2 Chronicles 20
1 And it came to pass after this, that the children of Moab, and the children of 'Ammon, and with them some of the 'Ammonim, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
Après cela, les fils de Moab, les fils d'Ammon, et, avec eux, des Minéens, se mirent en campagne pour attaquer Josaphat.
2 And there came some and told unto Jehoshaphat, saying, There is coming against thee a great multitude from beyond the sea, from Syria; and, behold, they are in Chazazon-thamar, which is 'En-gedi.
Et des gens vinrent et ils l'apprirent au roi, disant: Une grande multitude est venue contre toi des bords de la mer, du côté de la Syrie, et la voici en Asasan-Thamar (la même qu'Engaddi).
3 Then became Jehoshaphat afraid, and he directed his face to seek the Lord; and he proclaimed a fast over all Judah.
Et Josaphat eut crainte, et il s'appliqua à chercher le Seigneur, et il proclama un jeûne dans tout Juda.
4 And [the people of] Judah gathered themselves together, to ask [help] of the Lord: also out of all the cities of Judah did they come to seek the Lord.
Et Juda se rassembla pour chercher le Seigneur; et, de toutes les villes de Juda, on vint pour chercher le Seigneur.
5 And Jehoshaphat stood forward in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court.
Et Josaphat, avec toute l'Église de Juda en Jérusalem, se tint debout dans le temple du Seigneur devant le parvis neuf.
6 And he said, O Lord, the God of our fathers, thou art God in the heavens, and thou rulest over all the kingdoms of the nations; and in thy hand are the power and might, and there is none that can withstand thee.
Et il dit: Seigneur Dieu de mes pères, n'êtes-vous point Dieu dans le ciel au-dessus de nous? N'êtes-vous pas le Seigneur de tous les royaumes des nations? N'est-ce pas en vos mains que réside la force du pouvoir? Est-il quelqu'un qui puisse vous résister?
7 Behold, it is thou, O our God, who hast driven out the inhabitants of this land from before thy people Israel; and thou gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend to eternity.
N'êtes-vous pas le Seigneur dont le bras a exterminé les habitants de cette terre, devant les fils d'Israël, votre peuple? Ne l'avez-vous point donnée pour toujours à la race d'Abraham, votre bien-aimé?
8 And they have dwelt therein, and have built for thee therein a sanctuary for thy name, saying,
Elle y demeure; elle y a bâti un lieu saint à votre nom, disant
9 If there should come over us any evil, the sword, punishment, or pestilence, or famine, [then] will we stand before this house, and in thy presence, for thy name is in this house, and we will cry unto thee out of our distress, and thou wilt hear and help.
Si le mal, le glaive, la vengeance, la mort, la famine, viennent sur nous, nous nous tiendrons devant le temple et devant vous, ô Seigneur, parce que votre nom est sur le temple, et, dans notre affliction, nous crierons à vous, et vous nous entendrez, et vous nous sauverez.
10 And now, behold, the children of 'Ammon and Moab and mount Se'ir, against whom thou wouldst not suffer Israel to come, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and destroyed them not: —
Et maintenant, voilà que les fils d'Ammon, et Moab et ceux de la montagne de Seïr, chez qui vous n'avez point permis à Israël de passer, à sa sortie d'Égypte (car il s'est détourné de leurs territoires, et ne les a point exterminés),
11 And behold, they recompense us, by coming to drive us out of thy inheritance, which thou hast given us to possess.
Voilà qu'ils nous attaquent pour entrer dans l'héritage que vous nous avez donné, et pour nous en bannir.
12 O our God, wilt thou not execute justice on them? for there is no power in us against this great multitude that is coming against us; and we indeed know not what we are to do: but upon thee are our eyes [directed].
Seigneur notre Dieu, ne les jugerez-vous pas? Car nous n'avons pas la force de résister à l'immense multitude qui marche contre nous, et nous ne savons que leur faire, sinon de tourner nos yeux vers vous.
