2 Samuel 24
1 And again was the anger of the Lord kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
Et la fureur du Seigneur recommença à s’irriter contre Israël, et il excita parmi eux, David, disant: Va, dénombre Israël et Juda.
2 And the king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, Traverse, I pray thee, all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba', and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
Le roi dit donc à Joab, prince de son armée: Parcours toutes les tribus d’Israël, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée, et dénombrez tout le peuple, afin que j’en sache le nombre.
3 Then said Joab unto the king, Now may the Lord thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, a hundred-fold more, and may the eyes of my Lord the king see it; but why doth my Lord the king find delight in this thing?
Et Joab répondit au roi: Que le Seigneur votre Dieu multiplie votre peuple encore autant qu’il est maintenant, et que de nouveau, il le centuple en la présence de mon seigneur le roi: mais que veut faire mon seigneur le roi par une chose de cette nature?
4 Nevertheless the king's word remained firm against Joab, and against the captains of the army: and Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
Mais la parole du roi l’emporta sur les paroles de Joab et des princes de l’armée; et Joab sortit, et les princes des soldats, de la présence du roi, pour dénombrer le peuple d’Israël.
5 And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in 'Aro'er, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the valley of Gad, and toward Ya'zer:
Et lorsqu’ils eurent passé le Jourdain, ils vinrent à Aroër, à la droite de la ville qui est dans la vallée de Gad,
6 Then they came to Gil'ad, and to the land of Tachtimchodshi; and they came to Dan-ya'an, and about to Zidon;
Puis, par Jazer ils passèrent en Galaad, et dans la terre inférieure d’Hodsi; et ils vinrent dans les forêts de Dan. Tournant ensuite près de Sidon,
7 And they came to the strong-hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, up to Beer-sheba'.
Ils passèrent près des murailles de Tyr, et de toute la terre de l’Hévéen et du Chananéen, et ils vinrent au midi de Juda, à Bersabée.
8 And so they traversed all the land, and they came at the end of nine months and twenty days to Jerusalem.
Et, toute la terre examinée, ils se trouvèrent, après neuf mois et vingt jours, à Jérusalem.
9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
Joab donc donna le dénombrement du peuple au roi, et il se trouva d’Israël huit cent mille hommes forts, qui pouvaient tirer l’épée; et de Juda, cinq cent mille combattants.
10 And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned greatly in what I have done; and now, I beseech thee, O Lord, cause the iniquity of thy servant to pass away; for I have acted very foolishly.
Mais le cœur de David fut pris de remords, après que le peuple eut été dénombré, et David dit au Seigneur: J’ai beaucoup péché en cette action; mais je vous prie. Seigneur, écartez l’iniquité de votre serviteur, parce que j’ai agi tout à fait en insensé.
11 And when David was arisen in the morning, The word of the Lord came unto Gad the prophet, David's seer, saying,
C’est pourquoi David se leva le matin, et la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Gad, le prophète et le voyant de David, disant:
12 Go and speak unto David, Thus hath said the Lord, Three things do I offer thee: choose for thyself one of them, and I will do it unto thee.
Va, et parle à David: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: L’option de trois choses t’est donnée; choisis celle que tu voudras, afin que je te la fasse.
13 So Gad came to David, and told it unto him; and he said unto him, Shall there come unto thee seven years of famine in thy land? or three months, that thou flee before thy enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be for three days a pestilence in thy land? now consider and see what word I shall bring back to him that hath sent me.
Lors donc que Gad fut venu vers David, il lui annonça, disant: Ou une famine vous viendra sur la terre durant sept ans; ou vous fuirez vos ennemis durant trois mois, et eux vous poursuivront; ou bien une peste sera pendant trois jours dans votre terre. Maintenant donc délibérez, et voyez quelle parole je dois porter en réponse à celui qui m’a envoyé.
14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall then into the hand of the Lord, —for his mercies are great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.
Et David répondit à Gad: Je suis dans une très grande angoisse, mais il vaut mieux que je tombe dans les mains du Seigneur (car ses miséricordes sont sans nombre), que dans les mains des hommes.
15 And the Lord sent a pestilence in Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba' seventy thousand men.
Et le Seigneur envoya une peste en Israël, depuis le matin jusqu’au temps marqué; et il mourut d’entre le peuple, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée, soixante dix mille hommes.
16 And when the angel stretched out his hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord bethought himself of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed among the people, It is enough: now stay thy hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshingfloor of Aravnah the Jebusite.
Et, lorsque l’ange du Seigneur eut étendu sa main sur Jérusalem pour la détruire, le Seigneur eut pitié de son affliction, et dit à l’ange qui frappait le peuple: Il suffit, maintenant retiens ta main. Or, l’ange du Seigneur était alors près de l’aire d’Aréuna, le Jébuséen.
17 And David spoke unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote among the people, and said, Lo, I have indeed sinned, and I have truly done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.
Et David dit au Seigneur, quand il vit l’ange tuant le peuple: C’est moi qui ai péché et qui ai agi iniquement: ceux-ci, qui sont les brebis, qu’ont-ils fait? Que votre main, je vous conjure, se tourne contre moi et contre la maison de mon père.
18 And Gad came to David on that day, and said unto him, Go up, erect an altar unto the Lord on the threshing-floor of Aravnah the Jebusite.
Or, Gad vint vers David en ce jour-là, et lui dit: Montez, et élevez au Seigneur un autel dans l’aire d’Aréuna, le Jébuséen.
19 And David went up, according to the word of Gad, as the Lord had commanded.
Et David monta selon la parole de Gad, que lui avait ordonnée le Seigneur.
20 And Aravnah looked up, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Aravnah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
Et regardant, Aréuna aperçut le roi et ses serviteurs venir vers lui;
21 And Aravnah said, Wherefore is my Lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy from thee the threshingfloor, to build an altar unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
Et il sortit et se prosterna devant le roi, le visage incliné vers la terre, et il dit: Quelle raison y a-t-il pour que mon seigneur le roi vienne vers son serviteur? David lui répondit: C’est pour acheter de toi l’aire et bâtir un autel au Seigneur, afin que cesse la tuerie qui ravage le peuple.
22 And Aravnah said unto David, Let my Lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good in his eyes: behold, the oxen are here for burnt-offerings, and the threshing rollers and the harness of the oxen for wood.
Et Aréuna dit à David: Que mon seigneur le roi prenne, et qu’il offre comme il lui plaît: vous avez les bœufs pour l’holocauste, le char, et les jougs de bœufs, pour servir de bois.
23 All these things did Aravnah, [for] the king, give unto the king. And Aravnah said unto the king, May the Lord thy God receive thee favorably.
Le roi Aréuna donna toutes ces choses au roi; et Aréuna dit au roi: Que le Seigneur votre Dieu reçoive votre vœu.
24 And the king said unto Aravnah, No; but I will surely buy it from thee at the value; for I will not offer burnt-offerings unto the Lord my God without paying therefor. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
Le roi, lui répondant, dit: Pas du tout comme vous voulez; mais j’achèterai de vous, selon le prix, et je n’offrirai point au Seigneur mon Dieu des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien. David donc acheta l’aire et les bœufs cinquante sicles d’argent.
25 And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and the Lord was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
Et David bâtit là un autel au Seigneur, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques. Et le Seigneur devint propice à la terre, et la plaie fut écartée d’Israël.
