Deuteronomy 20
1 When thou goest out to battle against thy enemies, and thou seest horse, and chariot, people more in number than thou: be not afraid of them; for the Lord thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Når du fer ut i strid mot fienden, og ser hestar og vogner og fleire herfolk enn du hev sjølv, so ver ikkje rædd deim! Herren, din Gud, er med deg, han som førde deg ut or Egyptarlandet.
2 And it shall be, when ye come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people;
Når de bur dykk til strid, skal presten stiga fram og tala til folket
3 And he shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye come nigh this day unto the battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and be not downcast, and do not tremble because of them:
og segja til deim: «Høyr, Israel, i dag bur de dykk til strid mot fienden! Tap ikkje modet! Ver ikkje rædde eller hugfalne eller forstøkte!
4 For the Lord your God it is who goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to help you.
For Herren, dykkar Gud, gjeng med dykk, og vil strida for dykk mot fienden og hjelpa dykk.»
5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there who hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
So skal formennerne tala til folket og segja: «Er her nokon som hev bygt seg nytt hus, men endå ikkje vigsla det, då kann han fara heim att, so han ikkje skal falla i striden og ein annan vigsla huset.
6 And what man is there who hath planted a vineyard, and hath not redeemed it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man redeem it.
Og er her nokon som hev stelt seg til ein vinhage, men endå ikkje havt noko gagn av honom, då kann han fara heim att, so han ikkje skal falla i striden og ein annan hausta hagen.
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Og er her nokon som hev fest seg ei brur, men endå ikkje halde brudlaup, då kann han fara heim att, so han ikkje skal falla i striden og ein annan få bruri.»
8 And the officers shall speak yet farther unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, that the heart of his brethren become not as faint as his heart.
Dette skal og formennerne segja til folket: «Er her nokon som er rædd og hugfallen, då kann han fara heim att, so ikkje brørne hans skal missa modet liksom han.»
9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of the armies at the head of the people.
Og når formennerne er ferdige med det dei hev å segja til folket, skal de setja hovdingar yver heren.
10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to make war against it, then summon it with words of peace.
Når du gjeng fram mot ein by og vil taka honom, skal du fyrst bjoda fred.
11 And it shall be, if it make thee an answer of peace, and open [its gates] unto thee: then shall it be, that all the people that are found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
Tek dei då imot tilbodet, og opnar portarne for deg, so skal alt folket i byen vera dine tenarar og arbeida for deg.
12 But if it will not make peace with thee, and wageth war against thee; then shalt thou besiege it;
Vil dei ikkje gjera fred, men vil stridast med deg, so skal du kringsetja byen;
13 And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thy hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;
og når Herren, din Gud, gjev honom i dine hender, skal du hogga ned alle karmenner;
14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that may be in the city, all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take as booty unto thyself; and thou shalt enjoy the spoil of thy enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.
men kvinnor og born og bufe og alt anna som finst i byen, alt herfanget, kann du eigna til deg; du kann nøyta herfanget du tek frå fiendarne, og som Herren, din Gud, hev gjeve deg.
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
Soleis skal du gjera med alle byar som ligg langt burte, og ikkje høyrer desse folki til.
16 But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, shalt thou not let live a single soul.
Men i dei byarne som høyrer desse folki til, og som Herren, din Gud, gjev deg til odel og eiga, der skal du ikkje spara eit einaste liv.
17 But thou shalt utterly devote them; namely, the Hittites, and the Emorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee;
Du skal bannstøyta deim og rydja deim ut, både hetitarne og amoritarne og kananitarne og perizitarne og hevitarne og jebusitarne, soleis som Herren, din Gud, hev sagt deg;
18 In order that they may not teach you to do in accordance with all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; and ye would thus sin against the Lord your God.
elles kunde dei læra dykk å gjera alt det stygge dei sjølve gjer til æra for gudarne sine, og då vilde de synda mot Herren, dykkar Gud.
19 When thou besiegest a city a long time, to make war against it to capture it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them; for of them thou mayest eat, and thou shalt not cut them down, [for man liveth of the trees of the field, ] to employ them in thy siege;
Når du hev kringsett ein by og lyt liggja der lenge fyrr du fær teke honom, so skal du ikkje skamføra trei som veks der, og setja øks i deim. Du kann eta av deim, men du skal ikkje skadehogga deim. Trei på marki er då ikkje folk, so du tarv stridast med deim?
20 Only those trees of which thou knowest that they are not fruit-trees, thou mayest destroy and cut down; and [thus] thou canst build bulwarks against the city that wageth war with thee, until it be subdued.
Men dei trei som du veit ikkje ber etande frukt, deim kann du øyda og hogga ned, og byggja kringsetjingsverk mot byen du ligg i strid med, til han lyt gjeva seg.
