1 Kings 18
1 And it lasted many days, when the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Achab; and I will give rain upon the face of the earth.
Après beaucoup de jours, la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Élie, dans la troisième année, en ces termes: « Va, parais devant Achab, et je ferai tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol. »
2 And Elijah went to show himself unto Achab; and the famine was grievous in Samaria.
Et Élie partit, pour se présenter devant Achab. La famine était devenue grande à Samarie,
3 And Achab called 'Obadiah, who was the superintendent of the house; —(now 'Obadiah feared the Lord greatly;
Achab fit appeler Abdias, chef de sa maison. — Or Abdias craignait beaucoup Yahweh,
4 And it happened, when Izebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, that 'Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them fifty each in one cave, and provided them with bread and water; )
car, lorsque Jézabel massacra les prophètes de Yahweh, Abdias prit cent prophètes et les cacha cinquante par cinquante dans des cavernes, où il les nourrit de pain et d’eau. —
5 And Achab said unto 'Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the springs of water, and unto all the brooks, peradventure we may find grass and keep alive horse and mule, that we lose not all the cattle.
Achab dit à Abdias: « Va par le pays vers toutes les sources d’eau et vers tous les torrents; peut-être se trouvera-t-il de l’herbe, et nous conserverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, et nous n’aurons pas à abattre de bétail. »
6 So they divided between them the land to pass through it: Achab went one way by himself alone, and 'Obadiah went another way by himself alone.
Ils se partagèrent le pays pour le parcourir; Achab alla seul par un chemin, et Abdias alla seul par un autre chemin.
7 And as 'Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah came toward him; and he recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou here indeed, my Lord Elijah?
Comme Abdias était en route, voici qu’Élie le rencontra. Abdias, l’ayant reconnu, tomba sur son visage et dit: « Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Élie? »
8 And he said unto him, I am: go, say unto thy Lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
Il lui répondit: « C’est moi; va dire à ton maître: Voici Élie! »
9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldst deliver thy servant into the hand of Achab, to slay me?
Et Abdias dit: « Quel péché ai-je commis, que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d’Achab, pour qu’il me fasse mourir?
10 As the Lord thy God liveth, there is not a nation or kingdom whither my Lord hath not sent to seek thee; and when they said, He is not here: he caused that kingdom and nation to take an oath, that no one could find thee.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, est vivant! Il n’y a ni nation ni royaume où mon maître n’ait envoyé pour te chercher; et quand on disait: Élie n’est pas ici, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation qu’on ne t’avait pas trouvé.
11 And now thou sayest, Go, say unto thy Lord, Behold, here is Elijah.
Et maintenant tu me dis: Va dire à ton maître: Voici Élie!
12 And it may come to pass, that, when I go from thee, the spirit of the Lord may carry thee whither I know not; and when I come to inform Achab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me; but I thy servant have feared the Lord from my youth.
Et lorsque je t’aurai quitté, l’Esprit de Yahweh te transportera je ne sais où; et j’irai informer Achab, qui ne te trouvera pas et me tuera. Cependant ton serviteur craint Yahweh dès sa jeunesse.
13 Hath it not been told unto my Lord what I did when Izebel slew the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the prophets of the Lord, fifty each in one cave, and provided them with bread and water?
N’a-t-on pas dit à mon seigneur ce que j’ai fait quand Jézabel a massacré les prophètes de Yahweh? J’ai caché cent des prophètes de Yahweh, cinquante par cinquante, dans des cavernes, et je les ai nourris de pain et d’eau.
14 And now thou sayest, Go say to thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he will slay me.
Et maintenant tu dis: Va dire à ton maître: Voici Élie! Il me tuera. »
15 Then said Elijah, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I have stood, surely today will I show myself unto him.
Mais Élie dit: « Yahweh des armées, devant qui je me tiens, est vivant! Aujourd’hui je me présenterai devant Achab. »
16 So 'Ohadiah went to meet Achab, and he told it to him; and Achab went to meet Elijah.
Abdias alla à la rencontre d’Achab et lui apprit la nouvelle; et Achab se rendit au-devant d’Élie.
