1 Samuel 20
1 And David fled from Nayoth near Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is my iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?
Or, David s’enfuit de Naïoth, qui est en Ramatha, et étant venu, il dit devant Jonathas: Qu’ai-je fait? quelle est mon iniquité, et quel est mon péché contre ton père, puisqu’il cherche mon âme?
2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father is not wont to do a great thing or a small thing, which he doth not inform me of; and why should my father conceal this thing from me? it is not so.
Jonathas lui répondit: À Dieu ne plaise! tu ne mourras pas; car mon père ne fait rien de grand ni de petit, s’il ne me l’a fait savoir auparavant. C’est donc la seule parole que mon père m’ait célée? Cela ne sera nullement.
3 But David swore again, and said, Thy father well knoweth that I have found grace in thy eyes; wherefore he said, Jonathan must not know this, lest he be grieved: nevertheless, as truly as the Lord liveth, and thy soul liveth, there was but one step between me and death.
Et il jura de nouveau à David. Et celui-ci dit: Ton père sait certainement que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et il dira: Que Jonathas ne sache point ceci, de peur qu’il ne soit contristé. Bien plus, le Seigneur vit, et ton âme vit! car c’est d’un seul pas (pour ainsi dire) que moi et la mort nous sommes séparés.
4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul sayeth will I do for thee.
Et Jonathas répondit à David: Tout ce que me dira ton âme, je le ferai pour toi.
5 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new-moon, and I should as usual sit with the king to eat; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field until the third evening.
David dit alors à Jonathas: Voici que les calendes sont demain, et moi d’après l’usage, j’ai coutume de m’asseoir auprès du roi pour manger; laisse-moi donc aller me cacher dans la campagne jusqu’au soir du troisième jour.
6 If thy father at all miss me, then do thou say, David asked earnestly leave of me that he might run to Beth-lechem his city; for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.
Si, regardant, ton père me demande, tu lui répondras: David m’a demandé d’aller promptement à Bethléhem, sa ville; parce que là les victimes solennelles sont présentées pour tous ceux de sa tribu.
7 If he should say thus, It is well: then shall thy servant have peace; but if it be at all displeasing to him, then know that the evil is determined on by him.
S’il dit: Bien, la paix sera faite avec ton serviteur; mais s’il s’irrite, sache que sa malice est à son comble.
8 And do thou deal kindly with thy servant; for into a covenant of the Lord hast thou brought thy servant with thee; but if there be in me any iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldst thou bring me to thy father?
Fais donc miséricorde à ton serviteur, puisque tu m’as fait faire, à moi, ton serviteur, l’alliance du Seigneur avec toi; mais s’il est quelque iniquité en moi, tue-moi toi-même, et ne m’introduis point auprès de ton père.
9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee; for if I should know for certain that evil were determined on by my father to come upon thee, would I not tell it thee?
Et Jonathas dit: Loin de toi une pareille chose; car il ne peut pas se faire, que je sache d’une manière certaine que la malice de mon père contre toi est à son comble, et que je ne t’en informe point.
10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell it me? or what, if thy father answer thee roughly?
Et David répondit à Jonathas: Qui m’informera, si par hasard ton père répond durement à mon sujet?
11 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, let us go out into the field. And they went out, both of them, into the field.
Et Jonathas dit à David: Viens, et sortons dehors dans la campagne. Et lorsqu’ils furent sortis tous deux dans la campagne,
12 And Jonathan said unto David, May the God of Israel [punish me] if, when I have sounded my father about this time tomorrow, or of the third day, and, behold, if he be good toward David, I do not then send unto thee, and inform thee of it.
Jonathas dit à David: Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, si je découvre le dessein de mon père demain, ou après-demain, et qu’il y ait quelque chose de bon pour David, et que je n’envoie aussitôt vers toi, et que je ne t’en donne point connaissance,
13 May the Lord do so to Jonathan and continue so yet farther, that, if it please my father [to do] thee evil, I will inform thee of it, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace; and may the Lord be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
Que le Seigneur fasse ceci à Jonathas, et qu’il ajoute cela. Mais si la malice de mon père persévère contre toi, j’ouvrirai ton oreille, et je te laisserai partir, afin que tu ailles en paix, et que le Seigneur soit avec toi, comme il a été avec mon père.
