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one kind of words.
So it came to pass that, all the earth, was of one manner of speech, —and of one stock of words.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed toward the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.
And it came to pass as they brake away onwards, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.
3 And they said to one another, Go to, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly. And thus the brick served them for stone, and slime served them for mortar.
Then said they, each man to his friend, Come on! let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly, —So the bricks, served them for stone, and bitumen, served them for mortar,
4 And they said, Go to, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower, the top of which may reach unto heaven; and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
And they said Come on! let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower with its head in the heavens, so let us make for ourselves a name, —lest we be scattered abroad over the face of all the earth.
5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man were building.
And Yahweh came down, to behold the city, and the tower, —which the sons of men had built.
6 And the Lord said, Behold, it is one people, and they have all one language, and this is the first thing they undertake to do; and now shall they not be restrained in all which they have imagined to do?
Then said Yahweh: Lo! one people and one manner of speech, have they all, this, then is what they have begun to do, —now, therefore, nothing will be withholden from them which they may plan to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and confound there their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
Come on! let us go down, and there confuse their speech, —that they may not understand, each man the speech of his friend.
8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city.
So Yahweh scattered them from thence over the face of all the earth, —and so they left off building the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel, because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth; and from there did the Lord scatter them abroad over the face of all the earth.
For this cause, was the name thereof called Babel ["Confusion"]; because there, did Yahweh confuse the speech of all the earth, —and, from thence, did Yahweh scatter them abroad, over the face of all the earth.
10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem, when a hundred years old, begat Arpachshad, two years after the flood.
These, are the genealogies of Shem, Shem was a hundred years old when he begat Arpachshad, two years after the flood
11 And Shem lived after he had begotten Arpachshad five hundred years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Shem lived after he begat Arpachshad, five hundred years, —and begat sons and daughters.
12 And Arpachshad lived five and thirty years, and begat Shelach.
And, Arpachshad, lived thirty-five years, —and begat Shelah;
13 And Arpachshad lived after he had begotten Shelach four hundred and three years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Arpachshad lived after he begat Shelah, four hundred and three years, —and begat sons and daughters.
14 And Shelach lived thirty years, and begat Eber.
And, Shelah, lived thirty years, —and begat Eber;
15 And Shelach lived after he had begotten Eber four hundred and three years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Shelah lived, after he begat Eber, four hundred and three years, —and begat sons and daughters.
16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg.
And Eber lived thirty-four years, —and begat Peleg;
17 And Eber lived after he had begotten Peleg four hundred and thirty years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Eber lived after he begat Peleg, four hundred and thirty years, —and begat sons and daughters.
18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu.
And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:
19 And Peleg lived after he had begotten Reu two hundred and nine years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Peleg lived after he begat Reu, two hundred and nine years, —and begat sons and daughters.
20 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug.
And Reu lived thirty-two years—and begat Serug;
21 And Reu lived after he had begotten Serug two hundred and seven years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Reu lived after he begat Serug, two hundred and seven years, —and begat sons and daughters.
22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nachor.
And Serug lived thirty years, —and begat Nahor;
23 And Serug lived after he had begotten Nachor two hundred years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Serug lived after he begat Nahor, two hundred years, —and begat sons and daughters.
24 And Nachor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terach.
And Nahor lived twenty-nine years, —and begat Terah;
25 And Nachor lived after he had begotten Terach a hundred and nineteen years; and begat sons and daughters.
and Nahor lived, after he begat Terah, a hundred and nineteen years, —and begat sons and daughters.
26 And Terach lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nachor, and Haran.
And Terah lived seventy years, —and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 Now these are the generations of Terach: Terach begat Abram, Nachor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
These, then are the generations of Terah, Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran, —and, Haran, begat Lot;
28 And Haran died before his father Terach in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.
and Haran died, in the presence of Terah his father, —in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.
29 And Abram and Nachor took themselves wives; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nachor's wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Yiscah.
And Abram and Nahor took to themselves wives; the name of Abram’s wife, was Sarai; and, the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, daughter of Haran father of Milcah, and father of Iscah.
30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
And, Sarai, remained barren, —she had no child,
31 And Terach took Abram his son, and Lot, the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of his son Abram; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Charan, and dwelt there.
And Terah took Abram his son and Lot son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, wife of Abram his son, —and came forth with them out of Ur of the Chaldees, that they might go their way towards the land of Canaan, and they came in as far as Haran and dwelt there.
32 And the days of Terach were two hundred and five years; and Terach died in Charan.
And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, —and Terah died in Haran.
