Daniel 5
1 King Belshazzar prepared a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and before these thousand did he drink wine.
Le roi Belschazar donna un grand festin à ses mille grands, et il but du vin en présence de ces mille personnes.
2 Belshazzar ordered, through the counsel of the wine, to bring in the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken away out of the temple which was in Jerusalem: that the king, and his lords, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therefrom.
Belschazar, animé par le vin, dit qu'on apportât les vases d'or et d'argent que Nébucadnézar, son père, avait enlevés du temple de Jérusalem, pour que le roi et ses grands, ses femmes et ses concubines bussent dans ces vases.
3 Then they brought in the golden vessels that were taken away out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his lords, his wives, and his concubines, drank from them.
Alors on apporta les vases d'or qui avaient été enlevés du temple de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et le roi et ses grands, ses femmes et ses concubines burent dans ces vases.
4 They drank wine, and praised their gods of gold, and of silver, of copper, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
Ils burent du vin et chantèrent des louanges à leurs dieux d'or et d'argent, d'airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre.
5 At that same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote opposite to the chandelier upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
Dans ce moment même les doigts d'une main d'homme s'avancèrent, et écrivirent, vis-à-vis du lustre, sur la chaux de la muraille du palais du roi, et le roi vit la main qui écrivait.
6 Then was the king's color changed, and his thoughts troubled him: so that the bands of his loins were loosed, and his knees knocked one against the other.
Aussitôt le roi changea de couleur, et ses pensées le troublèrent, et les nerfs de ses reins se détendirent, et ses genoux s'entre-heurtèrent.
7 the king called with might to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king commenced, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whatsoever man will read this writing, and tell me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall rule as the third in the kingdom.
Le roi s'écria avec force qu'on mandât les devins, les Chaldéens et les mages. Le roi prit la parole et dit aux sages de Babel: Tout homme qui lira ces caractères, et m'en expliquera la signification, sera revêtu de la pourpre, et d'une chaîne d'or à son cou, et occupera la troisième place dans le gouvernement de mon empire.
8 Then came in all the wise men of the king; but they were not able to read the writing, nor to make its interpretation known to the king.
Puis tous les sages du roi furent introduits; mais ils ne purent ni lire les caractères, ni en indiquer au roi la signification.
9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly terrified, and his color was changed on him, and his lords were confounded.
Alors le roi Belschazar fut extrêmement troublé, et il changea de couleur, et ses grands furent interdits.
10 [Now] the queen in consequence of the words of the king and of his lords came into the banquet-house; the queen commenced and said, O king, live for ever; let thy thoughts not trouble thee, nor let thy color be changed:
Dans cette situation du roi et des grands, la reine parut dans la salle du festin. La reine prit la parole et dit: O roi! puisses-tu vivre éternellement! que tes pensées ne te troublent pas, et ne change pas de couleur!
11 There is a man in thy kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father enlightenment and intelligence and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him: and king Nebuchadnezzar thy father appointed him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers: —yes, thy father, O king.—
Il est dans ton royaume un homme en qui est l'esprit des dieux saints, et du temps de ton père en lui s'est trouvée une lumière, une intelligence, une sagesse pareille à la sagesse des dieux; et le roi Nébucadnézar, ton père, ton père, ô roi, l'a établi chef des devins, des enchanteurs, des Chaldéens, des mages,
12 Forasmuch as a superior spirit, and knowledge, and intelligence, interpreting of dreams, and solving of riddles, and of untying knotty [doubts], were found in him, in Daniel, to whom the king assigned the name of Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will tell the interpretation.
parce qu'un esprit éminent, et la connaissance et l'entente de l'interprétation des songes, et de l'explication des énigmes et de la solution des questions difficiles s'étaient rencontrées en lui, savoir, en Daniel, dont le roi avait changé le nom en celui de Beltsazar; que Daniel soit donc mandé, et il te donnera l'explication.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king: the king commenced and said unto Daniel, Art thou Daniel, who art of the children of the exiles of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?
Alors Daniel fut introduit devant le roi. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel: Es-tu ce Daniel, l'un des captifs Juifs que le roi, mon père, a amenés de Juda?
14 And I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that enlightenment and intelligence and superior wisdom are found in thee.
J'ai ouï dire de toi que l'esprit des dieux est en toi, et qu'on trouve en toi et lumière, et intelligence, et sagesse éminente.
15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, had been brought before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me its interpretation; but they were not able to tell the interpretation of the matter.
Or les sages et les devins ont été amenés devant moi pour lire ces caractères et m'en découvrir le sens, mais ils ne peuvent m'expliquer le sens de la chose.