14 And wilt thou not, should I be yet alive, show me the kindness of the Lord, that I may not die?
Et si je vis, tu useras envers moi de la miséricorde du Seigneur; mais si je meurs,
15 But, surely, thou wilt not withdraw thy kindness from my house for ever, not even when the Lord cutteth off the enemies of David, every one, from off the face of the earth.
Tu ne retireras point à jamais ta miséricorde de ma maison, quand le Seigneur aura exterminé de la terre les ennemis de David jusqu’au dernier. Que le Seigneur enlève Jonathas de sa maison, et qu’il tire vengeance, des ennemis de David.
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, [saying, ] May the Lord require it at the hand of David's enemies.
Jonathas fit donc alliance avec la maison de David, et le Seigneur tira vengeance des ennemis de David.
17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, by his love for him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
Et Jonathas renouvela ses serments à David, parce qu’il l’aimait; car il l’aimait comme son âme.
18 Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrow is the new-moon: and thou wilt be missed, because thy seat will be left empty.
Et Jonathas lui dit: Demain sont les calendes, et on s’enquerra de toi;
19 And when thou hast stayed till the third day, then shalt thou go down greatly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself on the work-day; and thou shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
Car on s’enquerra de ta place jusqu’après demain. Tu descendras donc, te hâtant, et tu viendras dans le lieu où tu dois être cachée au jour auquel il est permis de travailler, et tu te tiendras près de la pierre dont le nom est Ezel.
20 And I will myself shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I were shooting at a mark.
Et moi je décocherai trois flèches près de la pierre, et je les lancerai, comme m’exerçant à atteindre le but.
21 And, behold, I will send the lad, saying, Go, find the arrows; if I should now say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee: then take him and come; for there is peace to thee, and it is nothing; as the Lord liveth.
J’enverrai aussi mon serviteur, lui disant: Va, et apporte-moi les flèches.
22 But if thus I should say unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee: then go thy way, for the Lord hath sent thee off.
Si je dis à mon serviteur: Voici que les flèches sont en deçà de toi, prends-les; viens toi-même à moi, parce que la paix est avec toi, et il n’y a rien de mal; le Seigneur vit! Mais si je parle ainsi à mon serviteur: Voici que les flèches sont au-delà de toi; va en paix, parce que le Seigneur te laisse aller.
23 And touching the matter of which we have spoken, thou and I, behold, the Lord is between me and thee for ever.
Quant à la parole que nous avons dite, moi et toi, que le Seigneur soit entre moi et toi pour toujours.
24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new-moon was come, the king set himself down to the repast to eat.
David donc se cacha dans la campagne, et vinrent les calendes, et le roi s’assit pour manger du pain.
25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, upon the seat by the wall: and when Jonathan arose, Abner seated himself by the side of Saul, and David's place was left empty.
Et lorsque le roi se fut assis (selon la coutume) sur son siège près de la muraille, Jonathas se leva; Abner s’assit à côté de Saül, et la place de David parut vide.
26 Nevertheless Saul spoke not the least on that day; for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; because he hath not yet purified himself.
Et Saül ne dit rien en ce jour-là; car il pensait que peut-être il était arrivé à David de n’être pas pur, et de n’avoir pas été purifié.
27 And it came to pass on the morrow, the second day of the new-moon, that David's place was left empty; and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore is the son of Jesse not come, both yesterday and today, to the repast?
Et lorsque fut venu le second jour après les calendes, la place de David parut encore vide. Et Saül demanda à Jonathas, son fils: Pourquoi le fils d’Isaï n’est-il point venu, ni hier, ni aujourd’hui, pour manger?
28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David asked earnestly leave of me to go as far as Beth-lechem.
