Esther 4
1 When Mordecai ascertained all that had been done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth [strewed] with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and bitter cry;
Et Mardochée sut tout ce qui s’était fait; et Mardochée déchira ses vêtements et se couvrit d’un sac et de cendre, et sortit au milieu de la ville et poussa un cri grand et amer.
2 And thus he came up to the front of the king's gate; for none dared to enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
Et il vint jusque devant la porte du roi, car il n’était pas permis d’entrer, vêtu d’un sac, dans la porte du roi.
3 And in each and every province, in every place whither the king's decree and his law had reached, there was great mourning for the Jews, with fasting and weeping and wailing; and a sackcloth [strewed] with ashes became the bed of the great.
Et dans chaque province, partout où parvint la parole du roi et son édit, il y eut un grand deuil parmi les Juifs, des jeûnes et des pleurs, et des lamentations; beaucoup firent leur lit du sac et de la cendre.
4 Then came the maidens of Esther with her chamberlains and told it her; and the queen was exceedingly terrified; and she sent garments to clothe Mordecai, and to remove his sackcloth from him, but he accepted them not.
Et les jeunes filles d’Esther et ses eunuques vinrent et le lui rapportèrent, et la reine en fut dans une grande angoisse; et elle envoya des vêtements pour vêtir Mardochée, et pour lui faire ôter son sac de dessus lui, mais il ne les accepta pas.
5 Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a charge for Mordecai to know what this was, and why this was.
Et Esther appela Hathac, l’un des eunuques du roi, qu’il avait placé auprès d’elle, et elle lui commanda [d’aller] vers Mardochée pour savoir ce que c’était et pourquoi c’était.
6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.
Et Hathac sortit vers Mardochée sur la place de la ville qui était devant la porte du roi.
7 And Mordecai told him all that had happened unto him, and of the fixed sum of money which Haman had promised to weigh out into the treasuries of the king for the Jews, to destroy them.
Et Mardochée l’informa de tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et de la somme d’argent qu’Haman avait dit qu’il paierait au trésor du roi en vue des Juifs, pour les détruire;
8 Also the copy of the writing of the law that had been given out in Shushan to destroy them he gave to him, to show it unto Esther, and to tell her [all], and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, and to make supplication unto him, and to present a request before him for her people.
et il lui donna une copie de l’écrit de l’édit qui avait été rendu à Suse pour les détruire, afin de le montrer à Esther et de le lui faire connaître, et pour lui commander d’entrer vers le roi, de le supplier et de faire requête devant lui en faveur de son peuple.
9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.
Et Hathac vint et rapporta à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.
10 And Esther said unto Hatach, and gave him a charge unto Mordecai,
Et Esther dit à Hathac et le chargea [de dire] à Mardochée:
11 All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that every one, whether man or woman, who should come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is but one law for him, to put him to death, except the one to whom the king should hold out the golden sceptre, for he will be suffered to live; but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
Tous les serviteurs du roi et le peuple des provinces du roi savent que pour quiconque, homme ou femme, entre auprès du roi, dans la cour intérieure, sans avoir été appelé, [il existe] une même loi [prescrivant] de le mettre à mort, à moins que le roi ne lui tende le sceptre d’or, pour qu’il vive; et moi, je n’ai pas été appelée à entrer vers le roi ces 30 jours.
12 And they told Mordecai the words of Esther.
Et on rapporta à Mardochée les paroles d’Esther.
13 Then said Mordecai to bring this answer back to Esther, Imagine not in thy soul to be able to escape in the king's house out of all the Jews.
Et Mardochée dit de répondre à Esther: Ne pense pas en ton âme d’échapper, dans la maison du roi, plutôt que tous les Juifs;
14 For if thou do indeed maintain silence at this time, enlargement and deliverance will arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house will perish: and who knoweth whether thou hast not for a time like this attained to the royal dignity?
car, si tu gardes le silence en ce temps-ci, le soulagement et la délivrance surgiront pour les Juifs d’autre part, mais toi et la maison de ton père vous périrez. Et qui sait si ce n’est pas pour un temps comme celui-ci que tu es parvenue à la royauté?
15 Then said Esther to bring this answer back to Mordecai,
Et Esther dit de répondre à Mardochée:
16 Go, assemble together all the Jews who are now present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, so that ye neither eat nor drink three days, either night or day; also I myself with my maidens will fast in like manner; and then will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law; and if I then perish, I perish.
Va, rassemble tous les Juifs qui se trouvent à Suse, et jeûnez pour moi, et ne mangez ni ne buvez pendant trois jours, ni la nuit, ni le jour; moi aussi, et mes jeunes filles, nous jeûnerons de même; et ainsi, j’entrerai vers le roi, ce qui n’est pas selon la loi; et si je péris, je périrai.
17 And Mordecai went about, and did in accordance with all that Esther had charged him.
Et Mardochée s’en alla et fit selon tout ce qu’Esther lui avait commandé.
