1 Adam, Sheth, Enosh,
[The first person God created was Adam]. Adam’s [son was] Seth. [Seth’s son was] Enosh. [Enosh’s son was] Kenan.
2 Kenan, Mehalalel, Jered,
[Kenan’s son was] Mahalalel. [Mahalalel’s son was] Jared. [Jared’s son was] Enoch.
3 Enoch, Methushelah, Lemech,
[Enoch’s son was] Methuselah. [Methusalah’s son was] Lamech. [Lamech’s son was] Noah.
4 Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
[Noah’s sons were] Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
5 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Thubal, and Meshech, and Thirass.
The sons (OR, descendants) of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
6 And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenas, and Diphath, and Thogarmah.
The sons (OR, descendants) of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
7 And the sons of Javan: Elishah, and Tharshishah, Kittim, and Rodanim.
The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim.
8 The sons of Ham: Cush, and Misrayim, Put, and Canaan.
The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim (OR, Egypt), Put, and Canaan.
9 And the sons of Cush: Seba, and Chavilah, and Sabta, and Ra'mah, and Sabtecha. And the sons of Ra'mah: Sheba, and Dedan.
The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons (OR, descendants) of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
10 And Cush begat Nimrod: this one began to be a mighty man upon the earth.
Another descendant of Cush was Nimrod. When he grew up, he became a mighty warrior on the earth.
11 And Mizrayim begat the Ludim, and there the 'Anamim, and the Lehabim, and the Naphtuchim,
Mizraim (OR, Egypt) was the ancestor of the Lud people-group, the Anam people-group, the Lehab people-group, the Naphtuh people-group,
12 And the Pathrussim, and the Cassluchim, of whom came the Philistines, and the Caphthorim.
the Pathrus people-group, the Casluh people-group, and the Caphtor people-group. The people of [the] Philistia [region] were descended from the Casluh people-group.
13 And Canaan begat Zidon, his first-born, and Heth.
Canaan’s first son was Sidon. He was also the ancestor of the Heth people-group,
14 And the Jebusite, and the Emorite, and the Girgashite,
the Jebus people-group, the Amor people-group, the Girgash people-group,
15 And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,
the Hiv people-group, the Ark people-group, the Sin people-group,
16 And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Chamathite.
the Arvad people-group, the Zemar people-group, and the Hamath people-group.
17 The sons of Shem: 'Elam, and Asshur, and Arpachshad, and Lud, and Aram, and 'Uz, and Chul, and Gether, and Meshech.
The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. Aram’s sons were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.
18 And Arpachshad begat Shelach, and Shelach begat 'Eber.
Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, who was the father of Eber.
19 And unto 'Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.
Eber had two sons. One was named Peleg [which sounds like the word that means ‘divided’] because during the time that he lived, [the people on] the earth were divided [into various language groups]. Peleg’s [younger] brother was Joktan.
20 And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Chazarmaveth, and Jerach,
Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
21 And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,
Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
22 And 'Ebal and Abimael, and Sheba,
Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
23 And Ophir, and Chavilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.
Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab.
24 Shem, Arpachshad, Shelach,
The descendants of Shem, [in order from him to Abraham], were Arphaxad, Shelah,
25 'Eber, Peleg, Re'u,
Eber, Peleg, Reu,
26 Serug, Nachor, Terach,
Serug, Nahor, Terah,
27 Abram, the same is Abraham.
and Abram, whose [name was later changed to] Abraham.
28 The sons of Abraham: Isaac, and Ishma'el.
Abraham’s sons were Isaac and Ishmael.
29 These are their generations: The first-born of Ishma'el, Nebayoth, then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,
[The son of Abraham’s slave wife Hagar was Ishmael.] Ishmael’s [twelve] sons were Nebaioth, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
30 Mishma', and Dumah, Massa, Chadad, and Thema,
Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema,
31 Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishma'el.
Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
32 And the sons of Keturah, the concubine of Abraham: she bore Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Yishbak, and Shuach. And the sons Jokshan: Sheba, and Dedan.
