Deuteronomy 2
1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord had spoken unto me: and we traveled around mount Seir many days.
Nous nous tournâmes, et nous partîmes pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme l’Éternel me l’avait ordonné; nous suivîmes longtemps les contours de la montagne de Séir.
2 And the Lord said unto me, as followeth,
L’Éternel me dit:
3 Ye have traveled long enough around this mountain; turn yourselves northward.
Vous avez assez suivi les contours de cette montagne. Tournez-vous vers le nord.
4 And the people command thou, saying, Ye are passing by the border of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; therefore take ye good heed unto yourselves;
Donne cet ordre au peuple: Vous allez passer à la frontière de vos frères, les enfants d’Ésaü, qui habitent en Séir. Ils vous craindront; mais soyez bien sur vos gardes.
5 Do not contend with them; for I will not give unto you of their land, even so much as a foot's breadth; because unto Esau have I given mount Seir for an inheritance.
Ne les attaquez pas; car je ne vous donnerai dans leur pays pas même de quoi poser la plante du pied: j’ai donné la montagne de Séir en propriété à Ésaü.
6 Food shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may eat; and water also shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may drink.
Vous achèterez d’eux à prix d’argent la nourriture que vous mangerez, et vous achèterez d’eux à prix d’argent même l’eau que vous boirez.
7 For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand; he hath provided for thy wandering through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
Car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a béni dans tout le travail de tes mains, il a connu ta marche dans ce grand désert. Voilà quarante années que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est avec toi: tu n’as manqué de rien.
8 And we passed away from our brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way through the plain, from Elath, and from 'Ezyon-gaber. And we turned and passed the way of the wilderness of Moab.
Nous passâmes à distance de nos frères, les enfants d’Ésaü, qui habitent en Séir, et à distance du chemin de la plaine, d’Élath et d’Étsjon-Guéber, puis nous nous tournâmes, et nous prîmes la direction du désert de Moab.
9 And the Lord said unto me, Do not attack the Moabites, nor contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee from their land any inheritance, because unto the children of Lot have I given 'Ar for an inheritance.
L’Éternel me dit: N’attaque pas Moab, et ne t’engage pas dans un combat avec lui; car je ne te donnerai rien à posséder dans son pays: c’est aux enfants de Lot que j’ai donné Ar en propriété.
10 The Emim in times past dwelt therein, a people great, and numerous, and tall as the 'Anakim;
(Les Émim y habitaient auparavant; c’était un peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakim.
11 As Rephaim were also they accounted, equally with the 'Anakim; and the Moabites called the[[m]] Emim.
Ils passaient aussi pour être des Rephaïm, de même que les Anakim; mais les Moabites les appelaient Émim.
12 And in Seir dwelt the Chorim in times past; but the children of Esau drove them out, and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel hath done unto the land of his inheritance, which the Lord hath given unto them.
Séir était habité autrefois par les Horiens; les enfants d’Ésaü les chassèrent, les détruisirent devant eux, et s’établirent à leur place, comme l’a fait Israël dans le pays qu’il possède et que l’Éternel lui a donné.)
13 Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered; and we passed over the brook Zered.
Maintenant levez-vous, et passez le torrent de Zéred. Nous passâmes le torrent de Zéred.
14 And the time which we came from Kadesh-barnea', until we had passed over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were spent from out the midst of the camp, as the Lord had sworn unto them.
Le temps que durèrent nos marches de Kadès-Barnéa au passage du torrent de Zéred fut de trente-huit ans, jusqu’à ce que toute la génération des hommes de guerre eût disparu du milieu du camp, comme l’Éternel le leur avait juré.
15 And also the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp; until they were spent.
La main de l’Éternel fut aussi sur eux pour les détruire du milieu du camp, jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent disparu.
16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were spent by, dying from the midst of the people,
Lorsque tous les hommes de guerre eurent disparu par la mort du milieu du peuple,
17 That the Lord spoke unto me, saying,
l’Éternel me parla, et dit:
18 Thou art passing this day by the border of Moab, by 'Ar,
Tu passeras aujourd’hui la frontière de Moab, à Ar,
19 And thou comest nigh opposite the children of 'Ammon: do not attack them, nor contend with them; for I will not give unto thee of the land of the children of 'Ammon any inheritance; because unto the children of Lot have I given it for an inheritance.
et tu approcheras des enfants d’Ammon. Ne les attaque pas, et ne t’engage pas dans un combat avec eux; car je ne te donnerai rien à posséder dans le pays des enfants d’Ammon: c’est aux enfants de Lot que je l’ai donné en propriété.