17 And it came to pass, when Achab saw Elijah, that Achab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
Dès qu’Achab aperçut Élie, Achab lui dit: « Toi ici, le perturbateur d’Israël? »
18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, through your forsaking the commandments of the Lord, and because thou hast followed the Be'alim.
Élie répondit: « Je ne trouble point Israël; c’est toi, au contraire, et la maison de ton père, en ce que vous avez abandonné les commandements de Yahweh et que tu es allé après les Baals.
19 And now send, assemble unto me all Israel at Mount Carmel, and the prophets of Ba'al four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the grove four hundred, who eat at the table of Izebel.
Maintenant, envoie rassembler tout Israël auprès de moi, à la montagne du Carmel, ainsi que les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d’Astarté, qui mangent de la table de Jézabel. »
20 And Achab sent round among all the children of Israel, and he assembled the prophets at Mount Carmel.
Achab envoya des messagers vers tous les enfants d’Israël, et rassembla les prophètes à la montagne du Carmel.
21 And Elijah approached unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between the two opinions? if the Lord be the God, follow him; and if Ba'al—follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Alors Élie s’approcha de tout le peuple et dit: « Jusques à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés? Si Yahweh est Dieu, allez après lui; si c’est Baal, allez après lui! » Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.
22 And Elijah said unto the people, I have been left a prophet of the Lord by myself alone; but the prophets of Ba'al are four hundred and fifty men.
Et Élie dit au peuple: « Je suis resté seul des prophètes de Yahweh, et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal.
23 Therefore let there be given unto us two bullocks; and let them choose for themselves the one bullock, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire to it: and I will prepare the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire to it.
Que l’on nous donne deux taureaux; qu’ils choisissent pour eux l’un des taureaux, qu’ils le coupent par morceaux et qu’ils le placent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu; et moi je préparerai l’autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.
24 And do ye call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and it shall be that the God who answereth by fire, he shall be the [true] God. And all the people answered and said, The proposal is good.
Puis invoquez le nom de votre dieu, et moi j’invoquerai le nom de Yahweh. Le dieu qui répondra par le feu, celui-là est Dieu. » Tout le peuple répondit en disant: « C’est bien! »
25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Ba'al, Choose you for yourselves the one bullock, and prepare it first; for ye are the many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it.
Élie dit aux prophètes de Baal: « Choisissez pour vous l’un des taureaux, préparez-le d’abord, car vous êtes les plus nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu. »
26 And they took the bullock which he had given to them, and they prepared it; and they called on the name of Ba'al from morning even until noon, saying, O Ba'al, answer us; but there was no voice, nor any answer: and they danced about the altar which had been made.
Ils prirent le taureau qu’on leur donna et le préparèrent; et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu’à midi, en disant: « Baal, réponds-nous! » Mais il n’y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils sautaient devant l’autel qu’ils avaient fait.
27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked at them, and said, Call with a loud voice; for he is a god; either he is holding council, or he is busy in some pursuit, or he is on a journey; or peradventure he sleepeth, and may thus awaken.
À midi, Élie se moqua d’eux et dit: « Criez à haute voix, car il est dieu; il est en méditation, ou il est occupé, ou il est en voyage; peut-être qu’il dort, et il se réveillera. »
28 And they called with a loud voice and cut themselves after their custom with knives and spears, till the blood gushed out over them.
Et ils crièrent à haute voix, et ils se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances, jusqu’à ce que le sang coulât sur eux.
29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, that they practised their follies until near [the time of] the offering of the evening-sacrifice; but there was neither voice, nor any answer, nor any perceptible sound.
Lorsque midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu’ au moment où l’on présente l’oblation. Mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d’attention.
30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me: and all the people came near unto him; and he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been torn down.
Élie dit à tout le peuple: « Approchez-vous de moi. » Tout le peuple s’étant approché de lui, Élie rétablit l’autel de Yahweh, qui avait été renversé.
31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the Lord was come, saying, Israel shall be thy name.
