Exodus 1
1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, that came into Egypt with Jacob, every man and his household they came.
No skal de få høyra namni på Israels-sønerne som kom til Egyptarland; med Jakob kom dei, kvar med sin huslyd:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
Ruben og Simeon og Levi og Juda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
Issakar og Sebulon og Benjamin,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Dan, Naftali, Gad og Asser.
5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; together with Joseph who was already in Egypt.
Med alle i hop var det sytti mann som var ætta frå Jakob; Josef han var no alt i Egyptarland.
6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.
Og Josef døydde, og alle brørne hans, og heile den ætti.
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
Men Israels-folket muna og voks og auka og vart uhorveleg mannsterke, so dei fyllte heile landet.
8 Now there rose up a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
Då kom det ein ny konge i Egyptarland, som ikkje visste noko um Josef.
9 And he said unto his people: Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and mightier than we.
Og han sagde med folki sine: «Sjå, Israels-lyden er større og sterkare enn me.
10 Come, let us deal wisely with them lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there happen to be a war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and depart out of the land.
Lat oss no fara klokt fram, so dei ikkje skal aukast so mykje! For kjem det ufred, so kunde dei gjerne slå seg i hop med uvenerne våre, og strida mot oss, og fara or landet!»
11 And they set over taskmasters, to afflict them with their burdensome labors; and they built treasure cities, for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses.
So sette dei futar yver deim, som skulde plåga deim med tungarbeid, og dei laut byggja tvo byar med varehus for Farao; det var Pitom og Ramses.
12 But in the measure that they afflicted them, so they multiplied and so they spread out; and they felt abhorrence because of the children of Israel.
Men di meir dei plåga deim, di meir auka dei, og di meir breidde dei seg ut, og egyptarane tok til å fæla for Israels-folket.
13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to labor with rigor:
Soleis nøydde dei no Israels-folket til å træla for seg,
14 And they made their lives bitter with hard labor, in mortar, and in bricks, and in all manner of labor in the field; in all their service, wherein they made them labor with rigor.
og gjorde livet surt for deim med hardt arbeid i leirtaki og tiglverki og med allslags jordarbeid: alt arbeidet dei vilde ha gjort, det truga dei deim til å gjera.
15 And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah;
Og kongen i Egyptarland sagde til dei hebraiske ljosmøderne - den eine av dei heitte Sifra og den andre Pua -:
16 And he said: When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, ye shall look upon the birth; if it be a son, then shall ye kill him; but if it be a daughter, then may she live.
«Kvar gong de hjelper ei hebraisk barnsengkona, » sagde han, «so skal de sjå i fødestolen: Er det son ho hev fenge, so drep honom! er det dotter, so må ho liva.»
17 But the midwives feared God, and they did not as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but saved the men-children alive.
Men ljosmøderne hadde age for Gud, og gjorde ikkje som kongen i Egyptarland sagde, men let småsveinarne liva.
18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and he said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?
Då kalla kongen ljosmøderne fyre seg, og sagde med deim: «Kvi gjer de dette og let sveinborni liva?»
19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively; ere the midwife cometh in unto them they are delivered.
«Dei hebraiske konorne er ikkje som dei egyptiske, » svara ljosmøderne; «dei er sterkare; innan ljosmori kjem, hev dei fenge barnet.»
20 And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
Då gjorde Gud vel imot ljosmøderne; og folket auka, og vart ovleg mangment.
21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
Og for di ljosmøderne hadde age for Gud, so gav han deim ætt og avkjøme.
22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Men Farao sende bod utyver til heile folket sitt og sagde: «Kvar son som kjem til verdi, skal de kasta i elvi; berre døtterne skal de lata liva!»
