Esther 5
1 And it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and placed herself in the inner court of the king's house, opposite the king's apartment; and the king was sitting upon his royal throne in the royal apartment, opposite to the entrance of the house.
Le troisième jour, Esther revêtit ses vêtements royaux et se tint dans la cour intérieure de la maison du roi, devant l’appartement du roi. Le roi était assis sur son trône royal dans l’appartement royal, en face de l’entrée du palais.
2 And it happened, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained grace in his eyes; and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand; and Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.
Lorsque le roi vit la reine Esther debout dans la cour, elle trouva grâce à ses yeux, et le roi tendit à Esther le sceptre d’or qu’il tenait à la main. Esther, s’approchant, toucha le bout du sceptre.
3 Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? if it be equal to half of the kingdom it shall still be given thee.
Et le roi lui dit: « Qu’as-tu, reine Esther, et que demandes-tu? Quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, elle te serait donnée. »
4 And Esther said, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet which I have prepared for him.
Esther dit: « Si le roi le trouve bon, que le roi vienne aujourd’hui avec Aman au festin que je lui ai préparé. »
5 Then said the king, Bring Haman quickly hither to fulfill the word of Esther: so came the king with Haman to the banquet which Esther had prepared.
Le roi dit: « Qu’on appelle de suite Aman, pour faire ce qu’a dit Esther. » Le roi se rendit avec Aman au festin qu’Esther avait préparé.
6 And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? even if it be equal to half of the kingdom, it shall still be done.
Au festin du vin, le roi dit à Esther: « Quelle est ta demande? Elle te sera accordée. Que désires-tu? Quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, tu l’obtiendras. »
7 Then answered Esther, and said, My petition and my request are,
Esther répondit et dit: « Voici ma demande et mon désir:
8 If I have found grace in the eyes of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to fulfill my request, that the king may come with Haman to the banquet which I will prepare for them, and tomorrow will I do according to the word of the king.
si j’ai trouvé grâce aux yeux du roi et s’il plaît au roi d’accorder ma demande et d’accomplir mon désir, que le roi vienne avec Aman au festin que je leur préparerai, et demain je ferai au roi la réponse qu’il demande. »
9 And Haman went forth on that day joyful and with a glad heart; but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, who did not rise up, nor move out of the way for him, then was Haman filled against Mordecai with fury.
Aman sortit ce jour-là content et le cœur joyeux. Mais lorsqu’il vit, à la porte du roi, Mardochée qui ne se levait ni ne bougeait devant lui, il fut rempli de colère contre Mardochée.
10 Nevertheless Haman refrained himself, and went to his house: he then sent and had his friends brought in with Zeresh his wife.
Aman se contint néanmoins et s’en alla chez lui. Puis, ayant envoyé chercher ses amis et Zarès, sa femme,
11 And Haman recounted to them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had made him great, and how he had advanced him above the princes and the servants of the king.
Aman leur parla de la magnificence de ses richesses, du grand nombre de ses fils, et du haut rang que le roi lui avait conféré, en l’élevant au-dessus de ses princes et de ses serviteurs.
12 And Haman said [farther], Yea, Esther the queen did not let any one come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself: and also for tomorrow am I invited unto her with the king.
« Je suis même le seul, ajouta-t-il, que la reine Esther ait admis avec le roi au festin qu’elle a préparé, et je suis encore invité pour demain chez elle avec le roi.
13 Yet all this profiteth me nothing, every time that I see Mordecai the Jew sitting in the king's gate.
Mais tout cela ne peut me suffire, aussi longtemps que je verrai Mardochée, le Juif, assis à la porte du roi. »
14 Then said unto him Zeresh his wife with all his friends, Let them make a gallows of fifty cubits high, and in the mourning speak unto the king that they may hang Mordecai thereon; and then go thou in with the king unto the banquet joyfully. And the thing pleased Haman; and he had the gallows made.
Zarès, sa femme, et tous ses amis lui dirent: « Qu’on prépare un bois haut de cinquante coudées, et demain matin demande au roi qu’on y pende Mardochée, et tu iras joyeux au festin avec le roi. » Cet avis plut à Aman, et il fit préparer le bois.
