Ecclesiastes 3
1 For every thing there is a season; and a [proper] time is for every pursuit under the heavens.
Alt har sin tid, og en tid er der satt for hvert foretagende under himmelen.
2 [There is] a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what hath been planted;
Å fødes har sin tid og å dø har sin tid, å plante har sin tid og å rykke op det som er plantet, har sin tid;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
å drepe har sin tid og å læge har sin tid; å rive ned har sin tid og å bygge op har sin tid;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
å gråte har sin tid og å le har sin tid; å klage har sin tid og å danse har sin tid;
5 A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather up stones; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embracing;
å kaste bort stener har sin tid og å samle stener har sin tid; å ta i favn har sin tid og å holde sig fra favntak har sin tid;
6 A time to seek, and a time to let things be lost; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
å søke har sin tid og å tape har sin tid; å gjemme har sin tid og å kaste bort har sin tid;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
å sønderrive har sin tid og å sy sammen har sin tid; å tie har sin tid og å tale har sin tid;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
å elske har sin tid og å hate har sin tid; krig har sin tid og fred har sin tid.
9 What profit hath [now] he that worketh in that wherein he toileth?
Hvad vinning har den som gjør noget, av det strev han har med det?
10 I have seen the employment, which God hath given to the sons of men to busy themselves therewith.
Jeg så den plage som Gud har gitt menneskenes barn å plage sig med.
11 Every thing hath he made beautiful in its [proper] time: he hath also placed the eternity in their heart, without a man's being able to find out the work that God hath made from the beginning to the end.
Alt har han gjort skjønt i sin tid; også evigheten har han lagt i deres hjerte, men således at mennesket ikke til fulle kan forstå det verk Gud har gjort, fra begynnelsen til enden.
12 I know that there is nothing good [inherent] in them, but for every one to rejoice and to do what is good during [all] his life.
Jeg skjønte at de intet annet gode har enn å glede sig og å gjøre sig til gode i livet;
13 For also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy what is good for all his toil, is likewise a gift of God.
men når et menneske, hvem det så er, får ete og drikke og unne sig gode dager til gjengjeld for alt sitt strev, så er også det en Guds gave.
14 I know that whatsoever God doth, that will be for ever; to it nothing can be added, and from it there is nothing to be diminished: and God hath so made it, that men should be afraid of him.
Jeg skjønte at alt hvad Gud gjør, det varer evig; intet kan legges til og intet kan tas fra. Så har Gud gjort det, forat vi skal frykte ham.
15 That which hath been hath long since appeared [again]; and what is to be hath already been; and God seeketh [again] that which is sped away.
Hvad der er, det var allerede før, og hvad der skal bli, det har også vært før; Gud søker frem igjen det forgangne.
16 And moreover I have seen under the sun, [that in] the place of justice, even there was wickedness; and [that in] the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness.
Fremdeles så jeg under solen at på dommersetet, der satt gudløsheten, og hvor rettferdighet skulde råde, der rådet gudløshet.
17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time for every pursuit; and on account of every deed there [will he judge].
Da sa jeg i mitt hjerte: Gud skal dømme den rettferdige så vel som den gudløse; for hos ham er det fastsatt en tid for hvert foretagende og for alt hvad som gjøres.
18 I said in my heart concerning the speaking of the sons of men, that God might make it clear to them, and that they might see that they by themselves are but beasts.
Jeg sa i mitt hjerte: Dette skjer for menneskenes barns skyld, forat Gud kan prøve dem, og forat de kan se at de i sig selv ikke er annet enn dyr;
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even the same thing befalleth them; as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one kind of spirit: so that the preeminence of man above the beast is nought; for all is vanity.
for det går menneskenes barn som det går dyrene; den samme skjebne rammer dem; som den ene dør, så dør den andre, og en livsånde har de alle; mennesket har ikke noget fortrin fremfor dyret; for alt er tomhet.
20 Every thing goeth unto one place: every thing came from the dust, and every thing returneth to the dust.
De farer alle til ett sted; de er alle blitt til av støvet, og de vender alle tilbake til støvet.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of the sons of man that ascendeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that descendeth downward to the earth?
Hvem vet om menneskenes ånd stiger op, og om dyrets ånd farer ned til jorden?
22 And so did I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion; for who can bring him to look with pleasure on what will be after him?
Og jeg så at intet er bedre for mennesket enn at han gleder sig ved sitt arbeid; for det er det gode som blir ham til del; for hvem lar ham få se det som skal komme efter ham?