16 But I have truly heard concerning thee, that thou art able to give interpretations, and untie knotty [doubts]: now if thou art able to read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, thou shalt be clothed with purple, with a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt rule as the third in the kingdom.
Mais j'ai ouï dire de toi que tu sais donner les explications, et résoudre les questions difficiles; si donc tu peux lire ces caractères, et m'en faire connaître le sens, tu seras revêtu de la pourpre, et tu auras une chaîne d'or à ton cou, et tu occuperas la troisième place dans mon empire.
17 Then answered Daniel and said before the king, Let thy gifts remain in thy possession, and bestow thy bounty on another: nevertheless will I read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
Alors Daniel répondit et dit en présence du roi: Garde tes dons, et fais tes largesses à un autre! Cependant je lirai les caractères au roi, et je lui en indiquerai le sens.
18 O thou king! the most high God gave kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and honor unto Nebuchadnezzar thy father;
O roi, le Dieu très haut accorda à Nébucadnézar, ton père, royauté et grandeur, et gloire et magnificence;
19 And because of the greatness that he had given unto him, all people, nations, and languages trembled and shook before him: whom he pleased he slew; and whom he pleased he kept alive; and whom he pleased he lifted up; and whom he pleased he brought low.
et à cause de la grandeur qu'il lui avait donnée, les peuples, les nations et les hommes de toute langue étaient tous craintifs et tremblants devant lui; il faisait mourir qui il voulait, et donnait la vie à qui il voulait, et il élevait qui il voulait, et il abaissait qui il voulait.
20 But, when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit hardened to deal presumptuously, he was cast down from the throne of his kingdom, and his dignity did they take from him;
Mais comme son cœur s'éleva, et que son esprit s'enorgueillit jusqu'à l'insolence, il fut précipité de son trône royal, et sa gloire lui fut ôtée;
21 And from the sons of men was he driven forth, and his heart became equal with [that of] the beasts, and with the wild asses was his dwelling; they suffered him to eat herbs like oxen, and with the dew of heaven was his body made wet: till he acknowledged that the most high God ruleth over the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he pleaseth.
et il fut chassé du milieu des enfants des hommes, et son cœur devint semblable à la brute, et il demeura avec les onagres, comme le bœuf il mangea de l'herbe, et son corps fut trempé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût reconnu que le Dieu très haut a la domination sur la royauté de l'homme, et qu'il y élève qui Il veut.
22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this;
Mais toi, son fils Belschazar, tu n'as pas humilié ton cœur, quoique tu saches toutes ces choses;
23 But against the Lord of heaven hast thou lifted thyself up; and the vessels of his house have they brought before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them; and the gods of silver, and gold, of copper, iron, wood, and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor know, hast thou praised; and the God in whose hand thy soul is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
et tu t'es élevé contre le Maître du ciel, et les vases de sa maison ont été apportés devant toi, et toi et tes grands, tes femmes et tes concubines, vous avez bu du vin dans ces vases, et tu as chanté des louanges aux dieux d'argent et d'or, d'airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre, qui ne voient, ni n'entendent, ni ne savent rien, et le Dieu qui tient ton souffle dans sa main et qui préside à toutes tes destinées, tu ne l'as pas honoré.
24 Thereupon was sent from before him the part of the hand, and this writing was noted down.
En conséquence, c'est de par lui qu'a été envoyée cette main qui a tracé ces caractères.
25 And this is the writing that was noted down, M'ne, M'ne, T'kel, Upharsin.
Et voici les caractères qui ont été tracés: Compté! Compté! Pesé! et Partage!
26 This the interpretation of the matter: M'ne, God hath numbered thy kingdom, and made an end of it.
Voici le sens du mot Compté: Dieu a fait le compte de ton règne et y met fin.
27 T'kel, Thou least been weighed in the balances, and been found wanting.
Pesé: Tu as été pesé à la balance et trouvé trop léger.
28 P'ress; Thy kingdom hath been divided, and is given to the Medes and Persians.
Partage: Ton empire sera partagé et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses.
29 Then gave Belshazzar the order, and they clothed Daniel with purple, with a chain of gold about his neck, and they made a proclamation concerning him, that he should rule as the third in the kingdom.
Alors, sur l'ordre de Belschazar on revêtit Daniel de la pourpre, et on lui mit au cou une chaîne d'or, et l'on publia devant lui qu'il occuperait la troisième place dans l'empire.
30 In that very night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
Cette nuit même, Belschazar, roi des Chaldéens, fut tué.
31 And Darius the Median obtained the kingdom, when he was sixty and two years old.
Et Darius le Mède reçut l'empire, étant âgé de soixante-deux ans.
