Exodus 14
1 And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,
L’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn back and encamp before Pi-hachiroth, between Migdol and the sea; in front of Baal-zephon; opposite to this shall ye encamp by the sea.
"Dis aux enfants d’Israël de remonter et de camper en face de Pi-Hahiroth, entre Migdol et la mer; devant Baal-Cefôn, à l’opposite, vous camperez au bord de la mer.
3 And Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.
Pharaon se dira que les enfants d’Israël sont égarés dans ce pays; que le désert les emprisonne.
4 And I will harden the heart of Pharaoh, that he shall follow after them; and I will get myself honor on Pharaoh, and on all his host; and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord; and they did so.
Et je raffermirai le cœur de Pharaon et il les poursuivra; puis j’accablerai de ma puissance Pharaon avec toute son armée et les Égyptiens apprendront que je suis l’Éternel." Ils obéirent.
5 And it was told to the king of Egypt that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed with respect to the people, and they said, What is this which we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?
On rapporta au roi d’Égypte que le peuple s’enfuyait. Alors les dispositions de Pharaon et de ses serviteurs changèrent à l’égard de ce peuple et ils dirent: "Qu’avons-nous fait là, d’affranchir les Israélites de notre sujétion!"
6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him.
Il fit atteler son char, emmena avec lui son peuple,
7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.
prit six cents chars d’élite et tous les chariots d’Égypte, tous couverts de guerriers.
8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel; and the children of Israel went out with a high hand.
L’Éternel fortifia le cœur de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte, qui se mit à la poursuite des enfants d’Israël. Cependant les Israélites s’avançaient triomphants.
9 And the Egyptians pursued after them, and they overtook them encamping by the sea, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, beside Pi-hachiroth, before Baal-zephon.
Les Égyptiens qui les poursuivaient les rencontrèrent, campés sur le rivage; tous les attelages de Pharaon, ses cavaliers, son armée, les joignirent près de Pi-Hahiroth, devant Baal-Cefôn.
10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they were greatly afraid; and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord.
Comme Pharaon approchait, les enfants d’Israël levèrent les yeux et voici que l’Égyptien était à leur poursuite; remplis d’effroi, les Israélites jetèrent des cris vers l’Éternel.
11 And they said unto Moses, Is it because there were no graves in Egypt, that thou hast taken us away to die in the wilderness? what is this which thou hast done to us, to bring us forth out of Egypt?
Et ils dirent à Moïse: "Est-ce faute de trouver des sépulcres en Égypte que tu nous as conduits mourir dans le désert? Quel bien nous as-tu fait, en nous tirant de l’Égypte?
12 Is not this the word that we spoke unto thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? for it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.
N’Est-ce pas ainsi que nous te parlions en Égypte, disant: ‘Laisse-nous servir les Égyptiens?’ De fait, mieux valait pour nous être esclaves des Égyptiens, que de périr dans le désert."
13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will do for you today; for as ye have seen the Egyptians today, ye shall not see them again any more for ever.
Moïse répondit au peuple: "Soyez sans crainte! Attendez, et vous serez témoins de l’assistance que l’Éternel vous procurera en ce jour! Certes, si vous avez vu les Égyptiens aujourd’hui, vous ne les reverrez plus jamais.
14 The Lord will fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
L’Éternel combattra pour vous; et vous, tenez-vous tranquilles!"
15 And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward;
L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Pourquoi m’implores-tu? Ordonne aux enfants d’Israël de se mettre en marche.
16 But do thou lift up thy staff, and stretch out thy hand over the sea, and divide it; and the children of Israel shall go through the midst of the sea on dry ground.
Et toi, lève ta verge, dirige ta main vers la mer et divise la; et les enfants d’Israël entreront au milieu de la mer à pied sec."
17 And I, behold, I will harden the heart of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get myself honor on Pharaoh, and on all his host, on his chariots, and on his horsemen.
De mon côté, je vais affermir le cœur des Égyptiens pour qu’ils y entrent après eux; et alors j’accablerai Pharaon et son armée entière, ses chars et sa cavalerie.
18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have got myself honor on Pharaoh, on his chariots, and on his horsemen.
Les Égyptiens reconnaîtront que je suis l’Éternel, quand j’accablerai Pharaon, ses chars et ses cavaliers."
19 And the angel of God, that went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud removed from before them, and stood behind them;
Le messager de Dieu, qui marchait en avant du camp d’Israël, passa derrière eux, la colonne nébuleuse cessa d’être à leur tête et se fixa en arrière."
20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness [to the first], but it gave light by night [to these]: and the one came not near unto the other all the night.
Elle passa ainsi entre le camp égyptien et celui des Israélites: pour les uns il y eut nuée et ténèbres, pour les autres la nuit fut éclairée; et, de toute la nuit, les uns n’approchèrent point des autres.
21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord drove back the sea with a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
Moïse étendit sa main sur la mer et l’Éternel fit reculer la mer, toute la nuit, par un vent d’est impétueux et il mit la mer à sec et les eaux furent divisées.
22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them, on their right hand, and on their left.
Les enfants d’Israël entrèrent au milieu de la mer, dans son lit desséché, les eaux se dressant en muraille à leur droite et à leur gauche.
23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen, to the midst of the sea.
Les Égyptiens les poursuivirent et tous les chevaux de Pharaon, ses chariots, ses cavaliers, entrèrent à leur suite au milieu de la mer.
24 And it came to pass in the morning watch, that the Lord looked unto the camp of the Egyptians with the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and brought into confusion the camp of the Egyptians;
Or, à la dernière veille, l’Éternel fit peser sur l’armée égyptienne une colonne de feu et une nuée et jeta la perturbation dans l’armée égyptienne
25 And he took off the wheels of their chariots, and caused them to move onward with difficulty; and the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
et il détacha les roues de ses chars, les faisant ainsi avancer pesamment. Alors l’Égyptien s’écria: "Fuyons devant Israël, car l’Éternel combat pour eux contre l’Égypte!"
26 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thy hand over the sea, and the waters shall return over the Egyptians, over their chariots, and over their horsemen.
Le Seigneur dit à Moïse: "Étends ta main sur la mer et les eaux rebrousseront sur l’Égyptien, sur ses chars et sur ses cavaliers."
27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned, when the morning appeared, to its strength; while the Egyptians were fleeing against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
Moïse étendit sa main sur la mer et la mer, aux approches du matin, reprit son niveau comme les Égyptiens s’élançaient en avant; et le Seigneur précipita les Égyptiens au sein de la mer.
28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen with all the host of Pharaoh that came after them into the sea: there remained of them not even one.
Les eaux, en refluant, submergèrent chariots, cavalerie, toute l’armée de Pharaon qui était entrée à leur suite dans la mer; pas un d’entre eux n’échappa.
29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry ground in the midst of the sea; and the waters were unto them a wall on their right hand, and on their left.
Pour les enfants d’Israël, ils s’étaient avancés à pied sec au milieu de la mer, ayant les eaux, comme un mur, à leur droite et à leur gauche.
30 Thus the Lord saved Israel on that day out of the land of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the shore of the sea.
L’Éternel, en ce jour, sauva Israël de la main de l’Égypte; Israël vit l’Égyptien gisant sur le rivage de la mer.
31 And Israel saw that great power which the Lord had shown on the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and then believed in the Lord, and in Moses his servant.
Israël reconnut alors la haute puissance que le Seigneur avait déployée sur l’Égypte et le peuple révéra le Seigneur; et ils eurent foi en l’Éternel et en Moïse, son serviteur.
