Ecclesiastes 3
1 For every thing there is a season; and a [proper] time is for every pursuit under the heavens.
Il y a une saison pour toute chose, et un temps pour toute chose sous le ciel:
2 [There is] a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what hath been planted;
un temps pour naître, et un moment pour mourir; le moment de planter, et un temps pour arracher ce qui a été planté;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
un temps à tuer, et un temps de guérison; un moment pour se décomposer, et un temps pour se construire;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
un temps pour pleurer, et un temps pour rire; un temps de deuil, et un temps pour danser;
5 A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather up stones; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embracing;
un temps pour jeter les pierres, et un temps pour rassembler les pierres; un temps à embrasser, et un temps pour s'abstenir d'embrasser;
6 A time to seek, and a time to let things be lost; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
un temps à chercher, et un temps à perdre; un temps à conserver, et un temps pour s'en débarrasser;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
un temps à déchirer, et un temps pour coudre; un temps pour garder le silence, et un temps de parole;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
un temps pour aimer, et un temps pour la haine; un temps pour la guerre, et un temps pour la paix.
9 What profit hath [now] he that worketh in that wherein he toileth?
Quel profit a celui qui travaille dans ce qu'il peine?
10 I have seen the employment, which God hath given to the sons of men to busy themselves therewith.
J'ai vu le fardeau que Dieu a donné aux fils des hommes pour les accabler.
11 Every thing hath he made beautiful in its [proper] time: he hath also placed the eternity in their heart, without a man's being able to find out the work that God hath made from the beginning to the end.
Il a rendu chaque chose belle en son temps. Il a aussi mis l'éternité dans leur cœur, sans que l'homme puisse découvrir l'œuvre que Dieu a faite depuis le commencement jusqu'à la fin.
12 I know that there is nothing good [inherent] in them, but for every one to rejoice and to do what is good during [all] his life.
Je sais qu'il n'y a rien de mieux pour eux que de se réjouir et de faire le bien tant qu'ils vivent.
13 For also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy what is good for all his toil, is likewise a gift of God.
Aussi, que chacun mange et boive, et jouisse du bien dans tout son travail, c'est un don de Dieu.
14 I know that whatsoever God doth, that will be for ever; to it nothing can be added, and from it there is nothing to be diminished: and God hath so made it, that men should be afraid of him.
Je sais que tout ce que Dieu fait, c'est pour toujours. Rien ne peut y être ajouté, rien ne peut en être retranché; et Dieu a fait cela pour que les hommes craignent devant lui.
15 That which hath been hath long since appeared [again]; and what is to be hath already been; and God seeketh [again] that which is sped away.
Ce qui est a déjà été, et ce qui doit être a déjà été. Dieu cherche de nouveau ce qui est passé.
16 And moreover I have seen under the sun, [that in] the place of justice, even there was wickedness; and [that in] the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness.
J'ai vu sous le soleil que, dans le lieu de la justice, il y avait de la méchanceté, et dans le lieu de la justice, il y avait de la méchanceté.
17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time for every pursuit; and on account of every deed there [will he judge].
Je disais en mon cœur: « Dieu jugera les justes et les méchants, car il y a là un temps pour toute chose et pour toute œuvre. »
18 I said in my heart concerning the speaking of the sons of men, that God might make it clear to them, and that they might see that they by themselves are but beasts.
Je disais en mon cœur: « Quant aux fils des hommes, Dieu les éprouve, afin qu'ils voient qu'ils sont eux-mêmes comme des animaux.
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even the same thing befalleth them; as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one kind of spirit: so that the preeminence of man above the beast is nought; for all is vanity.
Car ce qui arrive aux fils des hommes arrive aux animaux. Il leur arrive même une chose. Comme l'un meurt, l'autre meurt aussi. Oui, ils ont tous le même souffle; et l'homme n'a aucun avantage sur les animaux, car tout est vanité.
20 Every thing goeth unto one place: every thing came from the dust, and every thing returneth to the dust.
Tous vont au même endroit. Tous sont issus de la poussière, et tous retournent à la poussière.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of the sons of man that ascendeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that descendeth downward to the earth?
Qui connaît l'esprit de l'homme, s'il monte vers le haut, et l'esprit de l'animal, s'il descend vers la terre? ".
22 And so did I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion; for who can bring him to look with pleasure on what will be after him?
C'est pourquoi j'ai vu qu'il n'y a rien de mieux que l'homme se réjouisse de ses œuvres, car c'est là sa part; car qui peut lui faire voir ce qui sera après lui?