20 As the land of Rephaim was it also accounted: Rephaim dwelt therein in times past; and the 'Ammonites called them Zamzummim;
(Ce pays passait aussi pour un pays de Rephaïm; des Rephaïm y habitaient auparavant, et les Ammonites les appelaient Zamzummim:
21 A people great, and numerous, and tall, as the 'Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they drove them out, and dwelt in their stead:
c’était un peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakim. L’Éternel les détruisit devant les Ammonites, qui les chassèrent et s’établirent à leur place.
22 As he hath done to the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from before whom he destroyed the Chorim; and they drove them out and dwelt in their stead, even unto this day.
C’est ainsi que fit l’Éternel pour les enfants d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séir, quand il détruisit les Horiens devant eux; ils les chassèrent et s’établirent à leur place, jusqu’à ce jour.
23 And the 'Avvim, who dwelt in open towns, as far as unto Gazzah, —the Caphtorim, who came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.
Les Avviens, qui habitaient dans des villages jusqu’à Gaza, furent détruits par les Caphtorim, sortis de Caphtor, qui s’établirent à leur place.)
24 Rise ye up, set forward, and pass over the brook Arnon; behold I have given into thy hand Sichon the king of Cheshbon, the Emorite, and his land: begin to drive him out, and contend with him in battle.
Levez-vous, partez, et passez le torrent de l’Arnon. Vois, je livre entre tes mains Sihon, roi de Hesbon, l’Amoréen et son pays. Commence la conquête, fais-lui la guerre!
25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven; whoever will hear the report of thee, shall tremble, and shall quake because of thee.
Je vais répandre dès aujourd’hui la frayeur et la crainte de toi sur tous les peuples qui sont sous le ciel; et, au bruit de ta renommée, ils trembleront et seront saisis d’angoisse à cause de toi.
26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, with words of peace, saying,
J’envoyai, du désert de Kedémoth, des messagers à Sihon, roi de Hesbon, avec des paroles de paix. Je lui fis dire:
27 Let me pass through thy land: always by the highway will I go along; I will not turn unto the right hand or unto the left.
Laisse-moi passer par ton pays; je suivrai la grande route, sans m’écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.
28 Food shalt thou sell me for money, that I may eat; and water for money shalt thou give me, that I may drink: only let me pass through on foot;
Tu me vendras à prix d’argent la nourriture que je mangerai, et tu me donneras à prix d’argent l’eau que je boirai; je ne ferai que passer avec mes pieds.
29 (As the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in 'Ar, have done unto me: ) until that I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.
C’est ce que m’ont accordé les enfants d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séir, et les Moabites qui demeurent à Ar. Accorde-le aussi, jusqu’à ce que je passe le Jourdain pour entrer au pays que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
30 But Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, would not suffer our passing by him; for the Lord thy God had hardened his spirit, and had made obstinate his heart, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as [hath happened] this day.
Mais Sihon, roi de Hesbon, ne voulut point nous laisser passer chez lui; car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, rendit son esprit inflexible et endurcit son cœur, afin de le livrer entre tes mains, comme tu le vois aujourd’hui.
31 And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give up Sichon and his land before thee: begin to drive him out, that thou mayest inherit his land.
L’Éternel me dit: Vois, je te livre dès maintenant Sihon et son pays.
32 And Sichon came out against us, he and all his people, to the battle at Yahaz.
Sihon sortit à notre rencontre, avec tout son peuple, pour nous combattre à Jahats.
33 And the Lord our God gave him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
L’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous le livra, et nous le battîmes, lui et ses fils, et tout son peuple.
34 And we conquered all his cities at that time, and devoted every inhabited city, and the women, and the little ones; we left none that escaped.
Nous prîmes alors toutes ses villes, et nous les dévouâmes par interdit, hommes, femmes et petits enfants, sans en laisser échapper un seul.
35 Only the cattle we took as booty unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.
Seulement, nous pillâmes pour nous le bétail et le butin des villes que nous avions prises.
36 From 'Aro'er, which is by the bank of the brook of Arnon, and the city that is in the brook, even unto Gil'ad, there was not one city which was too strong for us; the whole did the Lord our God give up before us.
Depuis Aroër sur les bords du torrent de l’Arnon, et la ville qui est dans la vallée, jusqu’à Galaad, il n’y eut pas de ville trop forte pour nous: l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous livra tout.
37 Only unto the land of the children of 'Ammon didst thou not come nigh, unto the whole margin of the brook Yabbok, and the cities in the mountain, and unto whatsoever the Lord our God had forbidden us.
Mais tu n’approchas point du pays des enfants d’Ammon, de tous les bords du torrent de Jabbok, des villes de la montagne, de tous les lieux que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, t’avait défendu d’attaquer.
