Deuteronomy 7
1 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Emorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations, greater in number and mightier than thou;
Lorsque Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’aura fait entrer dans le pays dont tu vas prendre possession, et qu’il aura chassé devant toi beaucoup de nations, les Hittites, les Gergéséens, les Amorrhéens, les Chananéens, les Phéréséens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens, sept nations plus nombreuses et plus puissantes que toi,
2 And when the Lord thy God shall give them up before thee, and thou dost smite them: thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt not make any covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them.
et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te les aura livrées et que tu les auras battues, tu les dévoueras par anathème, tu ne concluras pas d’alliance avec elles et tu ne leur feras pas grâce.
3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughters shalt thou not give unto his son, and his daughter shalt thou not take unto thy son.
Tu ne contracteras pas de mariage avec elles, tu ne donneras pas tes filles à leurs fils, et tu ne prendras pas leurs filles pour tes fils;
4 For he would turn away thy son from following me, so that they might serve other gods; and the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy thee speedily.
car elles détourneraient de marcher après moi tes fils, qui serviraient d’autres dieux; la colère de Yahweh s’enflammerait contre vous, et il te détruirait promptement.
5 But thus shall ye do unto them: their altars shall ye pull down, and their statues shall ye break, and their groves shall ye cut down, and their graven images shall ye burn with fire.
Mais voici comment vous agirez à leur égard: Vous renverserez leurs autels, vous briserez leurs stèles, vous abattrez leurs aschérim et vous livrerez au feu leurs images taillées.
6 For thou art a holy people unto the Lord thy God; of thee the Lord thy God hath made choice to be unto himself a special people, above all the nations that are upon the face of the earth.
Car tu es un peuple saint à Yahweh, ton Dieu. Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a choisi pour être son peuple particulier, parmi tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre.
7 Not because ye are more in number than all the nations, did the Lord desire you and make choice of you; for ye are the fewest of all the nations;
Si Yahweh s’est attaché à vous et vous a choisis, ce n’est pas que vous surpassiez en nombre tous les peuples, car vous êtes le plus petit de tous les peuples.
8 But on account of the love of the Lord for you, and because he keepeth the oath which he hath sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bond-men, out of the hand of Pharaoh the king of Egypt.
Mais, parce que Yahweh vous aime et parce qu’il a voulu tenir le serment qu’il avait fait à vos pères, Yahweh vous a fait sortir par sa main puissante et vous a rachetés de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte.
9 Know then that the Eternal thy God, is the God, the faithful God, who keepeth the covenant and the mercy with those that love him and with those that keep his commandments to the thousandth generation;
Sache donc que c’est Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui est Dieu, le Dieu fidèle qui garde l’alliance et la miséricorde jusqu’à mille générations, pour ceux qui l’aiment et qui gardent ses commandements.
10 And repayeth those that hate him to their face, to destroy them; he will not delay to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.
Mais il rend la pareille en face à ceux qui le haïssent, en les faisant périr; il ne tarde pas à l’égard de celui qui le hait, et il lui rend la pareille en face.
11 Therefore shalt thou keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.
C’est pourquoi tu observeras les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que je te prescris aujourd’hui, en les mettant en pratique.
12 And it shall come to pass in reward for that ye will hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the Lord thy God will keep unto thee the covenant and the kindness which he hath sworn unto thy fathers:
Si vous écoutez ces ordonnances, si vous les gardez et les mettez en pratique, en retour Yahweh, ton Dieu, gardera envers toi l’alliance et la miséricorde qu’il a jurées à tes pères.
13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; and he will bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thy oil, the increase of thy cattle, and the young of thy flocks, in the land which he hath sworn unto thy fathers to give unto thee.
Il t’aimera, te bénira et te multipliera; il bénira le fruit de tes entrailles et le fruit de ton sol, ton blé, ton vin nouveau et ton huile, les portées de tes vaches et les petits de tes brebis, sur la terre qu’il a juré à tes pères de te donner.
14 Blessed shalt thou be above all the nations; there shall not be a barren male or female among thee, nor among thy cattle.
Tu seras béni plus que tous les peuples; il n’y aura chez toi ni homme ni femme stérile, ni bête stérile parmi tes troupeaux.
15 And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness; and all the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, will he not put upon thee; but he will lay them upon all those that hate thee.
Yahweh éloignera de toi toute maladie; il ne t’enverra aucune de ces affections malignes d’Égypte que tu connais; mais il en affligera tous ceux qui te haïssent.
16 And thou shalt consume all the nations which the Lord thy God giveth unto thee; thy eye shall not look with pity upon them: and thou shalt not serve their gods; for that would be a snare unto thee.
Tu dévoreras tous les peuples que Yahweh, ton Dieu, va te livrer; ton œil sera sans pitié pour eux, et tu ne serviras pas leurs dieux, car ce serait un piège pour toi.
17 If thou shouldst say in thy heart, These nations are more numerous than I: how shall I be able to dispossess them?
Que si tu dis dans ton cœur: « Ces nations sont plus nombreuses que moi; comment pourrai-je les chasser? »
18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them; [but] thou shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;
Ne les crains pas; rappelle à ton souvenir ce que Yahweh, ton Dieu, a fait à Pharaon et à toute l’Égypte:
19 The great proofs which thy eyes have seen, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: in this wise will the Lord thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.
les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, les miracles et les prodiges, la main forte et le bras étendu, par lesquels Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a fait sortir: ainsi fera Yahweh, ton Dieu, à tous les peuples dont tu as peur.
20 Moreover the hornet will the Lord thy God send out against them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, enverra même sur eux les frelons, jusqu’à ce que soient détruits ceux qui auront pu échapper et se cacher devant toi.
21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them; for the Lord thy God is in the midst of thee, a mighty and terrible God.
Tu ne t’effraieras pas à cause d’eux; car Yahweh, ton Dieu, est au milieu de toi, Dieu grand et terrible!
22 And the Lord thy God will chase out these nations before thee, little by little: thou shalt not be able to make an end of them speedily, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, chassera peu à peu ces nations devant toi; tu ne pourras pas les exterminer promptement, de peur que les bêtes sauvages ne se multiplient contre toi.
23 And the Lord thy God will give them up before thee, and he will bring among them a mighty confusion, until they be destroyed.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, te les livrera, et il jettera parmi elles une grande consternation, jusqu’à ce qu’elles soient détruites.
24 And he will give their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under the heavens: no man shall be able to stand up before thee, until thou have destroyed them.
Il livrera leurs rois entre tes mains et tu feras disparaître leurs noms de dessous les cieux; personne ne tiendra devant toi, jusqu’à ce que tu les aies détruits.
25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not covet the silver or gold that is on them, so that thou wouldst take it unto thyself, lest thou be ensnared thereby; for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.
Vous consumerez par le feu les images taillées de leurs dieux; tu ne convoiteras pas l’argent ou l’or qui est sur elles, et tu ne le prendras pas pour toi, de peur qu’il ne te soit un piège; car il est en abomination à Yahweh, ton Dieu.
26 And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, lest thou become accursed like it: thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is accursed.
Tu n’introduiras pas une chose abominable dans ta maison, afin que tu ne sois pas, comme elle, dévoué par anathème; tu l’auras en horreur extrême, tu l’auras en extrême abomination, car c’est une chose dévouée par anathème.
