Ecclesiastes 3
1 For every thing there is a season; and a [proper] time is for every pursuit under the heavens.
II y a un temps pour tout, et chaque chose a son heure sous le ciel.
2 [There is] a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what hath been planted;
Il est un temps pour naître et un temps pour mourir, un temps pour planter et un temps pour déraciner ce qui était planté;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
un temps pour tuer et un temps pour guérir, un temps pour démolir et un temps pour bâtir;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
un temps pour pleurer et un temps pour rire, un temps pour se lamenter et un temps pour danser;
5 A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather up stones; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embracing;
un temps pour jeter des pierres et un temps pour ramasser des pierres, un temps pour embrasser et un temps pour repousser les caresses;
6 A time to seek, and a time to let things be lost; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
un temps pour chercher ce qui est perdu et un temps pour perdre, un temps pour conserver et un temps pour dissiper;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
un temps pour déchirer et un temps pour coudre, un temps pour se taire et un temps pour parler;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
un temps pour aimer et un temps pour haïr, un temps pour la guerre et un temps pour la paix.
9 What profit hath [now] he that worketh in that wherein he toileth?
Quel avantage tire le travailleur de la peine qu’il se donne?
10 I have seen the employment, which God hath given to the sons of men to busy themselves therewith.
J’Ai observé la besogne que Dieu a assignée aux fils d’Adam pour se fatiguer en efforts.
11 Every thing hath he made beautiful in its [proper] time: he hath also placed the eternity in their heart, without a man's being able to find out the work that God hath made from the beginning to the end.
Il a fait toute chose excellente à son heure; il a mis aussi dans le cœur de l’homme le sens de la durée, sans quoi celui-ci ne saisirait point l’œuvre accomplie par Dieu du commencement à la fin.
12 I know that there is nothing good [inherent] in them, but for every one to rejoice and to do what is good during [all] his life.
J’Ai reconnu qu’il n’y a pas de plus grand bien que de s’égayer et de se faire une vie heureuse.
13 For also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy what is good for all his toil, is likewise a gift of God.
Et toutes les fois que l’homme mange et boit, jouissant du bien-être qu’il doit à son labeur, c’est là un don de Dieu.
14 I know that whatsoever God doth, that will be for ever; to it nothing can be added, and from it there is nothing to be diminished: and God hath so made it, that men should be afraid of him.
J’Ai reconnu aussi que tout ce que Dieu fait restera ainsi éternellement: il n’y a rien à y ajouter, rien à en retrancher: Dieu a arrangé les choses de telle sorte qu’on le craigne.
15 That which hath been hath long since appeared [again]; and what is to be hath already been; and God seeketh [again] that which is sped away.
Ce qui existait dans le passé existe à présent; ce qui sera dans l’avenir a été antérieurement: Dieu veut la continuité.
16 And moreover I have seen under the sun, [that in] the place of justice, even there was wickedness; and [that in] the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness.
Voici encore ce que j’ai vu sous le soleil: dans l’enceinte de la justice domine l’iniquité; au siège du droit triomphe l’injustice.
17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time for every pursuit; and on account of every deed there [will he judge].
Aussi me suis-je dit à moi-même: "Le juste et le méchant, c’est Dieu qui les jugera; car il a fixé un temps pour chaque chose et pour chaque action."
18 I said in my heart concerning the speaking of the sons of men, that God might make it clear to them, and that they might see that they by themselves are but beasts.
Ensuite j’ai réfléchi à cette prétention des hommes d’être l’objet des préférences de Dieu, et j’ai vu que, considérés en eux-mêmes, ils sont comme les animaux.
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even the same thing befalleth them; as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one kind of spirit: so that the preeminence of man above the beast is nought; for all is vanity.
Car telle la destinée des fils d’Adam, telle la destinée des animaux; leur condition est la même, la mort des uns est comme la mort des autres; un même souffle les anime: la supériorité de l’homme sur l’animal est nulle, car tout est vanité.
20 Every thing goeth unto one place: every thing came from the dust, and every thing returneth to the dust.
Tout aboutit au même endroit: tout est venu de la poussière et tout retourne à la poussière.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of the sons of man that ascendeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that descendeth downward to the earth?
Qui peut savoir si le souffle des fils d’Adam monte en haut, tandis que le souffle des animaux descend en bas, vers la terre?
22 And so did I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion; for who can bring him to look with pleasure on what will be after him?
Par là je vois bien que le meilleur parti à prendre pour l’homme, c’est de se réjouir de ses œuvres, puisque c’est là son lot; car qui le ramènera un jour pour voir ce qui se passera après lui?
