Exodus 32
1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, the people assembled themselves together around Aaron, and they said unto him, Up, make us gods, that shall go before us; for of this man Moses, who hath brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.
Cependant, le peuple, voyant que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne, se rassembla autour d'Aaron, et il dit: et fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous; car pour Moïse, cet homme qui nous a tirés de la terre d'Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé.
2 And Aaron said unto them, Take out the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
Aaron leur dit: Ôtez les boucles d'or des oreilles de vos femmes et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi.
3 And all the people took out the golden earrings, which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
Et ils ôtèrent les boucles d'or des oreilles de leurs femmes et de leurs filles, et ils les apportèrent à Aaron.
4 And he took them from their hand, and fashioned it in a mould, and he made of it a molten calf; and they said, These are thy gods, O Israel, that have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Les ayant reçues de leurs mains, il les façonna selon un modèle, et il en fit un veau jeté en fonte, et il dit: Voici tes dieux, Israël, ceux qui t'ont fait sortir de la terre d'Égypte.
5 And when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron called out, and said, A feast unto the Lord is tomorrow.
Et Aaron voyant le peuple, érigea devant lui un autel, et il cria à haute voix: C'est demain la fête du Seigneur.
6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt-offerings, and brought near peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
Et s'étant levé de grand matin, il fit venir les holocaustes et il apporta les hosties pacifiques; cependant, le peuple s'assit pour boire et manger, puis il se leva pour jouer.
7 And the Lord spoke unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, hath become corrupt:
Le Seigneur parla alors à Moïse, et lui dit: Pars au plus vite; descends d'ici, car il a prévariqué, ton peuple, ce peuple que tu as tiré de la terre d’Égypte.
8 They have turned aside quickly from the way which I have commanded them; they have made themselves a molten calf: and they have bowed themselves to it, and have sacrificed unto it, and have said, These are thy gods, O Israel, that have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Ils sont bien vite sortis de la voie que je leur avais prescrite; ils se sont fait un veau d'or, ils l'ont adoré, ils lui ont sacrifié, et ils ont dit: Voici tes dieux, Israël, ceux qui t'ont fait sortir de la terre d'Égypte.
9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people.
10 And now let me alone, and my wrath shall wax hot against them, and I will make an end of them; and I will make of thee a great nation.
Laisse-moi donc, que dans mon courroux contre eux je les écrase, et je te placerai ensuite à la tête d'un grand peuple.
11 Thereupon Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Why, O Lord, shall thy wrath wax hot against thy people, that thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt, with great power and with a mighty hand?
Et Moïse pria devant la face, du Seigneur Dieu, et il dit: Pourquoi, Seigneur, êtes-vous plein de colère contre votre peuple, contre ce peuple que vous avez tiré de la terre d'Égypte, par votre grande puissance et votre bras très haut?
12 Wherefore should the Egyptians say thus, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to destroy them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent thee of the evil decreed against thy people.
Que les Égyptiens ne puissent pas dire: C'est par méchanceté qu'il les a fait sortir, pour les faire périr dans les montagnes et disparaître de la terre; apaisez le courroux de votre cœur, soyez miséricordieux envers la perversité de votre peuple.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou didst swear by thy own self, and speak unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
Souvenez-vous de vos serviteurs Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, à qui de vous- même vous avez juré, disant: Je multiplierai votre race comme les étoiles du ciel; et ajoutant que vous leur donneriez toute cette terre, et qu’ils la posséderaient à jamais.
14 And the Lord bethought himself of the evil which he had spoken to do unto his people.
Et le Seigneur s'apaisa et conserva son peuple.
15 And Moses turned about, and went down from the mount with the two tables of the testimony in his hand: tables inscribed on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they inscribed.
Et s'étant retourné, Moïse descendit de la montagne, tenant en ses mains les deux tables du témoignage, tables de pierre gravées en deux colonnes à droite et à gauche.
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved upon the tables.
Ces tables étaient l'œuvre de Dieu, les caractères de Dieu y étaient gravés.
17 And Joshua heard the noise of the people in its shouting, and he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
Alors, entendant la voix du peuple, Josué dit à Moïse: Des cris de guerre viennent du camp.