[After]’s [wife Sarah died, he took another wife named] Keturah. The sons of Abraham and Keturah were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan’s sons were Sheba and Dedan.
33 And the sons of Midian: 'Ephah, and 'Epher, and Chanoch, and Abida', and Elda'ah. All these are the sons of Keturah.
Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah.
34 And Abraham begat Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.
The son of Abraham [and his wife Sarah] was Isaac, and Isaac’s sons were Esau and [Jacob, whose name was later changed to] Israel.
35 The sons of Esau: Eliphaz, Re'uel, and Ye'ush, and Ya'lam, and Korach.
The sons of Esau were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
36 The sons of Eliphaz: Theman, and Omar, Zephi, and Ga'tam, Kenas, and Thimna', and 'Amalek.
The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho (OR, Zephi), Gatam, Kenaz, Timna, and Amalek.
37 The sons of Re'uel: Nachath, Zerach, Shammah, and Mizzah.
Reuel’s sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.
38 And the sons of Se'ir: Lotan, and Shobal, and Zib'on, and 'Anah, and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan.
[Another descendant of Esau was Seir. His descendants lived in the Edom region]. Seir’s sons were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan.
39 And the sons of Lotan: Chori, and Homam: and the sister of Lotan: Thimna'.
Lotan’s sons were Hori and Homam, and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
40 The sons of Shobal: 'Alyan, and Manachath, and 'Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. And the sons of Zib'on: 'Ayah, and 'Anah.
Shobal’s sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. Zibeon’s sons were Aiah and Anah.
41 The sons of 'Anah: Dishon. And the sons of Dishon: Chamran, and Eshban, and Yithran, and Cheran.
Anah’s son was Dishon. 1 Dishon’s sons were Hemdan (OR, Hamran), Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.
42 The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, and Za'avan, and Ja'akan. The sons of Dishan: 'Uz, and Aran.
Ezer’s sons were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan (OR, Jaakan). Dishan’s sons were Uz and Aran.
43 And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before there reigned any king over the children of Israel: Bela' the son of Be'or; and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
[These are the names of] the kings that ruled [the] Edom [region] before any kings ruled over Israel: Bela, the son of Beor, was king in Edom, and the name of the city [in which he lived] was Dinhabah.
44 And Bela' died, and there reigned in his stead Jobab the son of Zerach of Bozrah.
When Bela died, Jobab, the son of Zerah from Bozrah [city], became the king.
45 And Jobab died, and there reigned in his stead Chusham of the land of Theman.
When Jobab died, Husham became the king. He was from the region where the Teman people-group lived.
46 And Chusham died and there reigned in his stead Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab; and the name of his city was 'Avith.
When Husham died, Hadad, the son of Bedad, became the king. He [ruled in] Avith city. Hadad’s [army] defeated [the army of the] Midian [people-group] in [the] Moab [region].
47 And Hadad died, and there reigned in his stead Samlah of Massrekah.
When Hadad died, Samlah became the king. He was from Masrekah [town].
48 And Samlah died, and there reigned in his stead Saul of Rechoboth by the river.
When Samlah died, Shaul became the king. He was from Rehoboth [city] along the [Euphrates] river.
49 And Saul died, and there reigned in his stead Ba'al-chanan the son of 'Achbor.
When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan, the son of Achbor, became the king.
50 And Ba'al-chanan died, and there reigned in his stead Hadad; and the name of his city was Pa'i; and the name of his wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab.
When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad became the king. He was from Pau city. His wife’s name was Mehetabel; she was the daughter of Matred and the granddaughter of Me-Zahab.
51 Hadad died also. And the dukes of Edom were: Thimna', duke 'Alvah, duke Jetheth,
Then Hadad died. The leaders of the clans of the Edom people-group were Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,
52 Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,
Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,
53 Duke Kenas, duke Theman, duke Mibzar,
Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,
54 Duke Magdiel, duke 'Iram. These are the dukes of Edom.
Magdiel, and Iram.
