Deuteronomy 7
1 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Emorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations, greater in number and mightier than thou;
Cuando Yahvé vuestro Dios te introduzca en la tierra a la que vas a entrar para poseerla, y eche a muchas naciones delante de ti — los hititas, los gergeseos, los amorreos, los cananeos, los ferezeos, los heveos y los jebuseos- siete naciones más grandes y poderosas que tú;
2 And when the Lord thy God shall give them up before thee, and thou dost smite them: thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt not make any covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them.
y cuando Yahvé vuestro Dios las entregue delante de ti, y tú las golpees, entonces las derrotes por completo. No harás ningún pacto con ellos, ni te apiadarás de ellos.
3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughters shalt thou not give unto his son, and his daughter shalt thou not take unto thy son.
No harás matrimonios con ellos. No darás tu hija a su hijo, ni tomarás su hija para tu hijo.
4 For he would turn away thy son from following me, so that they might serve other gods; and the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy thee speedily.
Porque eso haría que tus hijos dejaran de seguirme, para servir a otros dioses. Entonces la ira del Señor se encenderá contra ustedes, y los destruiría rápidamente.
5 But thus shall ye do unto them: their altars shall ye pull down, and their statues shall ye break, and their groves shall ye cut down, and their graven images shall ye burn with fire.
Pero tú te encargarás de ellos de la siguiente manera: derribaréis sus altares, haréis pedazos sus columnas, cortaréis sus postes de Asera y quemareis sus imágenes grabadas con fuego.
6 For thou art a holy people unto the Lord thy God; of thee the Lord thy God hath made choice to be unto himself a special people, above all the nations that are upon the face of the earth.
Porque ustedes son un pueblo santo para el Señor, su Dios. El Señor, tu Dios, te ha elegido como pueblo propio, por encima de todos los pueblos que hay sobre la faz de la tierra.
7 Not because ye are more in number than all the nations, did the Lord desire you and make choice of you; for ye are the fewest of all the nations;
Yahvé no puso su amor en vosotros ni te eligió porque fueras más numeroso que cualquier otro pueblo, pues vosotros erais el más pequeño de todos los pueblos;
8 But on account of the love of the Lord for you, and because he keepeth the oath which he hath sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bond-men, out of the hand of Pharaoh the king of Egypt.
sino porque Yahvé os ama, y porque quiere cumplir el juramento que juró a vuestros padres, Yahvé os ha sacado con mano poderosa y os ha redimido de la casa de servidumbre, de la mano del faraón, rey de Egipto.
9 Know then that the Eternal thy God, is the God, the faithful God, who keepeth the covenant and the mercy with those that love him and with those that keep his commandments to the thousandth generation;
Sabed, pues, que el propio Yahvé, vuestro Dios, es Dios, el Dios fiel, que mantiene la alianza y la bondad amorosa hasta mil generaciones con los que le aman y guardan sus mandamientos,
10 And repayeth those that hate him to their face, to destroy them; he will not delay to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.
y devuelve su pago a los que le odian en la misma cara, destruyéndolos. No será indulgente con el que le odia. Se lo pagará en la cara.
11 Therefore shalt thou keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.
Por lo tanto, guardarás los mandamientos, los estatutos y las ordenanzas que hoy te ordeno, para ponerlos en práctica.
12 And it shall come to pass in reward for that ye will hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the Lord thy God will keep unto thee the covenant and the kindness which he hath sworn unto thy fathers:
Sucederá que, porque escuchas estas ordenanzas y las guardas y las pones en práctica, el Señor, tu Dios, mantendrá contigo el pacto y la misericordia que juró a tus padres.
13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; and he will bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thy oil, the increase of thy cattle, and the young of thy flocks, in the land which he hath sworn unto thy fathers to give unto thee.
Él te amará, te bendecirá y te multiplicará. También bendecirá el fruto de tu cuerpo y el fruto de tu tierra, tu grano y tu vino nuevo y tu aceite, el aumento de tu ganado y las crías de tu rebaño, en la tierra que juró a tus padres que te daría.
14 Blessed shalt thou be above all the nations; there shall not be a barren male or female among thee, nor among thy cattle.
Serás bendecido sobre todos los pueblos. No habrá macho ni hembra estéril entre vosotros, ni entre vuestros ganados.
15 And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness; and all the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, will he not put upon thee; but he will lay them upon all those that hate thee.
El Señor quitará de ti toda enfermedad; y no pondrá sobre ti ninguna de las malas enfermedades de Egipto, que tú conoces, sino que las pondrá sobre todos los que te odian.
16 And thou shalt consume all the nations which the Lord thy God giveth unto thee; thy eye shall not look with pity upon them: and thou shalt not serve their gods; for that would be a snare unto thee.
Consumirás a todos los pueblos que el Señor, tu Dios, te entregue. Tu ojo no se compadecerá de ellos. No servirás a sus dioses, porque eso sería una trampa para ti.
17 If thou shouldst say in thy heart, These nations are more numerous than I: how shall I be able to dispossess them?
Si dices en tu corazón: “Estas naciones son más que yo; ¿cómo podré despojarlas?”
18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them; [but] thou shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;
no les tendrás miedo. Recordarás bien lo que Yahvé vuestro Dios hizo al Faraón y a todo Egipto:
19 The great proofs which thy eyes have seen, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: in this wise will the Lord thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.
las grandes pruebas que vieron tus ojos, las señales, los prodigios, la mano poderosa y el brazo extendido con que Yahvé vuestro Dios te sacó. Así hará Yahvé vuestro Dios con todos los pueblos de los que tienes miedo.
20 Moreover the hornet will the Lord thy God send out against them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.
Además, Yahvé vuestro Dios enviará el avispero entre ellos, hasta que los que queden, y se escondan, perezcan ante ti.
21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them; for the Lord thy God is in the midst of thee, a mighty and terrible God.
No te asustarás de ellos, porque el Señor tu Dios está en medio de ti, un Dios grande y temible.
22 And the Lord thy God will chase out these nations before thee, little by little: thou shalt not be able to make an end of them speedily, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.
El Señor, tu Dios, expulsará a esas naciones ante ti poco a poco. No las consumirás de una sola vez, no sea que los animales del campo aumenten sobre ti.
23 And the Lord thy God will give them up before thee, and he will bring among them a mighty confusion, until they be destroyed.
Pero el Señor, tu Dios, las entregará delante de ti, y las confundirá con una gran confusión, hasta destruirlas.
24 And he will give their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under the heavens: no man shall be able to stand up before thee, until thou have destroyed them.
Entregará a sus reyes en tu mano, y harás que su nombre desaparezca de debajo del cielo. Nadie podrá presentarse ante ti hasta que los hayas destruido.
25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not covet the silver or gold that is on them, so that thou wouldst take it unto thyself, lest thou be ensnared thereby; for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.
Quemarás con fuego las imágenes grabadas de sus dioses. No codiciarás la plata ni el oro que hay en ellas, ni lo tomarás para ti, para que no quedes atrapado en él; porque es una abominación para Yahvé vuestro Dios.
26 And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, lest thou become accursed like it: thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is accursed.
No meterás una abominación en tu casa para que no seas anatema como ella. La aborrecerás por completo. La detestarás por completo, porque es anatema.