Élie prit douze pierres, d’après le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel la parole de Yahweh avait été adressée en ces termes: « Israël sera ton nom. »
32 And he built of the stones an altar in the name of the Lord; and he made a trench as great as would contain two seahs of seed round about the altar.
Il bâtit avec ces pierres un autel au nom de Yahweh; puis, ayant fait autour de l’autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures de semence,
33 And he put in order the wood, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid them on the wood,
il arrangea le bois, coupa le taureau par morceaux et le plaça sur le bois.
34 And he said. Fill four jars with water; and they had to pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood: and he said, Do it the second time: and they did it the second time: and he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.
Et il dit: « Remplissez d’eau quatre cruches, et versez- les sur l’holocauste et sur le bois. » Il dit: « Faites-le une seconde fois »; et ils le firent une seconde fois. Il dit: « Faites le une troisième fois »; et ils le firent une troisième fois.
35 And the water ran round about the altar; and the trench also he filled with water.
L’eau coula autour de l’autel, et il fit remplir aussi d’eau le fossé.
36 And it came to pass, at [the time of] the offering of the evening-sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Lord, God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, this day let it be known that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that at thy word I have done all these things.
À l’heure où l’on offre l’oblation du soir, Élie, le prophète, s’avança et dit: « Yahweh, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on sache aujourd’hui que vous êtes Dieu en Israël, que je suis votre serviteur et que j’ai fait toutes ces choses sur votre parole.
37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me, and let all this people know that thou, O Lord, art the [true] God, and thou wilt [then] have turned their heart back again.
Exaucez-moi, Yahweh, exaucez-moi! Afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que vous, Yahweh, êtes Dieu, et que c’est vous qui ramenez leur cœur en arrière. »
38 And there fell a fire of the Lord, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust; and the water also that was in the trench did it lick up.
Alors le feu de Yahweh tomba, et il consuma l’holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et absorba l’eau qui était dans le fossé.
39 And when all the people saw this, they fell on their faces; and they said, the Lord—he is the God; the Lord—he is the God.
Quand tout le peuple vit cela, ils tombèrent sur leur visage et ils dirent: C’est Yahweh qui est Dieu! C’est Yahweh qui est Dieu! »
40 And Elijah said unto them, Seize the prophets of Ba'al; not one of them must escape; and they seized them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slaughtered them there.
Et Élie leur dit: Saisissez les prophètes de Baal; que pas un d’eux n’échappe! » Ils les saisirent, et Élie les fit descendre au torrent de Cison, où il les tua.
41 And Elijah said unto Achab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
Élie dit à Achab: « Monte, mange et bois; car j’entends le bruissement de la pluie. »
42 So Achab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down toward the earth, and put his face between his knees;
Achab monta pour manger et pour boire; mais Élie monta au sommet du Carmel et, se penchant vers la terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux,
43 And he said to his servant, Go up, I pray thee, look in the direction of the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, Not the least [is visible]. And he said, Go again, seven times.
et il dit à son serviteur: « Monte, regarde du côté de la mer. » Le serviteur monta et, ayant regardé, il dit: « Il n’y a rien. » Et Élie dit: « Retourne sept fois. »
44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there is a little cloud like a man's hand arising out of the sea. And he said, Go up, say unto Achab, Harness up [thy chariot], and come down, that the rain may not detain thee.
À la septième fois, il dit: « Voici un petit nuage, comme la paume de la main d’un homme, qui s’élève de la mer. » Et Élie dit: « Va dire à Achab: Attelle et descends, afin que la pluie ne te surprenne pas. »
45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heavens were blackened with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Achab rode, and went to Yizre'el.
En peu de temps, le ciel fut assombri par les nuages et le vent, et il tomba une forte pluie; et Achab, monté sur son char, s’en retourna à Jezrahel.
46 And the inspiration of the Lord came over Elijah, and he girded up his loins; and he ran before Achab up to the entrance of Yizre'el.
Et la main de Yahweh fut sur Élie; il se ceignit les reins et courut devant Achab, jusqu’à l’entrée de Jezrahel.
