Ezra 5
1 Then prophesied Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of 'Iddo, the prophets, unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel, concerning them.
さて預言者ハガイおよびイドの子ゼカリヤのふたりの預言者は、ユダとエルサレムにいるユダヤ人に向かって、彼らの上にいますイスラエルの神の名によって預言した。
2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealthiel, and Jeshua' the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God helping them.
そこでシャルテルの子ゼルバベルおよびヨザダクの子エシュアは立ちあがって、エルサレムにある神の宮を建て始めた。神の預言者たちも、彼らと共にいて彼らを助けた。
3 At this same time came to them Thathnai, the governor on this side of the river, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and thus they said unto them, “Who hath given you an order to build this house, and to complete these walls?”
その時、川向こうの州の知事タテナイおよびセタル・ボズナイとその同僚は彼らの所に来てこう言った、「だれがあなたがたにこの宮を建て、この城壁を築きあげることを命じたのか」。
4 Then said we unto them after this manner, what are the names of the men that erect this building.
また「この建物を建てている人々の名はなんというのか」と尋ねた。
5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, so that they did not stop them, till the matter came to Darius; and they then returned an answer by letter concerning this.
しかしユダヤ人の長老たちの上には、神の目が注がれていたので、彼らはこれをやめさせることができず、その事をダリヨスに奏して、その返答の来るのを待った。
6 A copy of the letter which Thathnai, the governor on this side of the river, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions, the Apharsachites, who were on this side of the river, sent unto king Darius.
川向こうの州の知事タテナイおよびセタル・ボズナイとその同僚である川向こうの州の知事たちが、ダリヨス王に送った手紙の写しは次のとおりである。
7 They sent a report unto him, and thus was it written therein: Unto king Darius be all peace.
すなわち、彼らが王に送った手紙には、次のようにしるされてあった。「願わくはダリヨス王に全き平安があるように。
8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which they are building with heavy stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work is urged with speed, and it prospereth in their hands.
王に次のことをお知らせいたします。すなわち、われわれがユダヤ州へ行き、かの大いなる神の宮へ行って見たところ、それは大きな石をもって建てられ、材木を組んで壁をつくり、その工事は勤勉に行われ、彼らの手によって大いにはかどっています。
9 Then asked we these elders, and after this manner said we unto them, Who hath given you the order to build this house, and to complete these walls?
そこでわれわれはその長老たちに尋ねてこう言いました、『だれがあなたがたにこの宮を建て、この城壁を築きあげることを命じたのか』と。
10 Also their names did we ask of them, to let thee know them, that we might write down the names of the men that are at their head.
われわれはまた彼らのかしらたる人々の名を書きしるして、あなたにお知らせするために、その名を尋ねました。
11 And in this manner did they return us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we build the house that was built before this many years, and a great king of Israel built and completed it.
すると、彼らはわれわれに答えてこう言いました、『われわれは天地の神のしもべであって、年久しい昔に建てられた宮を、再び建てるのです。これはもと、イスラエルの大いなる王の建てあげたものですが、
12 But since our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them up into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, and he destroyed this house, and carried the people as exiles into Babylon.
われわれの先祖たちが、天の神の怒りを引き起したため、神は彼らを、カルデヤびとバビロンの王ネブカデネザルの手に渡されたので、彼はこの宮をこわし、民をバビロンに捕えて行きました。
13 However, in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, king Cyrus gave an order to build this house of God.
ところがバビロンの王クロスの元年に、クロス王は神のこの宮を再び建てることの命令を下されました。
14 And also the vessels of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, these did king Cyrus take out of the temple of Babylon, and gave them unto one, Sheshbazzar by name, whom he had appointed as governor;
またクロス王は先にネブカデネザルが、エルサレムの宮からバビロンの神殿に移した神の宮の金銀の器を、バビロンの神殿から取り出して、彼が総督に任じたセシバザルという名の者に渡して、
15 And he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple which is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built on its site.
彼に言われました、「これらの器を携えて行って、エルサレムにある宮に納め、神の宮をもとの所に建てよ」と。
16 Then came this same Sheshbazzar, [and] laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and from that time even until now they have been building it, but it is not yet finished.
そこでこのセシバザルは来てエルサレムにある神の宮の基礎をすえました。その時から今に至るまで、建築を続けていますが、まだ完成しないのです』と。
17 And now, if it seem good to the king, let search be made in the king's treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that an order was given by king Cyrus to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send to us his pleasure concerning this matter.
それで今、もし王がよしと見られるならば、バビロンにある王の宝庫を調べて、エルサレムの神のこの宮を建てることの命令が、はたしてクロス王から出ているかどうかを確かめ、この事についての王のお考えをわれわれに伝えてください」。