13 And all Judah were standing before the Lord, also their little ones, their wives, and their sons.
Or, tout Juda était là devant le Seigneur, avec leurs enfants et leurs femmes.
14 And upon Jachaziel the son of Zecharyahu, the son of Benayah, the son of Je'iel, the son of Matthanyah, the Levite, of the sons of Assaph, came the spirit of the Lord in the midst of the assembly;
Et, dans l'Église, l'Esprit du Seigneur descendit sur Oziel, fils de Zacharie, des fils de Bandias, des fils d'Elihel, fils du lévite Matthanias, des fils d'Asaph.
15 And he said, Listen ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus hath said the Lord unto you, Be ye not afraid and be not dismayed because of this great multitude; for not unto you belongeth the battle, but unto God.
Et il dit: Écoutez, ô Juda, et vous habitants de Jérusalem, et toi, roi Josaphat: voici ce que vous dit le Seigneur: N'ayez point de crainte, ne tremblez pas devant cette multitude immense; car ce combat n'est point de vous, mais de Dieu.
16 Tomorrow go ye down against them behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye will find them at the end of the valley, in front of the wilderness of Jeruel.
Marchez demain contre elle; ils monteront le coteau d'Assis, et vous les trouverez à l'extrémité du torrent qui traverse le désert de Jerihel.
17 Ye shall not need to fight in this place: stand firmly, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, and be not dismayed; tomorrow go out to meet them, and the Lord will be with you.
Ce n'est point à vous de les combattre; comprenez cela, et voyez comme le Seigneur, ô Juda et Jérusalem, opèrera votre salut. N'ayez point de crainte, n'hésitez pas à marcher demain à leur rencontre: le Seigneur est avec vous.
18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, to prostrate themselves unto the Lord.
Et Josaphat, et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem s'étant prosternés la face contre terre tombèrent devant le Seigneur pour l'adorer.
19 And then arose the Levites, of the children of the Kehathites, and of the children of the Korehites, to praise the Lord the God of Israel with a very loud voice.
Puis, les lévites des fils de Caath et des fils de Coré se levèrent pour chanter à haute voix les louanges du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël.
20 And they rose up early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Thekoa': and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood forward and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; believe in the Lord your God, and ye will have permanence; believe his prophets, and ye will prosper.
Et le peuple se leva dès l'aurore, et ils sortirent dans le désert de Thécoé; et, pendant qu'ils sortaient, Josaphat, se tenant immobile, cria, et dit: Écoutez-moi, Juda, et vous, habitants de Jérusalem, mettez votre confiance dans le Seigneur notre Dieu, et il se confiera en vous; mettez votre confiance dans son prophète, et vous prospérerez.
21 And he consulted with his people, and he appointed singers unto the Lord, and those that should praise in the holy ornaments, as they went out before the armed array, and said, Give thanks unto the Lord; for unto everlasting endureth his kindness.
Ensuite, il tint conseil avec le peuple; puis, il plaça en tête de l'armée, comme elle sortait, des chantres harpistes pour célébrer et louer les choses saintes, et ils disaient: Rendez gloire au Seigneur, car sa miséricorde est éternelle.
22 And at the time when they began with the song and the praise, the Lord set an ambush against the children of 'Ammon, Moab, and mount Se'ir, who were come against Judah, and they were smitten.
Et, au moment où ils commençaient à chanter ses louanges, le Seigneur excita la guerre entre les fils d'Ammon et Moab, d'une part, et ceux de la montagne de Seïr, d'autre part; ils avaient tous marché sur Israël, et ils se tournèrent les uns contre les autres.
23 And the children of 'Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Se'ir, utterly to annihilate and to destroy them; and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Se'ir, they helped to destroy one another.
Les fils d'Ammon et Moab se levèrent pour exterminer ceux de la montagne de Seïr, et, quand ils les eurent broyés, ils s'attaquèrent mutuellement, de sorte qu'ils se détruisirent.
24 And when Judah came toward the watchtower in the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none had escaped.
