1 Kings 17
1 Then said Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gil'ad, unto Achab, As the Lord the God of Israel liveth, before whom I have stood, there shall not be in these years dew or rain, except according to my word.
Et Elie, le Thesbite, un des habitants de Galaad, dit à Achab: Il vit, le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, en la présence duquel je suis! il n’y aura pendant ces années-ci ni rosée ni pluie que selon les paroles de ma bouche.
2 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,
Et la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Elie, disant:
3 Go away from here, and turn thyself eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Kerith, which is to the east of the Jordan.
Retire-toi d’ici; va contre l’orient, et cache-toi près du torrent de Carith, qui est contre le Jourdain;
4 And it shall be, that out of the brook shalt thou drink; and the ravens have I ordained to sustain thee there.
Et là tu boiras au torrent; et j’ai ordonné aux corbeaux qu’ils te nourrissent là.
5 And he went and did according to the word of the Lord; and he went and remained by the brook Kerith, that is to the east of the Jordan.
Elie s’en alla donc, et fit selon la parole du Seigneur, et lorsqu’il s’en fut allé, il s’assit près du torrent de Carith, qui est contre le Jourdain.
6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening: and out of the brook he used to drink.
Et les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la chair le matin, également du pain et de la chair le soir, et il buvait au torrent.
7 And it came to pass after a while that the brook dried up; because there had been no rain in the land.
Mais après quelques jours le torrent se sécha; car il n’avait pas plu sur la terre.
8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,
La parole du Seigneur lui fut donc adressée, disant:
9 Arise, go unto Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and remain there: behold, I have ordained there a widow-woman to sustain thee.
Lève-toi, et va à Sarephta, ville des Sidoniens, et tu demeureras là; car j’ai ordonné là à une femme veuve qu’elle te nourrisse.
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, there was there a widow-woman gathering sticks of wood: and he called her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
Il se leva et s’en alla à Sarephta. Et lorsqu’il fut venu à la porte de la ville, il aperçut une femme veuve qui ramassait du bois; et il l’appela, et lui dit: Donne-moi un peu d’eau dans le vase, afin que je boive.
11 And as she went to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.
Et lorsque celle-ci allait pour en apporter, il cria derrière elle, disant: Apporte-moi aussi, je te prie, un peu de pain en ta main.
12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have nothing baked, but a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a cruise: and, behold, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for me and my son; and when we have eaten it, we shall have to die.
Elle lui répondit: Le Seigneur ton Dieu vit! je n’ai point de pain, mais seulement dans la cruche autant de farine qu’une main peut en contenir, et un peu d’huile dans le flacon. Voilà que je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, pour que j’entre et que je fasse du pain pour moi et pour mon fils, afin que nous mangions, et que nous mourions.
13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake at first, and bring it out unto me, and for thee and for thy son shalt thou prepare [something] afterward.
Élie lui dit: Ne crains point; mais va, et fais comme tu as dit; cependant fais pour moi auparavant, avec ce peu de farine même, un petit pain cuit sous la cendre, et apporte-le-moi; mais pour toi et pour ton fils, tu en feras ensuite.
14 For thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not fail, neither shall the cruise of oil diminish, until the day that the Lord giveth rain upon the face of the earth.
Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: La cruche de la farine ne manquera point, et le flacon de l’huile ne diminuera point, jusqu’au jour où le Seigneur doit donner de la pluie sur la face de la terre.
15 And she went and did according to the word of Elijah: and she, and he, and her household, did eat [many] days.
Cette femme s’en alla donc, et fit selon la parole d’Elie; et il mangea lui-même, et elle et sa maison; et depuis ce jour-là
16 The jar of meal failed not, nor did the cruise of oil diminish, according to the word of the Lord, which he had spoken through means of Elijah.
La cruche de farine ne manqua point, et l’huile du flacon ne diminua point, selon la parole que le Seigneur avait dite par l’entremise d’Elie.
17 And it came to pass after these events, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness became very severe, until that at length there was no breath left in him.
Or il arriva ensuite que le fils de cette femme, mère de famille, fut malade; et sa maladie fut très violente, en sorte qu’il ne restait pas en lui un souffle.
18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O man of God? thou art come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son!
Cette femme dit donc à Elie: Qu’importe à moi et à toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu entré chez moi pour renouveler la mémoire de mes péchés et pour faire mourir mon fils?
19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the upper chamber, in which he abode, and he laid him upon his own bed.
Et Elie lui répondit: Donne-moi ton fils. Et il le prit de dessus son sein, le porta dans la chambre où lui-même demeurait, et il le mit sur son lit.
20 And he called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?
Puis il cria au Seigneur et dit: Seigneur mon Dieu, même la veuve chez laquelle moi-même en tout cas je suis nourri, vous l’avez affligée au point de faire mourir son fils?
21 And he stretched himself out over the child three times, and called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, let, I pray thee, the soul of this child return again within him.
Et il s’étendit et se rapetissa sur l’enfant jusqu’à sa mesure, par trois fois, puis il cria au Seigneur et dit: Seigneur mon Dieu, je vous conjure, que l’âme de cet enfant retourne en son corps.
22 And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah: and the soul of the child returned into him, and he revived.
Et le Seigneur exauça la voix d’Elie, et l’âme de l’enfant retourna en lui, et il revécut.
23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the upper chamber into the house, and gave him unto his mother; and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Alors Elie prit l’enfant, le mena de sa chambre au bas de la maison, le remit à sa mère, et lui dit: Vois, ton fils vit.
24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this do I know, that thou art a man of God, and the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.
Et la femme répondit à Elie: Maintenant je reconnais en cela que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole du Seigneur en ta bouche est véritable.