Et Jonathas répondit à Saül: Il m’a demandé instamment d’aller à Bethléhem,
29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for we have a family-sacrifice in the city, and my brother himself hath commanded it to me; and now, if I have found favor in thy eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, that I may see my brothers: therefore is he not come unto the king's table.
Et il a dit: Laissez-moi aller, parce qu’il y a un sacrifice solennel en ma cité, un de mes frères m’a appelé; maintenant donc, si j’ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, j’irai aussitôt, et je verrai mes frères. C’est pour cette raison qu’il n’est pas venu à la table du roi.
30 And the anger of Saul was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of perverse rebelliousness! do I not know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thy own shame, and to the shame of thy mother's nakedness?
Or, Saül irrité contre Jonathas, lui dit: Fils d’une femme qui ravit volontiers un homme, est-ce que j’ignore que tu aimes le fils d’Isaï, à ta confusion, et à la confusion de ton ignominieuse mère?
31 For all the days that the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou wilt not have any permanence with thy kingdom: therefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
Car durant tous les jours que le fils d’Isaï vivra sur la terre, tu ne seras pas affermi, ni toi, ni ton royaume. C’est pourquoi, envoie dès maintenant, et amène-le-moi, parce que c’est un fils de mort.
32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be put to death? what hath he done?
Mais Jonathas répondant à Saül, son père, dit: Pourquoi mourra-t-il? qu’a-t-il fait?
33 And Saul cast his spear at him to smite him: and Jonathan understood that it was determined on by his father to put David to death.
Et Saül saisit sa lance pour le frapper. Et Jonathas comprit qu’il avait été arrêté par son père de tuer David.
34 And Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food on the second day of the new-moon; for he was grieved for David; because his father had made him feel ashamed.
Jonathas donc se leva de table dans une colère de fureur, et il ne mangea pas de pain le second jour des calendes; car il était contristé au sujet de David, parce que son père l’avait outragé.
35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field to the place appointed with David, and a little lad was with him.
Et lorsque le matin fut venu, Jonathas vint à la campagne, selon la convention faite avec David, et un petit serviteur avec lui,
36 And he said unto his lad, Run, do find out the arrows which I shoot: and the lad ran, and he shot the arrow so as to pass beyond him.
Et il dit à son serviteur: Va, et apporte-moi les flèches que je tire. Et lorsque le serviteur eut couru, il tira une autre flèche au-delà du serviteur.
37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the lad, and said, Behold, the arrow is beyond thee!
C’est pourquoi le serviteur vint à l’endroit du trait qu’avait lancé Jonathas; et Jonathas cria derrière le serviteur, et dit: La voilà la flèche, là-bas, au-delà de toi.
38 And Jonathan called after the lad, Make haste, speed, stay not: and Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
Et Jonathas cria encore derrière le serviteur, disant: Hâte-toi vite, ne t’arrête point. Or le serviteur de Jonathas recueillit les flèches, et les apporta à son maître;
39 But the lad knew not the least: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
Quant à ce qui se faisait, il l’ignorait entièrement; car Jonathas et David seulement savaient la chose.
40 And Jonathan gave his weapons unto the lad who was with him, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.
Ensuite Jonathas donna ses armes au serviteur, et lui dit: Va, et porte-les à la ville.
41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose from the south side [of the stone], and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.
Et lorsque le serviteur s’en fut allé, David se leva du lieu, qui regardait le midi, et tombant incliné vers la terre, il se prosterna par trois fois; et, s’embrassant l’un l’autre, ils pleurèrent ensemble, mais David beaucoup plus.
42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace: what we have sworn, both of us, in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord shall be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever, [shall be kept]. And he arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.
Jonathas donc dit à David: Va en paix; tout ce que nous avons juré tous deux, au nom du Seigneur, disant: Que le Seigneur soit entre moi et toi, et entre ma postérité et ta postérité pour toujours… Et David se leva et s’en alla; mais Jonathas rentra dans la ville.
