Ecclesiastes 4
1 And I turned about, and beheld all the oppressed that are made so under the sun: and, behold, there are the tears of the oppressed, and they have no comforter; and from the hand of their oppressors they suffer violence; and they have no comforter.
Et je revins à considérer toutes les oppressions qui ont lieu sous le soleil; et je vis les larmes des opprimés, et ils n'avaient point de consolateurs; et la violence qui venait de la main de leurs oppresseurs, et ils n'avaient point de consolateurs.
2 Thereupon praised I the dead that are already dead, more than the living who are still alive;
Alors je déclarai les morts, qui sont morts depuis longtemps, plus heureux que les vivants demeurés vivants jusques ici.
3 And as happier than both of them, him who hath not yet come into being, who hath not seen the evil-doing that is done under the sun.—
Mais plus heureux que les uns et les autres est celui qui n'est pas arrivé dans cette vie, et n'a pas été témoin des méchantes actions qui se font sous le soleil. –
4 Again, I beheld all the toil, and all the energy in doing, that it is [from] the envy of one man of his neighbor. Also this is vanity and a torture of the spirit.
Et je vis tout le labeur et tout le résultat de l'activité; c'était rivalité entre celui-ci et celui-là. Cela aussi est une vanité et un effort stérile. –
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
L'insensé tient ses bras croisés, et se consume lui-même.
6 Better is a handful of quiet, than both the hands full of toil and torture of spirit.
Mieux vaut le creux de la main rempli de repos, que deux pleines poignées de labeur et d'effort stérile. –
7 Then I turned about, and I saw a vanity under the sun.
Et je vis encore une vanité sous le soleil.
8 There is one alone, and he hath not a companion; yea, he hath neither son nor brother: yet is there no end to all his toil; his eye also is not satisfied with riches. Yet for whom do I toil, and deprive my soul of good? Also this is vanity, yea, it is a bad employment.
Cet homme est seul, et n'a pas un autre lui-même; il n'a ni fils, ni frère, et cependant son labeur est sans fin, et ses yeux n'ont jamais assez des richesses. Pour qui donc est-ce que je me peine, et sèvre mon âme du bonheur? C'est aussi là une vanité et une tâche ingrate.
9 Two are better than one; because they will have a good reward for their toil.
Deux valent mieux qu'un, car ils retirent un bon salaire de leur travail.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to the single one that falleth; for he hath no companion to lift him up.
En effet, s'ils tombent, l'un relève l'autre; mais malheur à celui qui est seul et qui tombe, et n'a pas un second pour le relever!
11 Also, if two lie together, then will they become warm; but how can one person alone become warm?
De même quand deux couchent ensemble, ils ont chaud; mais celui qui est seul, comment aurait-il chaud?
12 And if a man could overpower him, the single one, two would stand up against him: and a threefold cord cannot quickly be torn asunder.
Et si quelqu'un attaque l'un des deux, ils seront à deux pour lui tenir tête; et le triple cordon n'est pas vite rompu. –
13 Better is a poor and a wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth not how to be admonished any more.
Un enfant pauvre, mais sage, vaut mieux qu'un roi vieux et insensé qui ne sait plus être éclairé.
14 For out of the prison cometh the one to reign: whereas also in his kingdom the other becometh poor.
Car il sortit de la maison des prisonniers pour être roi, quoique né pauvre dans le royaume qui serait le sien.
15 I have seen all the living who walk under the sun, being with the second child that is to stand up in his stead.
Je vis tous les vivants qui se promènent sous le soleil escorter l'enfant, cet autre, qui succéda au trône:
16 There was no end to all the people, [belonging] to all that have been before them: they also that come after will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a torture of the spirit.—
tout le peuple, tous ceux à la tête desquels il était, ne finissaient pas; eh bien! les après-venants ne seront plus ravis de lui. C'est que cela aussi est une vanité et un effort stérile.
