Daniel 1
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoyakim the king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
En la troisième année du règne de Joakim, roi de Juda, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, vint à Jérusalem, et il l'investit.
2 And the Lord gave up into his hand Yehoyakim the king of Judah, with part of the vessels of the house of God: and he brought them into the land of Shin'ar into the house of his god, namely, he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.
Et le Seigneur lui livra le roi Joakim avec une partie des vases du temple de Dieu, et il emporta ces vases en la terre de Sennaar, où était le temple de son dieu, et il les déposa dans la maison du trésor de son dieu.
3 And the king said unto Ashpenas, the chief of his eunuchs, that he should bring out of the children of Israel, and of the royal seed, and of the nobles,
Et le roi dit à Asphanez, chef de ses eunuques, de lui amener quelques-uns des fils des captifs d'Israël de la race royale et des princes,
4 [Certain] lads in whom there should be no kind of blemish, but who should be handsome in appearance, and intelligent in all wisdom, and acquainted with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as should have the ability to serve in the king's palace, and that these should be taught the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.
Jeunes gens sans infirmité, beaux de formes, initiés à toute sagesse, savants, doués de prudence et dignes d'habiter le palais en présence du roi, et il lui ordonna de les instruire dans la langue et les lettres des Chaldéens.
5 And the king ordered for them a daily provision for its day of the king's food, and of the wine which he drank, and to educate them three years, so that at the end thereof they should serve before the king.
Et le roi ordonna que chaque jour on les nourrit durant trois ans des mets de sa table royale, et du vin dont lui-même buvait, et qu'ensuite ils se tinssent en présence du roi.
6 Now there were among these of the children of Judah, Daniel, Chananyah, Mishael, and 'Azaryah.
Et parmi eux se trouvèrent des fils de Juda, Daniel, Ananias, Azarias et Misaël.
7 And the chief of the eunuchs assigned them names; and he assigned to Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Chananyah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to 'Azaryah, of 'Abed-nego.
Et le chef des eunuques leur donna des noms: il appela Daniel Baltasar, et Ananias Sidrach, et Misaël Misach, et Azarias Abdénago.
8 But Daniel resolved in his heart that he would not defile himself with the food of the king, nor with the wine which he drank: and therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not need to defile himself.
Mais Daniel eut à cœur de ne point se souiller des mets de la table du roi, ni du vin dont il faisait usage, et il pria le chef des eunuques de lui permettre de ne s'en point souiller.
9 And God gave Daniel kindness and mercy before the chief of the eunuchs.
Et Dieu accorda que Daniel obtînt les bonnes grâces et la compassion du chef des eunuques.
10 And the chief of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath ordered your food and your drink; for why should he see your face sadder looking than that of the lads who are of your age? and ye would thus endanger my head with the king.
Et le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel: J'ai peur que le roi, mon maître, après m'avoir donné des ordres pour vos aliments et votre breuvage, ne vous voie peut-être mauvais visage, en comparaison des jeunes gens de votre âge; et vous me feriez condamner à mort par le roi.
11 Then said Daniel to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had given charge over Daniel, Chananyah, Mishael, and 'Azaryah,
Et Daniel dit à Amelsad, à qui le chef des eunuques avait confié la garde de Daniel, d'Ananias, de Misaël et d'Azarias:
12 Prove, I beseech thee, thy servants, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink;
Éprouve tes serviteurs pendant dix jours, et fais nous donner quelques graines que nous mangerons; et nous boirons de l'eau.
13 And then let our countenances be looked at before thee, and the countenance of the lads that eat the food of the king: and as thou mayest see [fitting], so deal with thy servants.
Puis regarde notre visage et le visage des jeunes gens qui se seront nourris de la table du roi; et selon ce que tu auras vu, agis à l'égard de tes serviteurs.
14 And he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
Et il les exauça, et il les éprouva pendant dix jours.
15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared better and fuller in flesh than [that of] all the lads who ate the food of the king.
Et au bout des dix jours il fut reconnu qu'ils avaient le visage meilleur et les chairs plus fermes que les jeunes gens nourris de la table du roi.
16 And the steward took away their [apportioned] food, and the wine that they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.
Alors Amelsad prit pour lui leurs mets et leur vin, et il leur donna des graines.
17 But as regardeth all these four lads, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
Et Dieu doua ces quatre jeunes gens de l'intelligence et du savoir, dans tous les exercices; de la sagesse et des lettres; et Daniel sut interpréter les visions et les songes.
18 And at the end of the days [after] which the king had said that they should be presented, the chief of the eunuchs presented them before Nebuchadnezzar.
Et à la fin des jours que le roi avait fixés pour qu'on les lui amenât, le chef des eunuques les introduisit devant Nabuchodonosor.
19 And the king spoke with them; and there was not found among them all any one like Daniel, Chananyah, Mishael, and 'Azaryah: and so they served before the king.
Et le roi leur parla, et, parmi tous ces jeunes gens, il ne s'en trouva point de comparables à Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias; et ils demeurèrent en présence du roi.
20 And in every matter of wise understanding, which the king required of them, he found them ten times superior above all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his kingdom.
Et dans toutes les questions de sagesse et de science sur lesquelles le roi les interrogea, il les reconnut dix fois plus habiles que les devins et les mages qui étaient en tout son royaume.
21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
Et Daniel vécut ainsi jusqu'à la première année du règne de Cyrus.
