1 Samuel 4

1 And the word of Samuel became known to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ha'ezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

Or il arriva en ces jours-là, que les Philistins se rassemblèrent pour le combat; et Israël sortit au devant des Philistins pour la bataille, et il campa près de la pierre du Secours. Mais les Philistins vinrent à Aphec,

2 And the Philistines put themselves in battle-array against Israel; and the battle became general, and Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew on the battle-ground, in the field, about four thousand men.

Et ils rangèrent leur armée en bataille en face d’Israël. Or, le combat engagé, Israël tourna le dos aux Philistins; et il y eut de taillés en pièces dans ce combat çà et là, à travers les champs, environ quatre mille hommes.

3 And when the people were come back into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us this day before the Philistines? Let us bring over to us out of Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that it may come in the midst of us, and deliver us out of the hand of our enemies.

Et le peuple revint dans le camp, et les anciens d’Israël dirent: Pourquoi le Seigneur nous a-t-il frappés aujourd’hui, devant les Philistins? Apportons près de nous de Silo, l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur, et qu’elle vienne au milieu de nous, afin qu’elle nous sauve de la main de nos ennemis.

4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought away from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, who dwelleth over the cherubim: and the two sons of 'Eli, Chophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Le peuple envoya donc à Silo, et ils en apportèrent l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur des armées, assis sur les chérubins; et les deux fils d’Héli, Ophni et Phinéès, étaient avec l’arche de l’alliance de Dieu.

5 And it happened when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, that all Israel set up a great shout, so that the earth trembled.

Et lorsque l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur fut venue dans le camp, tout Israël cria d’un grand cri, et la terre retentit.

6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.

Et les Philistins entendirent le bruit de la clameur et dirent: Quel est le bruit de cette grande clameur dans le camp des Hébreux? Et ils connurent que l’arche du Seigneur était dans le camp.

7 And the Philistines were afraid; for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for the like of this hath not been, yesterday or the day before.

Alors les Philistins craignirent, disant: Dieu est venu dans le camp. Et ils gémirent, disant:

8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

Malheur à nous! car il n’y eut pas une si grande allégresse hier et avant-hier; malheur à nous! Qui nous sauvera de la main de ces dieux suprêmes? ce sont ces dieux qui ont frappé l’Égypte de toute sorte de plaies dans le désert,

9 Be strong, and act like men, O Philistines, so that ye become not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been servants to you: therefore act like men, and fight.

Prenez courage, et soyez hommes de cœur, Philistins; ne servez pas les Hébreux comme eux vous ont servis; prenez courage et combattez.

10 And the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were smitten, and they fled every man unto his tent: and the defeat was very great; and there fell of Israel thirty thousand men on foot.

Les Philistins combattirent donc, et Israël fut taillé en pièces, et chacun s’enfuit dans son tabernacle; et il se fit un très grand carnage, et il tomba du côté d’Israël trente mille hommes de pied.

11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of 'Eli, Chophni and Phinehas, died also.

De plus, l’arche de Dieu fut prise, et les deux fils d’Héli, Ophni et Phinéès moururent aussi.

12 And there ran a man of Benjamin from the battlefield, and came to Shiloh on the same day, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head.

Or, un homme de Benjamin accourant de l’armée, vint à Silo, ce jour-là, ayant son vêtement déchiré, et la tête couverte de poussière.

13 And when he came, lo, 'Eli was sitting upon a chair by the wayside watching; for his heart was anxious for the ark of God. And when the man came to tell it in the city, all the city cried out.

Et lorsque cet homme arriva, Héli était assis sur son siège, tourné vers le chemin; car son cœur tremblait de crainte pour l’arche de Dieu. Mais, cet homme, après qu’il fut entré, donna la nouvelle à la ville; et toute la cité poussa des hurlements.

14 And when 'Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this multitude? And the man came in hastily, and told it to 'Eli.

Et, Héli entendit le bruit de la clameur et dit: Quel est le bruit de ce tumulte? Et cet homme se hâta, et vint, et donna la nouvelle à Héli.

15 Now 'Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were fixed, so that he could not see.

Or, Héli avait quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans, et ses yeux étaient obscurcis, et il ne pouvait pas voir.

16 And the man said unto 'Eli, I am the person that came from the battlefield, and I myself fled from the battlefield today. And he said, What was it that took place, my son?

Et cet homme dit à Héli: C’est moi qui suis venu de la bataille, et moi qui me suis enfui de l’armée aujourd’hui. Héli lui demanda: Qu’a-t-il été fait, mon fils?

17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath also been a great slaughter among the people, and also thy two sons, Chophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God hath been taken.

Celui qui donnait la nouvelle répondant: Israël, dit-il, a fui devant les Philistins et il a été fait une grande ruine dans le peuple; et de plus vos deux fils, Ophni et Phinéès, sont morts, et l’arche de Dieu a été prise.

18 And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from off the chair backward by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken, and he died; for the man was old, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

Lorsque cet homme eut nommé l’arche de Dieu, Héli tomba de son siège à la renverse près de la porte, et, la tête brisée, il mourut. C’était un homme vieux et très avancé en âge; et il jugea lui-même Israël pendant quarante ans.

19 And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings concerning that the ark of God had been taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she sank down and gave birth; for her pains came suddenly upon her.

Or, sa belle-fille, femme de Phinéès, était enceinte et près d’enfanter; et ayant appris la nouvelle que l’arche de Dieu avait été prise, et que son beau-père était mort, ainsi que son mari, elle se baissa et enfanta; car les douleurs subites l’avaient saisie.

20 And at the moment of her dying, the women that stood around her spoke [unto her], Fear not; for a son hast thou born. But she answered not, nor did she take it to heart.

Mais au moment même de sa mort, celles qui se tenaient auprès d’elle, lui dirent: Ne crains point, car tu as enfanté un fils. Et elle ne répondit pas, et n’y fit pas même attention.

21 And she named the child I-chabod, saying, Glory is departed from Israel; because of the taking away of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

Et elle appela son fils Ichabod, disant: La gloire d’Israël a été transférée, parce que l’arche de Dieu fut prise, et à cause de son beau-père et de son mari;

22 And she said, Glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God hath been taken away.

Et elle dit: La gloire d’Israël a été transférée, parce que l’arche de Dieu avait été prise.
