Deuteronomy 20
1 When thou goest out to battle against thy enemies, and thou seest horse, and chariot, people more in number than thou: be not afraid of them; for the Lord thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Όταν εξέλθης εις μάχην εναντίον των εχθρών σου, και ίδης ίππους και αμάξας, λαόν περισσότερον παρά σε, μη φοβηθής αυτούς· διότι Κύριος ο Θεός σου είναι μετά σου, όστις σε ανεβίβασεν εκ γης Αιγύπτου.
2 And it shall be, when ye come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people;
Και όταν πλησιάσητε εις την μάχην, ο ιερεύς θέλει προσέλθει και λαλήσει προς τον λαόν,
3 And he shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye come nigh this day unto the battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and be not downcast, and do not tremble because of them:
και θέλει ειπεί προς αυτούς, Άκουε, Ισραήλ· σεις πλησιάζετε σήμερον εις την μάχην κατά των εχθρών σας· ας μη δειλιάση η καρδία σας, μη φοβηθήτε μηδέ τρομάξητε μηδέ εκπλαγήτε από προσώπου αυτών·
4 For the Lord your God it is who goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to help you.
διότι Κύριος ο Θεός σας είναι ο προπορευόμενος μεθ' υμών, διά να πολεμήση υπέρ υμών εναντίον των εχθρών σας, διά να σώση υμάς.
5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there who hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
Και οι άρχοντες θέλουσι λαλήσει προς τον λαόν, λέγοντες, Τις άνθρωπος ωκοδόμησεν οικίαν νέαν και δεν έκαμεν εγκαινιασμόν αυτής; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, μήποτε αποθάνη εν τη μάχη και εγκαινιάση αυτήν άλλος άνθρωπος.
6 And what man is there who hath planted a vineyard, and hath not redeemed it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man redeem it.
Και τις άνθρωπος εφύτευσεν αμπελώνα και δεν ευφράνθη εξ αυτού; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, μήποτε αποθάνη εν τη μάχη, και ευφρανθή εξ αυτού άλλος άνθρωπος.
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Και τις άνθρωπος ηρραβωνίσθη γυναίκα και δεν έλαβεν αυτήν; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, μήποτε αποθάνη εν τη μάχη, και λάβη αυτήν άλλος άνθρωπος.
8 And the officers shall speak yet farther unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, that the heart of his brethren become not as faint as his heart.
Και οι άρχοντες θέλουσι λαλήσει έτι προς τον λαόν και θέλουσιν ειπεί, Τις άνθρωπος είναι δειλός και άκαρδος; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, διά να μη δειλιάση η καρδία των αδελφών αυτού, ως η καρδία αυτού.
9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of the armies at the head of the people.
Και αφού τελειώσωσιν οι άρχοντες λαλούντες προς τον λαόν, θέλουσι καταστήσει αρχηγούς των στρατευμάτων, διά να προΐστανται του λαού.
10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to make war against it, then summon it with words of peace.
Όταν πλησιάσης εις πόλιν διά να εκπολεμήσης αυτήν, τότε κάλεσον αυτήν εις ειρήνην·
11 And it shall be, if it make thee an answer of peace, and open [its gates] unto thee: then shall it be, that all the people that are found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
και εάν σοι αποκριθή ειρηνικά και ανοίξη εις σε, τότε πας ο λαός ο ευρισκόμενος εν αυτή θέλει γείνει υποτελής εις σε και θέλει σε δουλεύει·
12 But if it will not make peace with thee, and wageth war against thee; then shalt thou besiege it;
εάν όμως δεν κάμη ειρήνην μετά σου, αλλά σε πολεμήση τότε θέλεις πολιορκήσει αυτήν·
13 And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thy hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;
και αφού Κύριος ο Θεός σου παραδώση αυτήν εις τας χείρας σου, θέλεις πατάξει πάντα τα αρσενικά αυτής εν στόματι μαχαίρας·
14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that may be in the city, all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take as booty unto thyself; and thou shalt enjoy the spoil of thy enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.
τας δε γυναίκας και τα βρέφη και τα κτήνη και πάντα όσα ευρίσκονται εν τη πόλει, πάντα τα λάφυρα αυτής, θέλεις λάβει εις σεαυτόν· και θέλεις τρώγει τα λάφυρα των εχθρών σου, όσα Κύριος ο Θεός σου έδωκεν εις σε.
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
Ούτω θέλεις κάμει εις πάσας τας πόλεις τας πολύ μακράν από σου, αίτινες δεν είναι εκ των πόλεων των εθνών τούτων·
16 But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, shalt thou not let live a single soul.
εκ των πόλεων όμως των λαών τούτων, τας οποίας Κύριος ο Θεός σου δίδει εις σε κληρονομίαν, δεν θέλεις αφήσει ζων ουδέν έχον πνοήν·
17 But thou shalt utterly devote them; namely, the Hittites, and the Emorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee;
αλλά θέλεις εξολοθρεύσει αυτούς κατά κράτος, τους Χετταίους και τους Αμορραίους τους Χαναναίους και τους Φερεζαίους τους Ευαίους και τους Ιεβουσαίους, καθώς προσέταξεν εις σε Κύριος ο Θεός σου·
18 In order that they may not teach you to do in accordance with all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; and ye would thus sin against the Lord your God.
διά να μη σας διδάξωσι να πράττητε κατά πάντα τα βδελύγματα αυτών, τα οποία έκαμον εις τους θεούς αυτών, και αμαρτήσητε εναντίον Κυρίου του Θεού σας.
19 When thou besiegest a city a long time, to make war against it to capture it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them; for of them thou mayest eat, and thou shalt not cut them down, [for man liveth of the trees of the field, ] to employ them in thy siege;
Όταν πολιορκής πόλιν τινά ημέρας πολλάς, πολεμών αυτήν διά να εξουσιάσης αυτήν, δεν θέλεις εξολοθρεύσει τα δένδρα αυτής, καταφέρων επ' αυτά πέλεκυν· διότι εξ αυτών δύνασαι να τρέφησαι και δεν θέλεις κόψει αυτά. Μήπως είναι άνθρωπος το δένδρον του αγρού, ώστε να έλθη εναντίον σου εν τη πολιορκία;
20 Only those trees of which thou knowest that they are not fruit-trees, thou mayest destroy and cut down; and [thus] thou canst build bulwarks against the city that wageth war with thee, until it be subdued.
Μόνον τα δένδρα, όσα γνωρίζεις ότι δεν είναι δένδρα τροφής, ταύτα θέλεις εξολοθρεύσει και εκκόψει και θέλεις οικοδομήσει περιχαρακώματα εναντίον της πόλεως, ήτις πολεμεί προς σε, εωσού παραδοθή.