Lors donc que Juda arriva sur la hauteur d'où l'on découvre le désert, il regarda et il vit cette multitude, et voilà qu'ils étaient tous tombés morts, et gisant à terre, pas un ne s'était échappé.
25 And then came Jehoshaphat and his people to plunder their booty, and they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and costly vessels, which they stript off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in plundering the booty, for it was so much.
Et Josaphat avec tout son peuple descendit pour recueillir les dépouilles; ils trouvèrent quantité de bétail, des bagages, des couvertures et des choses précieuses; ils les prirent et ils mirent trois jours à recueillir le butin, tant il y en avait.
26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the Lord: therefore did they call the name of this place, The valley of Berachah [[Blessing]], until this day.
Le quatrième jour, ils reprirent leurs rangs dans le val de la bénédiction; car, en ce lieu, ils bénirent le Seigneur; à cause de cela cette vallée est appelée encore de nos jours la Vallée de la Bénédiction.
27 Then returned all the men of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, to return to Jerusalem with joy; for the Lord had caused them to rejoice over their enemies.
Et tout Juda, Josaphat à sa tête, revint à Jérusalem avec une grande allégresse, car le Seigneur les avait comblés de joie aux dépens de leurs ennemis.
28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and with harps and with trumpets unto the house of the Lord.
Et ils entrèrent à Jérusalem au son des harpes et des cithares, auxquelles se joignirent les trompettes quand ils arrivèrent au temple du Seigneur.
29 And a dread from God was on all the kingdoms of [those] countries, when they heard that the Lord had fought with the enemies of Israel.
Et il y eut un grand trouble venant du Seigneur, parmi tous les royaumes de la terre, quand ils surent que le Seigneur avait combattu les ennemis d'Israël.
30 So the kingdom of Jehoshaphat had repose, and his God gave him rest all round about.
Ainsi le royaume de Josaphat fut en paix; car le Seigneur, alentour, apaisa tout.
31 And [so] did Jehoshaphat reign over Judah; thirty and five years old was he when he became king, and twenty and five years did he reign in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was 'Azubah the daughter of Shilchi.
Et Josaphat régna en Jérusalem; il avait trente-cinq ans lorsqu'il monta sur le trône, et son règne dura vingt-cinq ans. Sa mère s'appelait Azuba, fille de Sali.
32 And he walked in the way of his father Assa, and turned not aside from it, doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord.
Et il marcha dans les voies d'Asa, son père, et il ne s'en détourna pas, et il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux du Seigneur.
33 Nevertheless the high-places were not removed; for the people had not yet directed their heart firmly unto the God of their fathers.
Cependant, les hauts lieux subsistèrent encore, et le peuple ne dirigea pas encore son cœur vers le Seigneur Dieu de ses pères.
34 And the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, the first and the last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Chanani, which was entered into the book of the kings of Israel.
Le reste des actes de Josaphat, des premiers et des derniers, est compris dans les récits de Jéhu, fils d'Anani, qui écrivit le livre des Rois d'Israël.
35 And after this did Jehoshaphat the king of Judah connect himself with Achazyah the king of Israel, the same who acted very wickedly;
Après cela, Josaphat, roi de Juda, fit alliance avec Ochozias, roi d'Israël, et il pécha,
36 And he connected himself with him to make ships to go to Tharshish: and they made ships in 'Ezyon-geber.
En agissant et en marchant avec lui pour construire une flotte qui partit d'Asion-Gaber, allant à Tharsis.
37 Then prophesied Eli'ezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast connected thyself with Achazyahu, the Lord hath broken down thy works. And the ships were wrecked, so that they were not able to go to Tharshish.
Alors, Eliézer, fils de Dodia de Marine, prophétisa contre Josaphat, disant: Parce que tu t'es lié avec Ochosias, le Seigneur a détruit ton ouvrage; il a brisé ta flotte, et elle n'a pu aller jusqu'à Tharsis.
