1 Samuel 12
1 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and I have set a king over you.
Samuel dit à tout Israël: « Voici, j’ai écouté votre voix dans tout ce que vous m’avez dit, et j’ai établi un roi sur vous.
2 And now, behold, the king is walking before you; and I am old and gray-headed; and my sons, behold, they are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth even until this day.
Et maintenant, voici le roi qui marchera devant vous. Pour moi, je suis vieux, j’ai blanchi, et mes fils sont au milieu de vous; j’ai marché devant vous, depuis ma jeunesse jusqu’à ce jour.
3 Behold, here am I; testify against me in the presence of the Lord, and in the presence of his anointed: Whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or from whose hand have I received any ransom so that I withdrew my eyes from him? and I will restore it you.
Me voici; rendez témoignage de moi, en présence de Yahweh et en présence de son oint: De qui ai-je pris le bœuf et de qui ai-je pris l’âne? A qui ai-je fait tort et qui ai-je opprimé? De qui ai-je reçu un présent pour fermer les yeux sur lui? Je vous le rendrai. »
4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor hast thou oppressed us, and thou hast not taken from any man's hand the least.
Ils répondirent: « Tu ne nous as pas fait tort, tu ne nous as pas opprimés, et tu n’as rien reçu de la main de personne. »
5 And he said unto them, The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found in my hand the least: and they answered, He is witness.
Il leur dit: « Yahweh est témoin contre vous, et son oint aussi est témoin, en ce jour, que vous n’avez rien trouvé dans mes mains! » Le peuple répondit: « Il en est témoin. »
6 And Samuel said unto the people, It is the Lord who did [wonders through] Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
Et Samuel dit au peuple: « Oui, Yahweh est témoin, lui qui a établi Moïse et Aaron, et qui a fait monter vos pères du pays d’Égypte.
7 And now stand up, that I may hold judgment with you before the Lord concerning all the benefits of the Lord, which he hath done to you and to your fathers.
Maintenant, présentez-vous, je veux vous appeler en jugement devant Yahweh au sujet de tous les bienfaits qu’il vous a accordés, à vous et à vos pères.
8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, then did your fathers cry unto the Lord, and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, and they brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and caused them to dwell in this place.
Après que Jacob fut venu en Égypte, vos pères crièrent vers Yahweh, et Yahweh envoya Moïse et Aaron, qui firent sortir vos pères d’Égypte et les établirent dans ce lieu.
9 And when they forgot the Lord their God, he sold them into the hand of Sissera, the chief of the host of Chazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they made war against them.
Mais ils oublièrent Yahweh, leur Dieu, et il les livra entre les mains de Sisara chef de l’armée d’Hasor, entre les mains des Philistins et entre les mains du roi de Moab, qui leur firent la guerre.
10 And they cried [then] unto the Lord, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served the Be'alim and the 'Ashtaroth; and now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
Ils crièrent vers Yahweh, en disant: « Nous avons péché, car nous avons abandonné Yahweh et nous avons servi les Baals et les Astartés; délivrez-nous maintenant de la main de nos ennemis, et nous vous servirons. »
11 And the Lord sent Yerubba'al, and Bedan, and Yiphthach, and Samuel, and he delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, so that ye dwelt safely.
Et Yahweh envoya Jérobaal et Badan, et Jephté et Samuel, et il vous délivra de la main de vos ennemis tout autour de vous, et vous avez habité vos demeures en sécurité.
12 But when ye saw that Nachash the king of the children of 'Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, No; but a king shall reign over us: when the Lord your God is your king.
Et quand vous avez vu Naas, roi des fils d’Ammon marcher contre vous, vous m’avez dit: Non! mais un roi régnera sur nous! alors que Yahweh, votre Dieu, était votre roi.
13 And now here is the king whom ye have chosen, whom ye have asked for! and, behold, the Lord hath set over you a king.
Voici donc le roi que vous avez choisi, que vous avez demandé; voici que Yahweh a établi un roi sur vous.
14 If ye will fear the Lord, and serve him, and obey his voice, and will not rebel against the will of the Lord: then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the Lord your God.
Si vous craignez Yahweh, si vous le servez et obéissez à sa voix, si vous n’êtes pas rebelles au commandement de Yahweh et si vous suivez vous et le roi qui règne sur vous, Yahweh votre Dieu, ...
15 But if ye will not hearken to the voice of the Lord, and rebel against the will of the Lord: then will the hand of the Lord be against you, as it was against your fathers.
Mais si vous n’obéissez pas à la voix de Yahweh et si vous êtes rebelles au commandement de Yahweh la main de Yahweh sera contre vous, comme elle a été contre vos pères.
16 And now stand up and see this great thing, which the Lord is about doing before your eyes.
Maintenant, restez encore, et voyez cette grande chose que Yahweh va opérer sous vos yeux.
17 Is there not wheat-harvest today? I will call unto the Lord, and he will send thunders and rain; and ye will [thus] perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done, in the eyes of the Lord, to ask for yourselves a king.
N’est-ce pas maintenant la moisson des blés? Eh bien, je vais invoquer Yahweh, et il enverra des tonnerres et de la pluie; vous saurez alors et vous verrez combien grand est aux yeux de Yahweh le mal que vous avez fait en demandant pour vous un roi. »
18 And Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunders and rain on that day: and all the people feared greatly the Lord and Samuel.
Samuel invoqua Yahweh et Yahweh envoya ce même jour des tonnerres et de la pluie; et tout le peuple eut une grande crainte de Yahweh et de Samuel.
19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray in behalf of thy servants unto the Lord thy God, that we may not die; for we have added unto all our sins yet this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.
Tout le peuple dit à Samuel: « Prie pour tes serviteurs Yahweh, ton Dieu, afin que nous ne mourions pas, car nous avons ajouté à tous nos péchés le tort de demander pour nous un roi. »
20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not; ye have indeed done all this evil: yet turn not aside from following the Lord, and serve ye the Lord with all your heart;
Samuel dit au peuple: « Ne craignez point. Vous avez fait tout ce mal, mais ne cessez pas de suivre Yahweh, et servez Yahweh de tout votre cœur.
21 And turn ye not aside; for then would ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; because they are vain.
Ne vous en détournez point, car ce serait pour aller à des choses de néant, qui ne vous donneraient ni profit ni délivrance, parce que ce sont des choses de néant.
22 For the Lord will not forsake his people for the sake of his great name; because it hath pleased the Lord to make you a people unto himself.
Car Yahweh n’abandonnera pas son peuple, à cause de son grand nom; car il a plu à Yahweh de faire de vous son peuple.
23 Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray in behalf of you; but I will teach you the good and the right way:
Loin de moi aussi de pécher contre Yahweh, en cessant de prier pour vous! Je vous enseignerai le bon et droit chemin.
24 Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for see what great things he hath done with you.
Craignez seulement Yahweh, et servez-le en vérité de tout votre cœur; car voyez quelles grandes choses il a faites au milieu de vous!
25 But if ye will in any wise do wickedly, both ye yourselves as also your king shall perish.
Mais si vous persévérez à faire le mal, vous périrez, vous et votre roi. »