18 And he said, It is not the voice of a shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of a cry for defeat; the noise of singing do I hear.
Et Moïse dit: Non, ce n'est pas la voix qui excite le courage, ni la voix qui crie la fuite, mais une voix chantant le vin, que j'entends.
19 And it came to pass, when he came nigh unto the camp, and he saw the calf, and the dancing: that the anger of Moses waxed hot, and he cast from his hands the tables, and broke them at the foot of the mount.
Arrivé près du camp, lorsqu'il vit le veau d'or et les danses, il se courrouça en son cœur, il rejeta de ses mains les deux tables, et les brisa au pied de la montagne.
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in fire, and ground it to a powder, and he strewed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
Puis, prenant le veau qu'ils avaient fait, il le consuma dans les flammes, il le réduisit en poudre, mit dans de l'eau cette poudre et la fit boire aux fils d'Israël.
21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What hath this people done unto thee, that thou hast brought upon it so great a sin?
Et Moïse dit à Aaron: Que t'a fait ce peuple pour que tu aies fait tomber sur lui cet énorme péché?
22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my Lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that it is bent on mischief.
Aaron répondit: Ne t'irrite pas, tu connais la violence de ce peuple.
23 And they said unto me, Make us gods that shall go before us; for of this man Moses, who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what hath become of him.
Ils m’ont dit: Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous; car pour Moïse, cet homme qui nous a amenés de la terre d'Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé.
24 And I said unto them, Who hath any gold? They took it off themselves and gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
Et je leur ai dit: Si quelqu'un de vous a de l’or, qu'il en dispose. Et ils m'en ont donné, et je l'ai jeté en fonte, et ce veau en est sorti.
25 And Moses saw the people that it had become unruly; for Aaron had made it unruly for a disgrace among their opponents.
Moïse ayant vu que le peuple était brisé; car Aaron l'avait brisé, grand sujet de joie pour ses ennemis,
26 Moses then placed himself in the gate of the camp, and said, Whoever is on the Lord's side, let him come unto me! and there assembled themselves unto him all the sons of Levi.
Moïse se tint debout sur la porte du camp, et dit: Qui de vous est pour le Seigneur? qu’il vient à moi. Et tous les fils de Lévi se réunirent autour de lui.
27 And he said unto them, Thus hath said the Eternal, the God of Israel, Put ye every man his sword by his side, and go ye hither and thither, from gate to gate in the camp, and slay ye every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his relative.
Et il leur dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël: Ceignez chacun votre glaive, traversez le camp, allez d'une porte à l'autre, et que chacun tue son frère, son voisin, son proche.
28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people on that day about three thousand men.
Et les fils de Lévi tirent ce que leur avait commandé Moïse, et en ce jour-là trois mille hommes du peuple périrent.
29 And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, yea even every man on his son, and on his brother; and to bestow upon you this day a blessing.
Et Moïse leur dit: Chacun de vous aujourd'hui a consacré ses mains au Seigneur avec son fils, ou son frère, pour attirer sur vous la bénédiction du Seigneur.
30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I may obtain an atonement for your sin.
Le lendemain Moise dit au peuple: Vous avez commis un énorme péché; je vais maintenant monter vers Dieu, afin d'implorer son pardon pour votre crime.
31 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people hath sinned a great sin, and they have made themselves gods of gold.
Moïse retourna donc vers le Seigneur, et il dit: Je vous implore, Seigneur, ce peuple a commis un énorme pêché: ils se sont fait des dieux d'or.
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—; but if not, blot me out, I pray thee, from thy book which thou hast written.
Mais maintenant, si vous le voulez, remettez-leur ce péché; sinon effacez-moi de votre livre que vous avez écrit.
33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out from my book.
Le Seigneur répondit à Moïse: Si quelqu'un pèche contre moi, c'est lui que j'effacerai de mon livre.
34 And now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee; behold, my angel shall go before thee; but on the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
Va, descends et guide ce peuple jusqu'au lieu que je t'ai dit; mon ange marchera devant ta face, et au jour où je les visiterai je ferai retomber sur eux leur péché.
35 And the Lord sent a plague among the people, because that they had made the calf which Aaron made.
Et le Seigneur frappa le peuple, à cause du veau d'or qu'avait fait Aaron.
