< Exodus 20 >
1 And God spoke all these words, saying,
God spoke all these words, saying,
2 I am the Lord thy God, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Do not have other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thyself any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
"Do not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow thyself down to them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
you must not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation] of those who hate me,
6 And showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
"Do not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work.
Six days you may labor, and do all your work,
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath in honor of the Lord thy God; on it thou shalt not do any work, neither thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You must not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates;
11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the seventh day, and made it holy.
12 Honor thy father and thy mother; in order that thy days may be prolonged upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
"Honor your father and your mother, that it may be well with you, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
"Do not murder.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
"Do not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.
"Do not covet your neighbor's house. Do not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
18 And all the people perceived the thunders, and the lightnings, and the sound of the cornet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they removed trembling, and stood afar off.
And all the people saw the thunder and the lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, and the people were afraid and trembled and kept their distance.
19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
They said to Moses, "Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but do not let God speak with us, lest we die."
20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not; for in order to prove you, did God come, and in order that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin."
21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
The people stayed at a distance, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
22 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that from heaven I have spoken with you.
The LORD said to Moses, "This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
23 Ye shall not make any thing with me; gods of silver, and gods of gold ye shall not make unto yourselves.
You shall most certainly not make alongside of me gods of silver, or gods of gold for yourselves.
24 An altar of earth shalt thou make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thy oxen; in every place where I shall permit my name to be mentioned, I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.
You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you.
25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it.
26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps upon my altar, that thy nakedness be not laid open thereon.
Neither shall you go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.'
